Well,
I would have posted this in the newbie section, but I see there isnt one. :evilangry Anywho, I collected comics awhile back when I was younger, and got out of the habbit. Now I find myself back at it again, but this time I would like to put a little more into it. I actually went to a comic book store tonight to check out what they had, but I was a little creeped out by the company in that place, so im going to try to stick to online buying. Any good ideas on where to start my collection?!? I picked a few things up off of ebay so far, Hanna-Barbera's The Flintstones #1 MINT for a total of $11.00 including shipping, and also ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN # 424 for $4.00, I'm not sure if this was a good deal or not. Im just kind of playing it by ear browsing through and randomly selecting. I really dont like to do that, but I dont know what to exactly look for. I also was wondering, I been checking this site out for values of comics, for example it says that The Flintstone comic I got is worth $250 in mint condition, is this true? Im not understanding if thats what its worth then why would someone sell it for $11.00. I'm not getting in to collecting comics just for the money, but its an added bonus. Well, if you have any tips for me i would be very greatful,
Thanks Guys.:)

The CGC means the comic has been graded, if it hasn't been graded it's judged according to condition in the first column. So it's probably FINE +

If you'd like some reading suggestions, I'd recomend looking into the All-Star tiles (Superman, along with Batman and Robin). They're a relatively recent series addition to the DC line. It's a comic line meant for new readers who don't have to worry about years of continuity.

Although this might be the wrong forum for it, I also recomend reading some Ultimate Marvel collections. They're basically revamps of the original titles as well (similar to the All-Star line).

Otherwise I can just recomend picking a name you like, and doing a little background research on the comic title. Do a wikipedia search on anything you might be interested in reading. You get some quick plot summaries that way.

One thing you might want to think over is whether you want to read comics or collect them.

If collecting is your bag, check out your local comic shop; many store owners will put out bins of back issues for a dollar or two apiece. You won't find an issue of Action Comics #1 (unless the owner is both incredibly fortunate and stupid), but you can find back issues that may appeal to you in one way or another. In the same vein, most areas will have periodic shows or mini-conventions. Depending on the size and focus of the venue, there will usually be plenty of vendors present with large bins of back issues and often rarities for sale. Be sure to price compare when you buy; I recently attended such a gathering and found a $12 price discrepancy between identical copies of the same book.

The alternative is to read and collect as you go; pick out a few titles that catch your interest and pick them up monthly. When you're done reading them, bag and board the books and put them away; bags, boards, and boxes are all available at your local retailer. By and large, most collectors tend to do both - they read (and save) the monthly titles they likes, and shop around for older books that they find appealing.

As far as buying online as opposed to from a brick-and-mortar store, I think it detracts from the experience. The clientele may seem a little "creepy," as you put it, but think of it this way. Comic book buyers are like bears: they're just as afraid of you as you are of them, and they won't hurt you. :)

Hope this helps!
