I don't see any mention of this yet, so I figured I'd start a thread. According to Peter David's blog, we may be seeing the return of the Scarlet Spider-Man. I'm not a Spidey reader, but I figured someone cares. :D
Finishing proofreading "Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #14." As to what's coming up in that issue, two words: Ben Reilly. I will say no more than that (okay, Deb Whitman and the Vulture). But...Ben Reilly.

Maybe the "Evil Uncle Ben" is going to take this name?

Is it me or is Friendly Neigbourhood really pushing it's luck?
First off evil uncle Ben, then retconning (unless it was just one of his tricks) Mysterio'ss death now Ben Reilly? What next De Wolfe turns up? Kraven digs himself out of his grave? Norman Osborn clone? Really it is pushing it's luck in what it does.
I read Friendly Neighbourhood and I don't much care for it, it seems to be just somthing dedicated to Retcons at the moment.

Yeah, the "Evil Ben" taking the name would be a possibility. I just don't see it being the Scarlet Spider though.

i think too, that a return of ben reilly (whatever the explanation will be) doesn't mean a return of scarlet-spider.
and the evil uncle ben... didn't liked it.

With the revolving door of characters in SM I am not surprised to hear this. However, I would really be surprised if it was the same Ben Reilly we all know and love. PAD would really be pushing it....

If it's well-written, I'd like to see the Scarlet Spider in action again... I miss that costume of his, as well as his impact webbing (got myself a Heroclix figure of the Scarlet Spider, it looks real good).

So the way things are now the clone saga never exist right? Meaning no dead Aunt May or Doc Oct. And no Kaine or other spider clone right??!!
If that is the case then it should hurt to bring Ben back into the mix. They just don't have to go down the Maxium Cloneage route. Keep it down to one clone maybe change the story up a little. They did with everything else.

I'm one of the few people who love the scarlet spider and I personally would like him to come back. I loved him but yet did'nt like the idea that he took over for peter. I prefer that he has his own series or joins a team. I'd really be damn happy if they brought him back though :)

I have a question. Now I know that Ben Reilly appeared to have died in ASM #149. But then Peter threw him into a smokestack. Now:
1) How did he survive the blast?
2) Survive being thrown into an active smokestack?

1) How did he survive the blast?
2) Survive being thrown into an active smokestack?I believe it was stated that The Jackal had rescued him from the smokestack before it blew. Not entirely sure though. Plus, it was always difficult to discern whether or not he was lying and in many cases, it was never really certain either way.

I was a fan of the SS too, although his death seemed pretty clean cut :( Methinks any duplicate Peter will be more connected to 'The Other' than Ben.

I may be remembering wrong, but I don't think Reilly ever went down the smokestack. I believe the Jackal spirited away Ben after the explosion, and left behind an already-dead clone. This is the one that Peter dumped in the smokestack, and it's remains were still there years later.

Hey now that you mention it, that does sound familiar. Thanks to all! :)

What I would really like to see, if we DID have a return of Ben Reilly, is a re-connection with the great Terry Kavanaugh creation, Shadowforce Alpha, which Kavanaugh seemed prepared to introduce as a major group involved in Ben's life, and it had a long story through all the 1995 Spider-Man Super Specials, but sadly, Kavanaugh never went anywhere with the storyline.
I especially liked the character Strongarm.

As much as I want the Scarlet Spider to return it isn't going to be him as Marvel probably won't let any writer use a clone or any characters involved in that era. It's got to be Uncle Ben using the Ben Reilly name.

im staying away from this issue quicker then the south park kids in that one episode that had to deal with Stem cells and Christopher Reeve.

I personally loved Ben Reily and aspects of the clone saga , not all of it though. I really can't see them resurecting the scarlet spider...he wasn't part of there most popular ASM era and i can see nothing but angry fans as a result.

Some of the clone saga was fun, but it went on way too long and ruined alot of aspects of the character that had to be ret-conned. I think if he comes back it'll open a whole new can of worms.

