I haven't seen an episode of South Park in . . . well probably this century. I don't hate it, it just doesn't do anything for me.

On the other hand, I'd kill for Daria season sets, with the movies included at the appropriate spots.

Oh, and dogs don't purr. Advantage: Cats. Our old cat Sammy had a bit of a cleft palette. When he'd purr - which was all the time, when he wasn't outside kickin' asses and takin' names - it had a squeak to it.

(Not as bad as the dog in Snatch, though.)

So there used to be two stations in Philly that competed with each other to be the first to start playing Christmas music round the clock. Last year they ended up starting on Halloween. This year, there was some relief because one of the stations got bought out and changed format, so the Christmas craziness wasn't slated to begin until the day before Thanksgiving. But apparently some Delaware station started its Christmas music this morning, so the Philly station followed suit as soon as they found out. My wife thinks this is the most wonderful thing ever. Me, not so much.

Okay, after digging a bit it's aparently an urban legend, but according to this (http://www.guardian.co.uk/food/Story/0,,1759910,00.html)
Guardian article Burger King's milkshakes are (not surprisingly) sketchy. Here are the ingredients to the artificial strawberry flavor in their strawberry milkshake:

amyl acetate, amyl butyrate, amyl valerate, anethol, anisyl formate, benzyl acetate, benzyl isobutyrate, butyric acid, cinnamyl isobutyrate, cinnamyl valerate, cognac essential oil, diacetyl, dipropyl ketone, ethyl butyrate, ethyl cinnamate, ethyl heptanoate, ethyl heptylate, ethyl lactate, ethyl methylphenylglycidate, ethyl nitrate, ethyl propionate, ethyl valerate, heliotropin, hydroxyphrenyl- 2-butanone (10% solution in alcohol), ionone, isobutyl anthranilate, isobutyl butyrate, lemon essential oil, maltol, 4-methylacetophenone, methyl anthranilate, methyl benzoate, methyl cinnamate, methyl heptine carbonate, methyl naphthyl ketone, methyl salicylate, mint essential oil, neroli essential oil, nerolin, neryl isobutyrate, orris butter, phenethyl alcohol, rose, rum ether, undecalactone, vanillin and solvent.

Mmmm... YUM!

Oh well, I guess we'll have to stick to delicious aspartame for our formaldehyde fill.

Yeah, artificially flavoured anything is just.... scary. I think Jeffrey Steingarten did a piece on that once. Truffles (the fungus) were used as an example.

Yeah, artificially flavoured anything is just.... scary. I think Jeffrey Steingarten did a piece on that once. And the worst part is that they really can make those chemicals -- and nothing but chemicals -- taste better than the real thing. And indistinguishable even to experts. Truffles (the fungus) were used as an example.

That is scary. I'm trying to go completely organic, but it's definitely a difficult undertaking. You have to unlearn many eating habits, plus it's damn expensive.

I just figure that my great grandmother subsisted on an almost artificial-free diet for 104 years and it was a very healthy 104 years, so there must be something to it, right? This is where my inner hippy and hypochondriac meet.

That's another thing that's factoring into the decision. Nobody in my department knows how to leave their work in the studio. If I go, it'll be a Saturday night full of people biching and gossiping about how they don't think their professors like them. It gets kinda old after a while.

One thing I've realized is that you don't have to go all the way to organic, which is expensive and sometimes inconvenient. (Especially outside of major metro areas.) Just avoiding processed in general makes a huge difference. Cooking from scratch. Not microwaving. (Not to say the radiation is bad but the fact that microwave meals tend to have more chemicals.) And with all that, you save money in the long run. And planning ahead means you don't have much of an extra time commitment either. Make a big batch of something and eat it all week. Provided you can stand leftovers. Not everyone does.

