It's just an optical illusion based on how the stretch marks are drawn.

Grow up, you hooligans!

These guys wear tights. If you're trying to draw them realistically...there's going to be a bulge.

If anything, the artists are trying to DE-emphasize it!

Actually, the reason DC heroes wear thier undies on the outside is based on why circus performers used to.

it prevents their little performer from being quite so prominant.

Of course, back then the costumes were supposed to be cloth and now they all look like they're painted on, so we end up with litmus tests like these.

Well, from a real-world perspective, the reason why superheroes wear their skivvies on the outside is because of the crappy coloring and printing technology that was used back in the early days of comics. Color's were produced in those days using different grades of screens of blue, red, and green. It was common for one of the color plates to be inadvertently dropped from the printed pages. If the characters were dressed in single color unitards and the wrong plate containing the one of the colors for the costume was dropped, the character could appear to be naked (depending on the shading of the remaining colors. It happened more than once. So they designed all of the costumes to have different color shorts, so that even if a plate was dropped that made the rest of the body appear to be flesh tone, they'd at least still have the extra color on their shorts to make it look like they had something on.

Alex Ross is patterning that face after Fred MacMurray, of My Three Sons and the Shaggy Dog. My understanding is that it's an old tradition to use MacMurray as the model for Cap.

However, with all due respect to Alex Ross' lavish art, his Captain Marvel always looks vaguely retarded to me.

Its funny how female characters are constantly drawn with their nipple's poking through their spandex uniforms, yet the guy's junk is always well padded or missing.

That's because a majority of comic artists are males.
