After pulling my Gamecube out of the cupboard where it's been for the last six months or so and clocking up a few more hours of Smash Bros(pushing me into the two hundred hour area ) I started wondering.
Is there any one character that is actually superior to all the others or are they all evenly matched in the hands of a compotent player?

I don't think that there's one character that kicks ass without fail. I can always get in a good curb stomp with Kirby, so I use other characters, but I'm not sure if that's because I'm so used to the character or because of the character itself.
I do find Roy and Marth utterly useless, though. Ness is fun because I have pretty good control over his range attack, which absolutely no one expects. Even Jigglypuff can be okay, except that I always do Down+B by accident.

I've found that Jigglypuff kicks a suprising amount of ass.

Heh, yeah. Much of the time because people assume you're going to be practice.

I knew a guy who could pretty much clear the room with Roy.

Both can be devastating if used correctly.

Dr.mario is my curb stomper beat the challenge that had gananodalf mewtwo and giga bowser (151 or 51)?

For me it was Mewtwo though Gannondworf, Roy and Falcon charge moves were deadly.

I know a couple of hardcore Melee-ers and they both swear by Zelda/Sheik.

Hm. I've never seen anyone use them, and to be honest I always forget that they're there. I would say that I'll start trying them out, but it's a bit of a waste of time when the new one comes out in 6 months or so.

In my dorm last year, my buds and I would play some SBM. And there were these two dudes that were unstoppable as Roy and Marth. Yet now that I think about it, they were pretty tough to beat as any character.
It really all depends on skill and adaptability to the character/battle situation IMO. Any character can be lethal if used right.

I used to drive my friends nuts as Pichu.

One of the amazing things about Melee is how balanced it is. Even with tons more characters, it's more balanced than the first game. Ness and Kirby were clearly in charge in SSB, but in Melee it's tougher to call. Here's how I would rate the characters in Melee:
Link
Young Link
Dr. Mario
Mario
Marth
Roy
Kirby
Captain Falcon
Mewtwo
Peach
Luigi
Falco
Fox
Ganondorf
Zelda/Sheik
Ness
Samus
Pikachu
Jigglypuff
Donkey Kong
Yoshi
Mr. Game & Watch
Ice Climbers
Bowser
Pichu
This is, of course, impacted by what characters I like to play, but I've attempted to be objective - Mr. G&W is one of my favorites, for instance. There's also the fact that Smash Bros. is not just a fighting game. I've ranked the characters according to multiplayer brawls, but things are different if we talk about who's best for Adventure mode(Quick, maneuverable types like Marth get a lot better).
Some more notes:
Just plain great characters - Link(both), Mario(both), Marth and Roy. The bigger sword-wielders tend to dominate due to their combination of power and range. Mario and Young Link are just all-around great.
Solid characters. Kirby, Samus, Peach, Sheik - Reliable, but not quite as dominant.
Skill intensive characters - Fox, Falco, Captain Falcon, Ganondorf, Mewtwo, Luigi. These guys tend to be better in one-on-one matches, where things aren't as random.
Big guys - Bowser, Donkey Kong. They have good potential but their size and lack of quickness makes them punching bags a lot of the time.
Unpredictable - Jigglypuff, Pikachu, Pichu. Usually they get squished by tougher characters, but they can surprise you. Jigglypuff in particular can utterly destroy a match with some timing and luck, especially on a small battlefield.
Decent, but weird - Ness, Yoshi, Ice Climbers, Zelda. These characters are a bit lacking but certainly have their strengths.

I'd agree with all this.
Never been able to get the hang of Fox,Falco,Yoshi or Zelda.

Link is definitely among the strongest, crazy range and uber GTFO-move with his skank-spin.

Both have surprisingly long recovery range thanks to their chainable forward B smash, both have insane power if you hit right(Marth with the tip of his sword, Roy with the hilt), and counter attack is a pain in the ass. Add respectable speed and awesome range and you have good characters. In my experience Captain Falcon used correctly, Fox, and Shiek are the most broken characters.

Ah okay, I'll give them a go next time I play.
Captain Falcon is awesome, he got me through Event 50. I love using Shiek too.

Dudes, Fox.
He is so fast, and his jump/kick up move is deadly.

Hows the newer smash brothers?
I never played any since I dont have someone to play games with. But I must admit I am interested just because snake is in it.

It's not out yet.
On the topic of Melee, there was also a guy who could clean house with Ice Climbers. We all hated him.

Damn, its a wii game?
Seems like it has so long ago I saw the trailer with snake in it. I thought for sure it would have been out on GC now. I had to go look it up and double check.

Haha yeah, I love using Peach. Yoshi's fun as well, especially when you drop them off the edge in an egg. Classic.

Yep, Smash Bros. Brawl. Hopefully it'll be out in Australia by mid January so I can grab it while I'm there, otherwise I'll have to wait.
That's very wishful thinking though.
