And guess who were stopping in on?” And as the fog moves away you see Ralph standing on the hand of the Spectre ***This is the scene from last week’s “Next in 52”***Ralph tells the Spectre that he knows that the boundary between life and death can not be breached without a price and he is willing to pay it. The Spectre looks down at Ralph and then gets a devilish grin on his face. The Spectre then closes his fist and takes Ralph and Fate into deep space and shows then Jean Loring. The Spectre says that he can not punish without a host and offers Ralph his power and in return the Spectre with bring back Sue. Jean wakes up and turns into Eclipso and lunges at Ralph. Ralph fights back to which Jean replies “You’re going to fight back? That’s a nice change of pace! God knows your wife didn’t”. Ralph grabs Jean and tells her that he will show her Hell and they disappear.

Skeets is looking for Rip Hunter but Waverider won’t help him and tells Skeets that Rip Hunter’s real name is even secret to him. Skeets then asks Waverider “Do you know where the golden metal that makes my body impervious to the ravages of time portals comes from? Do you know from whose corpse it was burned off? Week 27, Day 5
Nanda Parbat: While Richard Dragon is teaching Renee fighting moves, Tot is deciphering the Bible of Crime. After training Renee find Charlie coughing and asks him how him when did he quit to which he responds “Not soon enough”. Renee asks Charlie how long he has and he says “not long. Tot says it’s metastasized”. Renee asks “Why me Charlie? Eight Billion people, why me?” to which he replies “That’s the Question isn’t it?” Afterwards Renee and Charlie meet up with Tot whom has deciphered some of the Crime Bible where we find out that there was a village called Gatham which is where Gotham comes from. And that “…absent its knight-protector, the apostle stakes his bloody claim devouring the heart of the twice named Daughter of Cain”. Upon looking at the picture in the bible Renee realizes that it is not Cain but Kane as the woman in the picture resembles Batwoman.
Week -84, Day -2:
The Dibny House: Ralph and Eclipso appear in the Dibny Home. Ralph using the powers of the Spectre takes away Jean’s dark side so that she can witness what she did to Sue with the knowledge of right and wrong. Ralph’s vengeance on Jean is to leave her in a time loop so that she can witness what she did over and over for all eternity. When Sue is about to pick up the telephone Ralph screams and he appears back in space with Jean Loring/Eclipso back in her suspended status as the Shadowpact had left her. Ralph then tells Fate to get him out of here and to go to Nanda Parbat.
Next Week in 52: Has three panels. 1 with Batwoman, the second one with the Red Tornado’s head on the “modern art’ statue getting shot at, and the third is the Emerald Head.

Sounds like interesting issue to me, but it's a shame that they are going the cancer route with the Question. I'll be interested to see how that plays out.

i imagine itll be fine with the question, somehow in the end he'll be switched out, or magically get cured, etc etc... especially cause all this being thrown in our faces...
as for the time thing..hm.mm after readint this issue i must say what the hell?! Time must be screwed if Rip was gettin aid from everyone else (from Chronos, to Time Commander, etc)... Hence to be Time Masters'... and Goodbye Waverider... so skeets is setting the future in motion having toasted waverider (to produce his armor)... so sumone set for 500 years in the future re-created skeets for a purpose... to screw up time... where's rip wen u need him? supernova? lying in plain view? or perhaps the 52 seconds are protecting his identity?! or him?!

well now we know why the question would always tell montoya to stop smoking when the first met. so now we see that time stood still when skeets killed waverider. which was interesting. this was a good issue i think. the past couple weeks have been downers, but this was a good one again. i doubt that those seconds were the ONLY representation of 52. 52 must have a bunch of meanings, maybe all the random 52 things throughout the comic is suppose to tell us that

I doubt that Question is going to die by cancer. Thats just not a way that heros usually die by, and giving him cancer gives the writer several options to make him somehow live instead of say him suddenly getting shot in the head.

I wonder if perhaps The Question might become Fate
I doubt it. And I doubt Ralph becomes Fate, either, though he now, technically, has The Spectre under his belt as a cosmic title. I think he's going to Nanda Parbat to visit Rama Kushna, who is the death goddess who resurrected Boston Brand to become Deadman. If I were going down the list of people in the DCU who I'd be asking about death, not counting The Endless, I'd hit up The Spectre, then The Phantom Stranger, and if not them, then Rama Kushna. She built the city to be a haven for souls, allowing the spirits of the dead to become material again. So, maybe he's gonna' ask her to bring Sue to Nanda Parbat?
I'unno. Interesting.

