View Full Version : The Pipeline PREVIEWS Podcast for January 2007

Just to warn everyone:

Jamie and I recorded the next PREVIEWS-themed podcast tonight. It ran very very very long. I'll likely be breaking it up into two parts. Listening through both of them will be very rewarding to someone out there.

But, it means we covered EVERYTHING! Nearly literally!

And I've lined up two more creator interviews for the podcast. You should be hearing both of those before Thanksgiving. Stay tuned for announcements there.

Yeah, just try and count how many different items we mention from the new Previews catalog. I guarantee you won't get a wider view of the catalog anywhere else! :D

We have but one problem with the podcast now: It's so long that my editing program chokes on it. I'm looking into ways to fix that now. ::sigh::

Didn't someone on this board once have a suggestion for how to get Garageband to accept files longer than an hour to edit? Help!

Augie, I think Bryan Deemer over at Comic Geek speak has gotten Garage Band to handle files longer than an hour. You might want to check with him on how to do it.

I'm looking forward to listening to the episode. I really enjoyed the previous Previews podcast you guys did.

Thanks, John. I think I'll go drop Mr. Deemer a line. If ANYONE knows how to edit large audio giles, I'd expect it would be him.

(I really have to stop busting him about that, don't I?)

Random Previews question of the day - what's up with the Marvel solicits for January 2007? Is Civil War being released that month? I'm confused. The Marvel Previews catalog has a one page checklist that has CW #7, ASM #537 & 538 and FF#542 & 543, but no real solicitation. Did these get pushed back? This page did have my absolute favorite image in the whole catalog - a Ron Garney drawn image with Cap & Spidey (in his red & blue costume!) & Punisher.

Have you listened to Raging Bullets? Episode 25 was about 10 hours long and released in four parts... It is great stuff but there are only so many hours in the day...

Augie De Blieck Jr.
11-08-2006, 09:30 AM
Raging Bullets is so NOT the podcast for me. I couldn't take that level of detail in a Marvel podcast, let alone a DC podcast.

Once upon a time, there was a podcast that lasted 5 hours long. The reason had something to do with licensing restrictions. The guy could play music in his show so long as it qualified as a radio program by being at least five hours, or something like that. So he'd do his half hour or hour show, and then fill the rest of it up with silence. That goes back to the earliest podcasting days, and I'll be danged if I can remember all the details. Too bad - it's a great story.

And Bryan already got back to me with the GarageBand solution. Yay! Thanks, John.

The regular Pipeline Podcast will be up tonight, and I suspect I'll hold off on the Pipeline Previews Podcast (part 1) until Friday night, just to space things out right.

Yeah, Raging Bullets is a niche podcast to be certain. You either love it or don't. As a hardcore DC fan, I love it. I just wish they would break it up in to smaller chunks.

If you wait until Friday to put the Pipeline Previews Podcast then I'll listen to it after my journey to CGS 200. I'm sure I can find another few podcasts to listen to while I travel...

I finished editing the second half of the podcast last night and it should go up tonight at some point, for all your weekend listening needs.

After that, I have a nightmarishly long interview with Chris Eliopoulos to edit into something listenable. . .

Oh, and PREVIEWS comes out on Wednesday, so Jamie and I will start planning the next Pipeline Previews Podcast. WHICH WILL BE SHORTER. MUCH SHORTER.

This podcast covered the Jan 2007 stuff, and my assumption is that NO we won't get ASM, FF, Iron Man, etc...

Feb's: http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=8895
does have an ASM listing and listings for other books too:

BLACK PANTHER #25
Written by REGINALD HUDLIN
Penciled by KOI TURNBULL
Cover by MICHAEL TURNER
"FOREIGN AFFAIRS" PART 3 -- OFFICIAL TIE-IN TO CIVIL WAR
CLASSIFIED INFORMATION!
32 PGS./Rated T+ ...$2.99

CAPTAIN AMERICA #25
Written by ED BRUBAKER
Pencils and Cover by STEVE EPTING
Variant Cover by BRYAN HITCH
CLASSIFIED INFORMATION!
48 PGS./Rated T+ ...$3.99

IRON MAN #15
Written by DANIEL & CHARLES KNAUF
Penciled by PATRICK ZIRCHER
Cover by ADI GRANOV
Variant Cover by GERALD PAREL
CLASSIFIED INFORMATION!
32 PGS./Rated A ...$2.99

The actual "CIVIL WAR #7" book has already been solicited for, back in September's Previews. That book will ship just when it's ready. WE HOPE IT'S IN JANUARY! :D

I think I see where you're a tad bit confused. A book doesn't HAVE to be in Previews to ship in a specific month. For example, DD: Father was last in previews in October 2005 and just shipped last week. Just because a book was knocked off schedule doesn't mean it need to be re-solicited for. Marvel just simply took CW #7 and the related books and will push them out to the following month.