Okay, after digging a bit it's aparently an urban legend, but according to this (http://www.guardian.co.uk/food/Story/0,,1759910,00.html)
Guardian article Burger King's milkshakes are (not surprisingly) sketchy. Here are the ingredients to the artificial strawberry flavor in their strawberry milkshake:

amyl acetate, amyl butyrate, amyl valerate, anethol, anisyl formate, benzyl acetate, benzyl isobutyrate, butyric acid, cinnamyl isobutyrate, cinnamyl valerate, cognac essential oil, diacetyl, dipropyl ketone, ethyl butyrate, ethyl cinnamate, ethyl heptanoate, ethyl heptylate, ethyl lactate, ethyl methylphenylglycidate, ethyl nitrate, ethyl propionate, ethyl valerate, heliotropin, hydroxyphrenyl- 2-butanone (10% solution in alcohol), ionone, isobutyl anthranilate, isobutyl butyrate, lemon essential oil, maltol, 4-methylacetophenone, methyl anthranilate, methyl benzoate, methyl cinnamate, methyl heptine carbonate, methyl naphthyl ketone, methyl salicylate, mint essential oil, neroli essential oil, nerolin, neryl isobutyrate, orris butter, phenethyl alcohol, rose, rum ether, undecalactone, vanillin and solvent.

Mmmm... YUM!

Eh. You gotta start somewhere. If the book started out with everything being a big lovefest between Sabra and Arabian Knight it might have felt forced (even moreso than how they're bein characterized now) and wouldn't have given the relationship between the two anywhere to go. They way they are now, it leaves open the door to show the two working through their differences to develop a mutual respect for each other, as well as presenting the possiblity for stories that if written carefully and not in a hamfisted manner, could serve as social commentary.

I'm going out at midnight to the store to see about the wii, out of curiosity if nothing else. One store here had more people in line than units at 2:00 this afternoon, the same franchise store 8 miles away had no one inline at 10:30. I am quite confused.

Good luck. All of the local GameStops were only getting about ten or so each and all of them were already pre-ordered, so I'm gonna' have to wait until after Thanksgiving to get one. At least I know they'll be getting more, though, unlike the woefully overpriced PS3, which I wouldn't plan seeing in a game store until mid-March. :p

My choices:
1) go to sleep? still a bit early at 7pm.
2)Watch televison? Hubby has the remote, I may get stuck with a show on the origins of the universe.
3) Read "The Sisters Grimm"?
4) Listen to "Thud!"?

man, my life is dull.

Even I have a more exciting life, and I'm certifiably fucking boring.

Nah, because Nintendo isn't fucking dense and knows how to launch a console. Sony and Microsoft need to take a page from them as I'm sure the Wii will be kicking the ever lovin' shit out of the PS3 and 360 this Christmas. Cheap, still considerably "next gen," strong launch titles, and plenty of stock.

Oh ho, SO...I went with the beer (I knew I would). I played FFX a bit, but got bored with it, so I turned it off. Now I'm back on the internet.

I will probably read some Lovecraft (wee!) and then draw some silly pictures and then maybe write some drunken ramblings, then maybe probably sleep. But for now, my swimming brain is floating through the internet.

You know what impresses me?

When a film is really long, but still holds your interest.

Very few films can pull that off, I think.

Lawrence of Arabia is one, I would say.

Gone With the Wind is another one.

I will go out on a limb and say The English Patient, even though I know that film has a lot of detractors (plus, it has Naveen Andrews in it!!) who specifically would argue it DID go on too long.

Some films that I think WERE hurt by length include:

A Bridge Too Far

The Longest Day

The Alamo (John Wayne version)

King Kong (Peter Jackson version)

How about you folks? Any films that went on a long time that you can think of that never lulled for you?

Or any films that you basically liked, but were essentially ruined by going on too long?

-Brian

Lord of the Rings hold me on every syllable after way too many viewings.

I still love Braveheart.

Titanic was over-long.

I actually have a low threshold. If a movie wants to pass 2 hours, it better earn it. Lots of movies that I just think are fine get a negative review from me for being longer than they're worth. Some movies are only worth 90 minutes and I appreciate when they accept this. It's too early for me to think of examples. I have many.

Gone with the Wind I actually could have taken a bit shorter (I'm sure that's blasphemous)
