Better than Hydrox. ;)
Nothing is better than Hydrox. Hydrox were like 1000 times better than Oreos! If only they had named them something that didn't sound like a chemical additive.

I must be an even worse nerdette. I've never seen an episode of Smallville. It was one of those shows that never appealed to me as a concept.
Besides not being female, I would be a bad nerdette, too, as I also haven't seen an episode of Smallville.
And as a male, I will admit to being intrigued, though, when someone posted in Rita's pictures from that episode Lois went undercover as a stripper.
Lordy, was that stretching the boundaries of what is allowed on TV.

Oh, that doesn't make you a nerdette. It's an awful, AWFUL show. And I use to classify it as a guilty pleasure, but there's not much pleasure to be had, so I guess I just like inflicting self-torture. That, and I enjoy reading these (http://www.televisionwithoutpity.com/articles/category_1202.html) snarkariffic recaps.

The Bridge on the River Kwai is 2:40 and holds me every minute beginning to end every time.
Seven Samurai at three and a half hours likewise doesn't have a wasted minute.
The director's cut of Amadeus is in nearly every way better than the much shorter theatrical version.
I can't say that I've ever seen a good movie that I'd give a bad rating to because of the length. I thought the third Lord of the Rings movie needed a good half hour trim to tighten it up, but it wasn't a bad move by any stretch of the imagination.

Irish Heartbeat, by Van Morrison and the Chieftans, is freakin' awesome!!
I had not listened to it in, like, a year (the CD fell somewhere and I just found it the other day), and it is sooo fun!

There was an in-depth study done a few years back.
The C2C ratio for Hydrox was 1.233893:2 while Oreos was a paltry 1.129448:2.

You really ought to.
Doctor Zhivago is a tougher one, as I can see some folks being put off by the length - but man, the romance in that film (and the book, itself) is so badass.
It is sorta like Wuthering Heights, only the characters are less whiny and lame.
And Omar Shariff is awesome-sational.

Another sign of a very good movie: When this movie runs on commercial TV, you still watch it and enjoy it as much as before, even though it may have been censored to make it appropriate. Plus you don't mind the commercials as much. The quality of the flick carries you through them.

I've only been persuaded to karaoke twice and once was Battle of New Orleans.
Dr. Zhivago didn't do it for me. And Sharif was so much less dreamy than in Laurence of Arabia.
Bridge on the River Kwai is fantastic, however. William Holden is criminally underrated. And he did so many great films! Work your way through that first AFI list (http://www.afi.com/tvevents/100years/movies.aspx) and he pops up everywhere.

I looked out this morning and the sun was gone
Turned on some music to start my day
I lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes and I slipped away
It's more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
'till I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away
So many people have come and gone
Their faces fade as the years go by
Yet I still recall as I wander on
as clear as the sun in the summer sky
It's more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
'till I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away
When I'm tired and thinking cold
I hide in my music, forget the day
and dream of a girl I used to know
I closed my eyes and she slipped away
She slipped away. She slipped away.
It's more than a feeling, when I hear that old song they used to play (more than a feeling)
I begin dreaming (more than a feeling)
'till I see Marianne walk away

Essentially it's the right for any person not to be tried for the same crime twice. And we do still have it in the U.S.
It's why O.J. was tried, acquited and then charged with violating Ron Goldman and Nicole's civil rights.
And found guilty.
If anyone doesn't believe that O.J.'s acquittal wasn't at least in part caused by the riots in 1992 then they are foolish.
The racist rants of the Bookworm Fuhrman and the incomptence of the D.A. didn't help.
Dropping blood spots that had anti-coagulant in them at the crime scene was pretty freaking stupid.

