Never thought of it like that. Most of the coffee we have here comes from Columbia so I thought the whole thing was Spanish culture, not Italian.
Well Juan Valdez made it a business but it all started with the Italians.

What's so cool about Scrooge McDuck? I mean I read his stories as a kid, but I never knew people still liked him this much.
Essentially, the fact that the stories are just extremely well-written and illustrated adventure stories, with some great characterization.
For me (and this may seem blasphemous to some) the allure isn't in the fact that the stories are about Scrooge McDuck, but that they are extremely good.

This reminds me of that mis-en-scenes from season one of the Sopranos. Tony has sent two of his henchmen to find a guy who stole one of his kids teacher's car and they're in a Starbucks and one of them laments the destruction of the Italian culture.
There's also a scene where an obvious Starbucks spoof opens a shop in the neighborhood and two of Tony's boys talk to the manage about "security" and he dances around their threats by saying "every penny that goes through this store is tracked by corporate." Fuckin' hilarious. Starbucks told the Mafia to shove it. Pussies.

The Simpsons had 10 great years, followed by 7 mediocre ones which are still enjoyable and better than most television. I would put the best 100 Simpsons episodes up against anything.

"The Simpsons" at its best, namely seasons three through eight, were and still are untouchable, but the current fair of "Simpsons" episodes are worse than... well, they're bad. I don't even know if I'd say it's the best thing ever (blasphemy), but it's damn good, and certainly deserved way more of a chance than it was given byt stupid f'ing networks. Its unfair treatment, combined with its obvious quality, adds to its legend.

Y'know, I've been trying to keep up with these threads for the past couple, but I don't think I contribute very much in the way of discussion. So here's a story.
The other night, I was going to a friend's house for her kid's fifth birthday party, but I wound up working later than I had to so I lost two hours of my day and had to shop for him really quick right after work. That pretty much ruled out any place like KB Toys, Toys R Us, or even K Mart, so I swung by the Walgreen's on the way to their house hoping the had some dinosaur shit, 'cause the kid's nuts for dinosaurs and Spider-Man. Anyway, I hit the little toy aisle and they've got a small selection of action figures and toys and coloring books and games and shit, and when I reach down for some dinosaur toys, I see something downright hilarious in the games shelf.
The "Desperate Housewives" Trivia Game, ages thirteen and up! Right next to Chutes and Ladders and right about Candy Land. How fucking awesome is that? I look around a little more and it seems the higher up the shelves go, the more adult the games get. The next shelf up had a "Sopranos" trivia game, and above that, "Sex and the City," which were both, thankfully, eighteen and up, yet still frighteningly close to the Kids Monopoly and Twister boards.

First the marketing people get together to decide if sucking dick is profitable. They have no independent thoughts except to see what the other networks have been up to. Noticing other networks that suck dick and are making money, they follow suit.
They cancel gold, put out derivative crap that's clearly a pale photocopy of things that sucked to begin with, and make a lot of money, because we need more rip-offs of Trading Spaces, and less Carnivale.

Well, that sucks. I just finished Season 1. Haven't started 2 yet. I will retain high hopes. This show has me intrigued and that season finale was quite intense. Maybe know that Knauf (sp?) is writing comics, he'll finish off the story here; I remember hearing he had 6 seasons all planned out
Oh, don't get me wrong, there were plenty of great moments in Carnivale. It just wasn't as good as Season 1, in my opinion. Some folks might beg to differ though. I'd be curious to know what you think of it. Before the board crashed a few years ago, there was a massive Carnivale thread in the TV/Film Forum.
RIP Carnivale Thread.

