ok... last crappy review from me this week...
Local #8.
I've been partial to issue 3 as being my favorite ever since it came out, but #8 MIGHT have surpassed it. Probably not after I think about it for a while, but it's at least as good.
I wasn't stoked about the idea of this issue not having Meghan (Megan?) in it, but Nicky's story was rad. Seeing him run through all the stupid things I did when I was that age was great and somewhat nostalgic. Of course, Nicky's (re)actions were way more exaggerated than mine ever were, but it got you right into his head and his world. And the art... wow. Definitely the best issue for Ryan Kelley so far... except for the very last panel. Did he actually die at the end?? At first I thought it was just a look at Richie speeding away in the car from Nicky's vantage point with his head on the ground. But, after reading the afterwards (I can't remember if it was Brian's or Ryan's), I'm not sure he was actually alive. That one panel hurt the book for sure. Other than that, no complaints at all. I loved how Megan's postcards kept things grounded in the general Local narrative that is revolving around her self-discovery.
I wonder if the postcards she was sending helped or hurt Nicky's situation. Or did they really affect him at all. I thinking they maybe pissed him off more b/c she was traipsing aroundt he country, and he was stuck in Arizona. So he lashed out even more. I also thought the one card was strange where she said something like, "You'll go travel a lot too just like me." and then, a few sentences later, said, "Don't let anyone tell you what to do or how to be." But it sounded like a real postcard someone would have sent. Not that anyone sends me postcards, but I can imagine.
Yet another good entry this week from the indy publishers. 3 for 3... no, wait... 4 for 4... I forgot that there's no Dark Horse board, so Apocalypse Nerd counts as an indy too. Maybe I'll start a crap thread about that too... tomorrow. :)