I wonder if perhaps The Question might become Fate
Fate's cryptic mysticism + Question's enigmatic insight = least informative dialogue ever. As readers, I don't think we could be expected to handle that level of twisted subtlety. The only fictional character who is even capable of saying less with more words is George W. Bush.
I doubt that Question is going to die by cancer. Thats just not a way that heros usually die by, and giving him cancer gives the writer several options to make him somehow live instead of say him suddenly getting shot in the head.

Hey, kids! Read the new and improved* "The Question" monthly from DC Comics!

Three days before never.
Weak Greg. Seriously seriously weak. I've gotta say I am severely pissed off by this one. And to blame it on smoking? Something he's never been shown doing? Heck, even with Captain Marvel they knew to blame it on something he was exposed to in his line of work. Bad show DC, bad show Greg. I sincerely hope this doesn't go the expected route.
On the other hand, another nail in the coffin of Chuck's version of Richard Dragon. I think we can officially say that one's buried now.
Say, correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm not a Deadman buff...

Yeah, in Nanda Parbat, the dead take on material bodies, the evil in men's souls disappear, and the living do not age. So yeah, he could live eternally there, probably. I'm not too sure anymore. Rama Kushna "died" a while back, but returned shortly afterwards to task Deadman with returning all the souls of the evil men who were at peace in Nanda Parbat, so I'm assuming that the place still works the same as it used to if she wanted Boston to bring them back.

Okay. I have a complete run of that series, which I keep next to my complete run of Azrael, my near complete run of Richard Dragon, and my woefully incomplete run of Batman issues by Denny...
And I made sure to check most of the issues before posting, particularly looking for the flashback scenes, and, well, after sex.
And... I didn't recheck the first issue. In which he smokes and gets lectured by Tot, because it was uncharacteristic and he hadn't done it since College. Ugh. I feel terrible. My bad. Sorry Greg, I suck, and I flew off the handle when I read this week's revelation.

That comic has been out of print for what? 15, 20 years? At least 10. It's not like we can just grab it off the shelf. If you want to say what happened in the issue that's cool but to imply a poster is lazy for not having read every comic ever published is just rude.

Yes. So far, his behavior re: Renee has been similar to his behavior re: Huntress in Cry for Blood. He doesn't make it his business to manipulate people, he just shows them other options, new possiblities, to get them out of whatever rut they're stuck in.

This comic is honestly turning into a place where writers can put all their dark thoughts. Am I supposed to be enjoying it or not?
Because I'm not.
Not all of their dark thoughts. At least, not unless there's going to be some nasty twists, which does sound more possibly as of this week. The Black Marvel family is, insanely, one of the best Shazam stories I've seen in ages. I feel like I shouldn't be grinning at the island of mad scientists... but... *Taps user title.* The In space bits are fun - The Emerald Head of Ekron, why didn't I think of that? And Richard Dragon back to being Chuck Norris crossed with Mr. Miyagi crossed with Yoda, and hanging out in Nanda Parbat... that's a happy sunny thought, not a dark one.
Of course it could still all go horribly wrong, as Ralph, Booster, and Skeets have clearly showed us.
Or it could still all go horribly boring, as John Henry has clearly shown us.

Um. Why doesn't the Spectre have a host? Did I miss something? I thought Crispus Allen became his host in Infinite Crisis?

The Spectre gave Crispus a year to make his decision, so technically the Spectre was without a host for 52.

I am surprised that people didn't see this thing with the Question coming, it seems like every conversation he and Montoya had was about death and dying. In my mind, the Question has been grooming Montoya to take over the mantle of "the Question" from the beginning.
Also it fits with DC diversifying it characters. Old Question=white guy, New Question=Latina Lesbian woman.
Dr. Fate is going to pick his next host in some fifth week series I think, so I doubt it will be Ralph. One of the candidates will be Detective Chimp, if I remeber correctly. Maybe Ralph will become Rip Hunter.