An attorney could do a lot better job of explaining this, but I'll give it a try.
Essentially, double jeopardy refers to trying a person twice for the same offense(s). This is forbidden by the 5th Amendment of the US Constitution. So, let's say someone is accused of robbing a bank. If the trial goes to completion and the person is found not guilty, they can't just retry the case in attempt to get a guilty verdict.
There are some double jeopardy-like things that can occur. A person can sometimes be tried in civil court for something related to something that was tried in criminal court. Technically, though, the person is not being tried for the same thing. Consider OJ Simpson as an example. He was tried and found not guilty of murder, but was later tried by relatives of Ron Goldman in civil court and lost a wrongful death claim.
Also, double jeopardy only applies if a trial goes to completion. Mistrials can be retried, as can cases ordered for a new trial on appeal, on the basis of the first trial being done inappropriately (this is almost always in favor of the defendant).

The Wii gamepad (can it even be called that?) looks hella confusing, yo. I think I'll stick with PS3. I just wish they'd change the design of their damn gamepad. Three consoles and still the same design.
It takes just a few minutes to get used to the Wiimote (Goddamn, that name's hilarious!). I played ExciteTruck on the demo station at my local GameStop and it was easy to get used to. Not only that, it was fun. I usually hate racing games.
Oh, not to mention that it won't cost six hundred fucking dollars. And the games won't cost eighty bucks. I'm not buying a PS3 out of principle. Sony fucked up big on this one. High production costs for little payoff, short-sighted promotional campaigns that slowly alienated lots of fans, a ridiculously expensive console with ridiculously expensive games and considerably unimpressive launch titles. I don't know what they were expecting, especially with a holiday launch, but I can garuntee they're gonna' get a firm kick in the balls from reality when the Wii beats the fuck out of the PS3 this Christmas season.

I'm a bad nerdette. I just read TWoP's Smallville recaplet and the recaplet had to tell me that it was Martian Manhunter posing as the mysterious do-gooder. I saw the glowy red eyes, but evidently the dude was suppose to be green - I should check my tv. Also, is MM known in the comics for having a thing for Oreos?
Yes. Yes he does. And this all happened on an episode of "Smallville?" Man, why'd I stop watching that show? Sure, it was "Dawson's Creek" with super powers, but all of the cameos I keep hearing about give me nerd chubbies.
You know what impresses me?
When a film is really long, but still holds your interest.
Very few films can pull that off, I think.
Lawrence of Arabia is one, I would say.
Gone With the Wind is another one.
How about you folks? Any films that went on a long time that you can think of that never lulled for you?
Or any films that you basically liked, but were essentially ruined by going on too long?
-Brian
Where's "The Great Escape" on this list! I love that movie and at 172 minutes it counts as a long one. Or "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" or "The Great Race" of "Judgement at Nuremberg"?

If you have a little patience, you could always wait a few months until Sony gets their collective heads out of their ass and lowers the price by a fuckin' lot. Six hundred dollars? C'mon, that's ridiculous no matter what the machine does. For six hundred dollars, the PS3 better swallow.

Irish coffee (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_coffee) (coffee, sugar, Irish whiskey and cream) with just a touch of chocolate liqueur and whipped cream on top of the double cream.

2 parts vodka

Hypothetically, you could reserve and buy five of them on opening day and resell four of them for a little over double the price, resulting in a free one for yourself and a tidy profit of nearly two grand after all expenses.
Of course, you'd have to plan ahead for that to work. Hypothetically speaking, that is.

Was that the one with Kilmer or Clooney? They both sucked, but at least Clooney acted like a good Bruce Wayne. Beat the hell out of Michael Keaton, who made a good Batman, but a shitty Bruce Wayne, and Kilmer, who made a shitty both.
It was Clooney, who (to me) looked ridiculous in the Batsuit...but it's not entirely his fault since the suit had nipples on it for some weird reason.
Also, the batsuit at the end of the movie has a giant silver codpiece as well.

If it makes you feel better, Sony takes a loss of at least 250.00 per console, and that's just in hardware, so it's not accounting for R&D, manufacturing, marketing, or anything else.

