I definitely should be drawing, but I have a birthday card to design for a friend.Well, that involves drawing, doesn't it? Or at least, drawing-related skills.

Speaking of such weighty matters, traffic on the NEB must be way up lately. I'm getting like a hundred views a day on my art thread.

Well, I learned the hard way, almost ruined a great drawing. When doing photorealistic(commissioned) type portraits all fucked up, the next day I had to go back, and spent more time erasing and fixing what I drew while fucked up. So I don't do that anymore.

But I LOVE painting while altered. It can get messy though.

It still doesn't say anything good about him, which was my point.

It says he likes making incredibly "B" movies for his fans, because let's face it, who in their right mind would make that movie expecting critical acclaim and loads of cash? And I can get behind that. I'd rather enjoy an actor who does movies he personally has fun with than an actor who's only interested in award-winners and money.

I watched Casino Royale last night. I can't remember the last time a Bon movie, or any other movie, for that matter, had this much suspense. I thought Craig was going to drop the ball on this one, but aside from a little mistakes in his accent, he was pretty damn good.

Highly recommended.

Good, I plan on seeing it this Friday. I didn't like Pierce as Bond, but admittedly, it wasn't all him- the past four movies just plain sucked. A new Bond, a new director. I hope I enjoy it.

Totally, if it wasn't a commissioned sketch for someone else of their kids, I wouldn't have erased anything, actually. I thought it looked pretty badass personally. But it was just way to sketchy/lively and I know that's not what my client wants unfortunately.

But especially in painting, there are no mistakes, usually the messier and more controlled chaos, the better.

I need to do way more watercolor, too.

And this is all on a TV show I'm watching.

Your move.

I haven't had a dream (or, at least, a dream I can even vaguely remember after waking up) in over eight years, but the last one I can remember involved a murder mystery in Bedrock where the Rubbles and the Flintstones were slowly being killed off by one of the aliens from an Eighties cartoon show I can't remember the name of that was about riding dinosaurs fitted with lasers and missle launchers and shit.

I have insane dreams, all the time. I love it. I blame comics.

I was talking to a psych friend about flying dreams, and how he thought they were related to a person not being where they wanted be to in life. I told him I though the dreams were more related to me reading a Superman comic books before I went to bed.

It's usually a story element rather than a whole genre, but sometimes, it can get overpowering... or it features in a really crappy film that has nothing else going for it.

It's usually a story element rather than a whole genre, but sometimes, it can get overpowering... or it features in a really crappy film that has nothing else going for it.
I mean, I'd call something like The Killer or Hard Boiled 'Crime Drama' and I'd call something like Equilibrium 'Science Fiction/Action'.

Examples?

Ok, after two episodes I think Deadwood rings truer for me than Rome does. The British accents bother me a bit. I don't believe in the character - what's-his-name Titus Pullo or something - the guy who had the brain surgery - that guy is not believable, he's like some modern thug. TOTALLY saw that baby thing coming. Nice budget though - wooh. Nobody's half as menacing as Al Swerengen and they have waay more reason to be. Not totally off-put but I have my reservations

howy both are nice, the car one is very strong and confident - the plane one - I agree that it could use a bit more contrast. I would consider - if it's not too late - pushing the details in their boxes a bit. I love the white outline boxes but I think an inset detail should be more - well , detailed. What if you took that great steel blue that kinda outlines that amorphous shape between the first and second boxes and use that for the line colour instead of the more harmonious but visually weaker vio;et you used. As it is now the strongest contrast in the piece is in the background.

Dreams are hard to interpret, because sometimes they mean something, but most of the time it's just your mind "taking out the garbage".

Dream content is lots of stuff. A good chunk of it is indeed just residual stuff from whatever you've been up to or thinking about during the day. Things you are thinking about at bedtime are particularly likely to show up in dreams - indeed, one way of reducing nightmares/flashbacks is to spend a half-hour or so reading/thinking about calming ideas and images before bedtime. If you practice this, you can get good at choosing what you're gonna dream about, which can be useful for processing stuff and for creative purposes.

Some dream material does reflect unconscious processing of stuff we have been mulling over - that's probably the most useful stuff, overall. I've sometimes had dreams that gave me good solutions to problems that I'd been perplexed by during the day. These usually are pretty obvious and direct, though - no need to get into the symbolic stuff. And again, you can combine this with the "what's on your mind at bedtime" stuff, above, to increase the chance of doing some useful processing in your sleep. How useful depends partly on how well/often you remember your dreams, of course.

Then there are the symbolic or thematic dreams. They exist, but they are a minimal part of what we dream. The problem with analyzing them is that a) standard dream analysis is shit, because symbols tend to be a lot more personalized in meaning than the Freudian and Jungian guys suggest - one person's dream of a snake may mean entirely different things than another's snake dream, depending largely on whether or not the person in question likes snake; b) given the highly personal nature of symbols, for an "expert" to analyze the dreams, said expert would probably have to know the other person well enough to be able to understand that person's symbols, which is rarely the case, and when it *is* the case, you probably know more about what's on the person's mind than dreams will tell you anyhow, and c) even within symbolic dreams, a lot of the content is random nonsense. Neural imagery studies of dreams show that a lot of mental activity during dreams is completely random firing of neurons. Thus, if you dream about your third grade math teacher, it more likely than not means nothing except that a random memory neuron fired.