I will FREAK if DC kills one of my favourite characters and replaces him with one of the characters I loathe the most. C'mon, DC, not every character you have has to be a legacy character. I want to believe that common sense will prevail, but Rucka has a tendency to cram his pet characters down his readers throats.
So apart from the conversations, were there any other clues that Vic was sick? I s'pose that might explain why Montoya has done a better job in fights than Vic. (Though again, that might also be an example of Rucka cramming his pet characters down our throats. Have I mentioned how much I hate Montoya? Grr.)

DC doesn't seem to have any issues or concerns about changing/killing characters that weren't originally theirs or at least seems like that to me. Look how much has happened to the Charlton Comic Characters; blue beetle dead, capt. atom is now the monarch, etc.

I guess now's as good a time as any to make my first post.
Anyway.
I too hope that Q's "cancer" is part of some larger plot, and that he'll continue to serve as The Question rather than die or be consigned to some sort of Oracle-esque role. I'm already pretty upset about Booster.
In more of a "big picture" sense, I'm really sick of this change-for-the-sake-of-change, diversification-for-the-sake-of-diversification garbage. Minority heroes? Cool! I'm all for it. But the way in which it's being done is borderline offensive. So, what, a minority character isn't good enough to be his or her own hero? They have to be forced into some established, recognizable slot in the DCU? This isn't your father's Question -- our new Question is a drunken lesbian! She's edgy! Dare we say it...EXTREME!
...Doesn't that kind of defeat the point of introducing the minority character in the first place? Shouldn't there be something new to say? Why throw away a great opportunity by shoehorning it in to something we already know, painting it blue, and insisting it's somehow different? Obviously it's important to the writers that Montoya isn't a middle aged white male. So, why throw her in to a role created by one? Shouldn't her development as a hero naturally lead her somewhere else?

It'd also explain why the hell he isn't using it at all, despite it being his one and only "power." Y'know how easy it would've been for him and Renee to get through Kahndaq if they'd have been using psuedoderm and the binary gas properly? Would've been a cinch.
Hey all. New here. I just started reading cbr a few months ago and pick-up a comic here an there. But I have been buying 52, and I love it. I was never really into DC as a kid. I think that's what is making 52 so much fun for me. Plus it's a great serial story, comes out weekly, and has the "feel" of the great comics of the 80s IMO. Thanks for having me here.
Anyway...this idea leapt out at me after week 27:
Are we gearing up to Vic Sage becoming the next human host for the Spectre? Now, I like The Question (don't know much about him admittedly). But if he became the Spectre, I wouldn't really have THAT much a problem with it. It's much better than if he died outright. Plust DC can have some fun with a Renee Montoya Question, and of cours bring back 'ol Vic whenever they want.
Anyone else pick-up on the movement to this happening?

Nope. Crispus Allen is the new host of the Spectre. Spectre gave Allen a year to decide if he wanted to do it, which is why Spectre is still hostless in 52.
However, Vic Sage as the new Dr. Fate.......?
D'oh! :D

Isn't the eventual new Fate given the lastest Wizard issue? No the eventual Fate of the Helmet is to be donned by one of Kent Nelson's descendents.

No no, he really should have. Because I was acting like an authority (thinking I was), and bad mouthing a creator (one I have the highest respect for, as a matter of fact). I had that one coming.
Back to my hole now.
meh, there's still more polite ways to say it.
Being right doesn't excuse being rude.

anyone else read the section for newsarama... saying that apparently skeet's outer shell isnt from waverider.. if that isnt so... then who was he talking about?! BOOSTER?!
I think Skeets was just trying to scare Waverider. You know, because he's eeevil.

I think so. Didn't Skeets say the armor was from five centuries in the future? That's about the time period that he and Booster came from.
EDIT: to complete my train of thought... Booster Gold's armor was apparently also immune to the ravages of time travel.

"Don't trust The Question. It lies." - Rip Hunter's blackboard, if I remember right.
I agree with the theory that Vic is lying to Renee to manipulate her into giving up the smoking habit. If I could pull it off, I would be willing to do that to get my dad and my friends to stop smoking. Problem is, they've known me for too long, so they know that I've only smoked a few cigars and a few cigarettes, ever.

Just a thought here about Ralph.
The DC Solicitations for Weeks 40 - 43 state that Ralph will solve the greatest mystery of all. What if the Mystery is "When/Who is Rip Hunter?"