Ben Reilly returning could be amazing if done right. That means:
*An explanation of his return that is short and doesn't have too much clone saga baggage
*No Jackal, Carrion, Spidercide, Seward Trainer, Gaunt, Kaine or any other clone saga characters returning with him
*After his introduction, mention Clone Saga ONLY when absolutely neccessary and only in passing
*Establish that he's around and friendly with Peter, but don't bring him around every month, save him for the important moments in Peter's life.
All that being said, the way PAD mentioned his name, it's pretty obvious this will end up being Uncle Ben. Still, a man can dream.

Maybe it’s just a following up a few Ben Reilly plot lines... like The Burglar's daughter who found out Spider-Man was Ben Reilly.

I think Ben could be an interesting supporting character, but trying to play him as a seperate hero or making him anything other than OBVIOUSLY A CLONE would be tricky areas. Having two Spider-Men would just get silly. If I were bringing back Ben, I'd be tempted to depower him somehow and just put him in the supporting cast as Pete's blonde cousin/"brother".

I hate this so much cause I know it's just PAD F$#@ing with us. Ben Reily was an awesome character and I'd pick up Spider-Man agian if he was to return.

Maybe PAD is just messing w/ everyone and it's just going to be Peter Parker posing as Ben Riley to try to hide from SHIELD since he's no longer on their side and has gone anti reg. I hope thats not the case and I'm very wrong cause I loved the Ben Riley char and Scarlet Spider. He needs to come back and be put on the Avengers or another good team for a while then get his on mini and maybe his own solo book. I mean if we're getting a Moon Knight and an Iron Fist ongoing and a White Tiget mini there's no possible way that a Scarlet Spider book couldn't do the same and maybe even sell better. (no offense to the fans of those characters cause I like them too and the MK book is great and I can't wait to read IF, not so much with White Tiger to be honest)

Agreed with everything except for one point. I liked Kaine.

Wouldn't go so far as to say I loved it. But I didn't hate it, and I liked Ben a lot more than Pete.

Well, Peter and MJ were in the Daily Grind in a recent issue of FNSM. Maybe that was a small hint of things to come???

Jessica's story was pretty much resolved in Sensational vol 1 wasn't it?
Although I guess she might be intrigued by the umasking and it not being Ben under the mask...
Maybe Peter could hide out as 'Ben Reilly' following everything that's happened recently. I could live with that.

I'd like to see her come and ask Peter about Ben, since IIRC she actually met Peter while Ben was Spider-Man
But I imagine Peter will just use the name while on the run.

I think with Peter Parker fully exposed, Spidey will take up the identity created by his clone: Ben Reilly. Change the hair and a change of look, and he can become his clone. That way everyone will see Spiderman/Peter Parker, but in terms of a private life outside the costume, it would be under the name Ben Reilly.

Haha, that would be awesome. I'd love to see Peter bring back the Blonde Ben look for awhile.

I do hope for a return of Reilly as long as it makes sense. He was awesome for a Spider-man replacement.

Maybe they'll use him to screw with the heads of the public and make people think Parker wasn't Spider-Man. Like Peter will have Ben do what The Prowler did once except on a larger scale.
Any idea on how they can bring him back? I mean this is really racking my brain...He was impaled on a glider and turned to dust...how do you get him back from this? anything clone related could go really bad for marvel.

Yeah that's what I mean. She came to terms with Ben Reilly being Spider-Man and now he's not... its got to draw a few questions.
Did she ever meet Peter? Maybe she things Ben was leading a double life on top of Spider-Man

Yes. After several moments of panic about her seeing Ben & Peter together from the Spider-Men, MJ stepped in and told them that their fathers were twins "like on the Patty Duke show" and so they were very similar looking cousins.
Implausibly, Ben apparently gave Peter her phone number too, since he called Ben while he was there (for the first time!) to mention going to see the Avengers.

Fun issue. Plenty of set-up, and always good to see the Vulture.