When Starbucks was new to Vancouver I went into one with a friend who ordered a medium coffee. The conversation went like this.
Friend: One medium coffee.
Cashier (pointing to cups): Do you mean a "tall"?
Friend: One medium coffee.
Cashier: So, a tall coffee this morning?
Friend: I'm not gonna use your stupid fucking terminology. One medium coffee.
You got a robot, my friend. That majority of baristas I know are so jaded with the company, it would've gone:
Friend: One medium coffee.
Cashier: Dark or light.
Friend: I'unno. Dark sounds good.
Cashier: One medium dark roast. (at which point your friend coughs up one seventy-five for some burnt Indonesian coffee)

Bruce Campbell.
The series is very good for him, because it lets him play it as a straight adventure guy, rather than his usual physical comedy-infused stuff. And he has a great supporting cast. I really need to find out what else Julius Carry's done.
He's great.
That's Michigan's Own Bruce Campbell.
Music, Print, film, Puroresu...we do it all.

I've just been watching Freak and Geeks; that's awesome; as is Carnivale. We've mentioned Sports Night. I hear Blade isn't being renewed and I thought that show was surprisingly well done (largely because they were smart enough to not make Blade the main character)
I think a good measure of quality is how quickly a stupid network cancels you. (But scifi is NOT stupid; may BSG live forever)
Carnivale season 1 was great. Season 2 was terrible.

Except they still start at "medium" instead of small, and use "Biggie" instead of "large."The Wendy's I was at didn't have "Biggie" written anywhere on the menu. Let alone "Great Biggie".

Bruce Campbell. Awesome in "Evil Dead," hilarious in " Bubba Hotep." He's what all geeks should strive to be, and if there were ever a situation where some alien race or supreme deity needed Earth to offer up an example of what the perfect man is, it should be him.Obviously you've never seen that piece of shit, The Man with the Screaming Brain.

Yeah, that movie was pretty bad, but I love shitty movies. And when you compare "The Man with the Screaming Brain" to the slew of other Sci-Fi originals, it's like the "Citizen Kane" of the Sci-Fi Channel.

The funniest part about that movie are the stories Campbell tells about it when he's at cons. I think he sometimes does movies just so he can have anecdotes to tell. A friend of mine is going to try to get Campbell to star in a movie he's written with someone else. Because Campbell basically does any movie he's paid well enough to do, it's a distinct possibly it could happen. Doesn't hurt that it's a good script too.

I saw Casino Royale last, damn that movie was awesome. There was the danger of moving into Anakin/Amidala romantic nonsense but it was quickly quelled. And I still stand that the first chase scene was better than anything Jackie Chan has ever done.
As far as cancelled TV shows, I am still pissed about the cancellation of Millennium. Once he had to make the choice between saving his daughter or saving his wife the show went straight to dark and became some of the best television I have ever seen. And I will hold Lance Henriksen up against any of your Bruce Campbell love.

Frequently, the mothers don't. They smuggle alternate clothes out either in their backpacks or under a respectable baggy sweater. The make-up gets applied in the school bathroom.

I loved Seasons 1 and 2 of MILLENNIUM. Personally, I consider MILLENNIUM, Season 2, to be some of the very best, most challenging television of all time. Absolutely incredible season finale. Unfortunately, season 3 was all downhill. With the departure of Morgan and Wong, the show changed direction and lost focus, and deteriorated into a tired conspiracy thriller -an even-more-bad version of late-seasons X-FILES, but without aliens.

See I always loved the show but thought it was better than ever once his wife died. The show got really dark, and I thought was more cohesive during this time. By the end of Season II, the show had evolved from being a serial-murder-of-the-week show to being a supernatural thriller about the build-up to the apocalypse and the nature of evil. All that went to the wayside in season 3. Also, the show was already dark. The problem in season 3 was that it moved from darkness to pessimism and paranoia.

Hey, Homerjay (or anyone else who digs Sinatra):
The wife and I were shopping in the mall the other day, and we swung through FYE. She was off looking at whatever it is she listens to, so I hit the jazz and easy listening section, and found this: a ten-cd set of early Sinatra recordings for $20 (http://shop.fye.com/product.aspx?sku=202713165&loc=50244). The packaging is shitty--it's a small box, and each CD is in a cardboard sleeve, but it's a bunch of his swing era stuff at a great price.