Burton's Batman used to be the best ones until Nolan came around with his version. Batman Begins makes the Burton films look they were made by retarded monkeys on acid.
You can't have it both ways with Batman, which I think Batman and Robin(and Batman Forever) tried to do. It has to be Adam West cheese, or Nolan grim realism, you can't combine the two.
and I used to love the Burton movies...compared to the others which I don't acknowledge as having really happened.

Hardware is a loss leader. They're probably making little to nothing on the consoles. It's games and peripherals where the money is made.
But even assuming they did make a profit, I can't see myself getting worked up over it. Those consoles were going to be bought by someone anyway. No reason a middleman can't pick up a little extra as a result of some people's impatience.

That's one of the things I like about Burton actually. His movies have a certain look to them. There's something weird, and offputting about his style. You definitely know you're watching one of his films.

Nope, on the sliding scale, authentic Miller Batman wins. As does genuine O'Neill, etc.
On the other hand you have the last 1960 comic I read where (in 10 story pages):
Batman meets his archeologist friend in England because there are wall-paintings of him fighting monsters; he then fights both these monsters and wins. The science dude lends Batman his time machine so Batman can go back in time and investigate where these monsters come from. It turns out aliens invaded ancient Egypt and sent monsters into the future to test if earthlings could defend against them. Batman learns the aliens can't see the color red. So he bathes the Egyptian army in red dye and leads them against the aliens.
As an example.
Silly Batman loses.

The word "yet" covered it. Christian Bale rocks. The movie is slightly less perfect than I would like it to be, but it's pretty damn close (the first hour can't be beat; and the first time we see Batman at the docks: awesome)

We're talking about fictional entertainment though, I don't see where the real world comes into it.
I have no problem with Grim batman, I even like Morrison's anti-social Batman in JLA, but I don't see why that means BATMAN MUST BE GRIM. The idea that Batman HAD to be an unlikeable angsty asshole is what made the comics unreadable for years.

Well, "must" be grim is a bit much. I don't think his grimness is dependant on his asskickery. Batman knows his shit reguardless of whatever.
But to work in the real world...he has to be a dark and scary fella.

I've always been a big fan of 70's Batman, where he's the middle ground between the silliness of the 50's stuff and the 90s and '00s stuff that thinks it's Dashell Hammet but comes off more as R. L. Stine.

Being scary was always part of his character. "Criminals are a cowardly and superstitious lot". The '60s show and comics were a dramatic depature from his early issues. Adams and Aparo and Marshall Rogers returned the character to his status. It's not so much as being an asshole as belonging in the shadows. It is who he is. Some may prefer him riding around the Batmobile in the daytime reminding Robin to buckle up. But that's a different character with the same name....
Dammit. I swore if I started posting, I wouldn't become one of those stereotypical geeks who gets defensive of things and proclaims his nerdy beliefs loudly to the world...
*sigh* all the ideals I fail to live up to.

I never said Adam West's Batman would work in the real world. 90% of fiction doesn't work in the real world, and the stuff that does is usually boring. Take John le Carré for example and compare Tinker, Tailer, Soldier, Spy to The Looking Glass War.

Y'now? I didn't see Superman Returns. So I don't know.
I think the success of the Marvel X-Men and Spiderman movies made DC want to take a second look at how they're portraying the characters in the movies. I'm glad they did.

"Batman Begins," by far.
I was bored by the great majority of SR. Brandon Routhe played Superman as flat and uninteresting as he could, and managed the near-impossible feat of making Clark Kent the more compelling of the two. Spacey as Lex isn't even trying; the entire movie he's sour and somber and displays none of the self-satisfaction or ego a real Lex Luthor should have. His evil plan also makes even less sense than Ra's al Ghul's in BB did.
Damn, that movie disappointed the hell out of me. But I'm a Nolan whore, I can get into his style and mood even when as in "The Prestige" the pieces don't quite fit together, so I absolutely loved "Batman Begins."

There's this cute little old guy working the counter, and he's listening to an AM radio station that played popular standards from the '20s, '30s, and '40s.