I don't do much dream work at all with clients, I find it mostly a waste of time. 95% of the time, if someone says "I dreamed about blah blah blah, what do you think that means?", the old stereotypical "What do you think it means?" demonstrates that the person already has it figured out just fine - which makes sense since, again, it's their symbols and themes anyhow.

The other 5% of folk are mostly just daft or completely lacking in introspective capacity, and usually have dreams so obvious that analysis is hardly the right word to use.

Ooo, step back! You rebel you, switching fowl on them! :p

A dozen...how the frick many people are you having over???

"A dozen" was an exaggeration meant to imply "a lot". It's more like four. And some sort of sweet and spicy rice pudding thing.

We have ten guests, making for twelve of us, but two of those are teenage boys, so they count for three people each in terms of food consumption.

Heading off to the in-laws for Thanksgiving in just a bit. Soon as Ian gets done in the bathroom. Which means probably another hour or so.

Do all gay males spend more time in the bathroom in the morning, on average, than women? Or is this just a gay + teen thing?

I had flying dreams very frequently as a kid. Probably closely related to frequenly reading Legion and Superman books. The "flying" was always the same. Instead of comic book type flying, I'd jump in the air, and by concentrating really hard, I could stop myself from going all the way back to the ground, hovering an inch or two off the ground and then sort of scooting around at that height.

Paradox
11-23-2006, 06:46 AM
Wow, Gilda, that's very similar to my recurring dream as an adult on that subject. Instead of flying (I have those, too) I find myself on things like a piece of cardboard, that when I concentrate and lift the front a little, scoots along at speeds comparable to city traffic (like about 30 mph). Always thought that was a strange thing to dream when the possibilities were limitless.

It's not quite Master Killer, but it is quite the movie.

"Crippled Masters" is where it's at. Ever seen a paraplegic breakdance/kung-fu fight? You're missin' out! Wu-Tang Clan movies pale in comparison to the novelty that is an armless man carring a legless man on his back and going buck nuckin' futty on someone.

Howdy, I am dressed and somehwat ready to go to my dad's girlfriend's place. I have to wait for her daughter to come pick me up, and I am really dreading today. Dad will get drunk as usual, his girlfriend is one of those way overly nice people, but completly uninteresting by herself, her daughter is 26 looks just like mommy and isn't all that fun, and then the grandmother who is a holocaust survivor who only decided it was ok to eat a few years ago and the grandmother's boring boyfriend. Fortunately Dad brought over about 5 bottles of the Beujolais Nouveau, which I can easily polish off a bottle and a half, while watching football.

The other part that sucks is that she lives in the burbs so I am basically trapped until the daughter is ready to go home.

Oh yeah and dad is barbecuing the turkey and I am a freakin traditionalist, I want it in the oven with the juices and the stuffing inside.

We aren't doing a turkey either. My little revolt against the "turkey day" conception of Thanksgiving. A goose, a ham, and a couple of roast chickens along with lots of rice, fresh vegetables, and about a dozen pies that my MIL has made since arriving yesterday. Anyone want to chat with moi for a bit? Kind of a boring day today. Off from work and just sitting at my 'puter. We can talk about anything you like. Anything at all. I could even open my Yahoo Messneger or MSN Messenger, if you'd like and chat there. Just bored out of my skull today. I have a hard time "relaxing" because I tend to be workaholic. I start to "fidget" when I have too much free time on my hands and don't know what to do with myself.

Other than a few awkward moments that are inevitable when you get this many people together, mostly regarding whose household rules we're using, it's been ok. Nobody's drunk and yelling at anybody else. That by itself is an improvement over any Thanksgiving with my parents.

Are we the only country that does that? Without loss of generality, I assume people dress like us, speak english, celebrate our holidays and watch our movies and television.

Are other countries less ethnocentric?

Your first name isn't coke?

This reminds me of a funny story. I will tell it.

I drink a lot of Coke and in college was called "Coke" or "Chris Coke". My department mailbox was even labelled Chris Coke for most of my stay there. This confused one of my students. More than a year after she'd been in my lab, she saw me drinking Coke and wearing a Coca-Cola t-shirt and said "Wow, you really get into it; just because of your last name?"

I did not clarify things for her. She likely still assumes my last name is Coke.

A woman I used to work with was an incredibly dedicated history teacher. She'd never take holidays, usually working straight through them, except the big end of year one. Every year, because she'd not taken holidays or spent up, she'd take off overseas, usually taking the opportunity to visit places she'd been teaching about.
However, she had a nasty habit of getting into trouble every single time thorugh no fault of her own. She wandered into a restricted (read: war) zone due to missing signs while in Eastern Europe, for instance.

She visited the Atlanta and while she was there, bought a whole carton of the old fashioned bottled Coke that we can't get in Australia. So far, nothing's gone wrong, and she's on her way back.
Before she gets back, there's a stop off in Bangkok and they ask, "Have you got anything to declare."
She says, "Just a carton of Coke."
As soon as she said it, she thought. "Crap, now I know what I'm doing until my connecting flight gets here."