Does this make sense? In many cases, publishers don't want to re-solicit. They may if they think their orders will go up, but what's bad is that if you need to re-solicit then there is a minimum of a 4 MONTH delay in it getting on the shelves. I think it's from 1 month advance in getting the listing actually to Previews and then the 3 month lead time.

torippu

Jamie,

Here's where I'm confused:

The Marvel Jan. 2007 catalog lists CW#7, ASM #537 & 538 and FF#542 & 543 in a one page ad with no solicit copy and/or ship dates.

Checking the DCBS excel spreadsheet for Jan. 2007 shipping books, none of these books are listed for order (unless the spreadsheet that I downloaded has been revised since the beginning of the month).

The Feb. 2007 Marvel solicits skip over these ASM issues and go right into the "Back in Black" storyline starting in #539.

So, if you don't have a pull list at your LCS, when do you order these books? Were they already solicited? Will there be an addendum to the Feb. 2007 shipping DCBS spreadsheet?

Does this make any sense why I'm so corn-flused?

Ok... I think we're getting somewhere... slowly... ;)

ASM #538 was solicited for in the Sept catalog:
SEP062082 AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #538

So it looks like it may SHIP in Jan. See, it would have and SHOULD have shipped in Dec, but instead they are pushing it out 1 month. Marvel didn't need to waste a page in the catalog by re-soliciting it all over again, so they just put in on page 2 where all the books are listed.

See kids? It helps to keep those old DCBS sheets! :D

Edit - If you ordered it from your LCS or DCBS or wherever, your pre-order will still cover it. If it was cancelled and re-solicited they depending on your dealer's policy you may have to re-order it. But in this case here we're all safe.

So it looks like a lot of these books were already solicited? Then, it all starts to make sense now! This is a problem when I don't pre-order books - I have a pull list and am happy when new issues show up in my folder each week.

I gotcha. I hope this helped. In the future, if you wanna keep track of what you're "due" just use Excel to keep track of the issues you've ordered or have pulled and then once a week just check them off as they arrive. I got my latest DCBS box yesterday so that's what I'll be doing later on this morning! ;)

That is essentially what I do. I copy the data from the DCBS order form into another Exceil file which has everything I've got on order with DCBS. I've got VBA macros in the file that mark what ships each month based on the data in the weekly shipping list from Diamond. I then move the data from that file into my inventory file once I get the weekly DCBS shipment. It makes it really easy to see how much I've got in the queue with DCBS at any given time...

Q - For those other DCBS users, have you logged on to their site before? They have lists of what's shipped and what's been ordered for all your stuff even if you've been there or not. It's pretty cool! ;)

That is a neat idea. I still get 80% of my stuff from my LCS, so my orders to DCBS aren't that large. I do have an excel spreadsheet where I transfer all of my orders to DCBS to. Next to the orders, I have a column where I manually mark when the item has shipped and when I receive it. I'm not a programming/database guru like the rest of you, but if there is a way to automate/simplify this process, I'd love to learn how to do this.

Q - For those other DCBS users, have you logged on to their site before?
Yep - logged on after you mentioned this service many a moon ago. I only get monthly shipments now so it's good to see what I've got coming from time to time.

I've put together another Excel file that parses text files of the data from the website and gives me a run down of what I've spent each week, what is still on order and other stuff like that. I wish that there was an easy way to download the data. As it is I've cutting and pasting off the website into text files which is a pain.

With 55 order lists and 179 shipment lists, yeah, it is a bit of a pain to have to cut and paste them into text files when they change...

I have put together an Excel file that downloads the data but it is dog slow. I haven't had time to work on it lately to see if I can speed it up to a reasonable processing time...

The Sundance Film Festival announced its lineup for 2007, which includes a screening of the live action Bugmaster feature, based on the award-winning Mushishi manga series and directed by famed anime director Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira, Steamboy).

The original Mushishi manga includes seven volumes and the related anime series has 26 episodes. Del Rey will be publishing Mushishi in the States beginning in spring 2007.
