What song inspires you more than any other, gets you in a good mood, or you simply feel addicted to.

For me, it's Pardon Me by Incubus. When I heard that song, Uncle Reality Check bitchslapped me in the face and my eyes were opened to a lot of things in the world. I listen to it every day.

So. What's your Anthem.

It's hard to pick one; but I think Jeff Trott's Walk a Cloud (http://cdbaby.com/cd/jefftrott) would have to be pretty close.

I just like this song, it makes me feel good, and energizes me.

#1 is and will always be Change by Blind Melon:

I dont feel the suns comin out today
Its staying in, its gonna find another way.
As I sit here in this misery, I dont
Think Ill ever see the sun from here.
And oh as I fade away,
Theyll all look at me and say, and theyll say,
Hey look at him! Ill never live that way.
But thats okay
Theyre just afraid to change.
When you feel your life aint worth living
Youve got to stand up and
Take a look around you then a look way up to the sky.
And when your deepest thoughts are broken,
Keep on dreaming boy, cause when you stop dreamin its time to die.
And as we all play parts of tomorrow,
Some ways will work and other ways well play.
But I know we all cant stay here forever,
So I want to write my words on the face of today.
And then theyll paint it
And oh as I fade away,
Theyll all look at me and theyll say,
Hey look at him and where he is these days.
When life is hard, you have to change.

I really can't pick one. I like the Bellamy Brothers' "Old Hippie" pts. 1 and 2. I like "Stairway to Heaven." I love Ennio Morricone's soundtrack to the Man With No Name trilogy. I love Hendrix's version of "The Star Spangled Banner." Johnny Cash's "Don't Take Your Guns to Town" whips me and so does ZZ Top's "Sharp Dressed Man." Kyuss's "Demon Cleaner" and Queens of the Stone Age's "Someone's In The Wolf" are pretty creepy. There is no one song for me. That's why I keep buying music. Oh, yeah, and Iced Earth's "Gettysburg (1863)" is frakking epic.

IT'S MY JOBBy Mac McAnally; sung by Jimmy Buffet

In the middle of late last night I was sittin' on a curb
I didn't know what about but I was feeling quite disturbed
A street sweeper came whistlin' by
He was bouncin' every step
It seemed strange how good he felt
So I asked him while he swept

Chorus
He said "It's my job to be cleaning up this mess
And that's enough reason to go for me
It's my job to be better than the rest
And that makes the day for me"

Got an uncle who owns a bank he's a self made millionaire
He never had anyone to love never had no one to care
He always to seemed kind of sad to me
So I asked him why that was
And he told me it's because in my contract there's a clause
That says "It's my job to worried half to death
And that's the thing people respect in me
It's a job but without it I'd be less
Than what I expect from me"

I've been lazy most all of my life
Writing songs and sleeping late
Any manual labor I've done purely by mistake
If street sweepers can smile then
I've got no right to feel upset
But sometimes I still forget
Till the lights go on and the stage is set
And the song hits home and you feel that sweat

It's my job to be different than the rest
and that's enough reason to go for me
It's my job to be better than the best
and that's a tough break for me
It's my job to be cleaning up this mess
and that's enough reason to go for me

It's my job to be better than the best
and that makes the day for me

Four of them, not surprisingly, are early Beatles tunes: "Twist and Shout," "I Saw Her Standing There," "She Loves You," "I Want To Hold Your Hand."

The fifth is an equally popular song, but by a band far less illustrious than the Beatles: the Romantics' "What I Like About You."

Since I'm neither a wrestler nor a professional athlete, I don't feel the need to have an anthem.

...

Fine. "I Got Rhythm" by George and Ira Gershwin, as sung by anyone, really, but especially proto-doowop group the 5 Spirits of Ryhthm.

My Life by Billy Joel. All my life I've had people either making fun of the choices I've made or trying to tell me what I should be doing. The song reflects my wish that people would just stop trying to dictate to me what I should be doing and just let me do what I want to do.

I like some of Joel's stuff.

I was teasing you about the whole "wanting everyone to leave you alone and stop telling you what to do."

Tis all in jest.

That sounds like a song from the Cowboy Bebop soundtrack. Am I right? If so, let me tell you that I am really fond of the ending theme, of which name is "The Real Folks Blues", IIRC (it's been a while since I last watched an ep of that series).

See You Space Cowboy is the jazzier variation on The Real Folk Blues heard in the last episode. Same basic melodies, different lyrics and instrumentation. Both takes on the song are awesome.

When I was younger, my anthem was "It's the End of the World..." by R.E.M., because that captured the frantic pace of my whole life.

These days, it's a song by a local hip-hop performer, Sluggo from Atmosphere, one of the more reflective backpack types. It's somehow low-key and yet intense, with samples of spanish guitar and a little slasher movie scary music, and it sums up how I feel: like I've survived so much, lived so much, and I'm still walking tall with pride.

Always Comin' Back Home to You

To all my killers and my hundred dollar billers
To emo kids that got too many feelings

He held the register open while he counted her change
I was next in line which meant I was invisible
From where I stood I could see that the till was full
He didn't look the type to play superhero
So I stepped forth and paid for my cigarettes
Crept out the stores front door to chase a little breath
Bangles in my head, shake the song off
Another Manic Monday night, it's gonna be a long walk

A car pulled up, a fixed up cutlass
A woman and a child climbed out and left it runnin'
They went inside of the deli, placed an order
With the extra dollar fifty bottled water cuz the daughters picky
When they came out mommy gave me a glance
That said man can love an angel but he's got to take the chance
Already knew the deal, I lit one up and walk
So they got back in they oldsmobile, belted up, and took off

Thug love on the corner by the Walgreen's
Lookin at me like I'm just another square saltine
As I get closer I notice they showin' each other sketches
Out of they notebooks, reminded me of my old roots
I walk pass with a nod and a reminisce
Swear to god hip hop and comic books was my genesis
Respect the life and the fashions of the children
It's the only culture I've got, exactly what we've been buildin'

All of a sudden I'm in front of some man
No he's a youngin but he's got a gun in his hand
He looks fifteen, he looks frantic, no he looks afraid
Immediately apprehensive till I heard him say
“Do you want this It's not mine I promise
I found it on my block in between a couple garages
Didn't wanna leave it for a child to stumble over
I don't even know how to hold it.”

It was a thirty eight, the poor mans machete
Held it in my hand, thinking damn man it's heavier then expected,
Wedged it behind my belt buckle
Knowin that its evil, even thought that I could smell trouble
The extra strength felt weak,
But over there on the corner saw what I needed and proceeded to cross the street put the heat in the mail box to lose it
Figured that the post office knows whats best to do with it

Mosey down the road thinkin' bout the old
I use to roam this zone with two feet of snow
Right here, this use to be a record shop
I've gotten love, I've gotten drunk, I've gotten beat up in that parking lot
I've had my lake street pride for three decades
These alleyways, and these streetlights have seen my best days
Before I was a germ learnin' how to misbehave
All the way to the grave, south side is my resting place

Took a right on Lyndale I'm getting near
But then the road became empty and the people disappeared
The clowds ran away, opened up the sky
And one by one I watched every constellation die
And there I was frozen, standin' in my backyard
Face to face, eye to eye, starin' at the last star
I should've known, walked all the way home
To find that she wasn't here, I was still all alone

No matter where I am, no matter what I do
I'm always coming back home to you
They can leave me for dead they can take away my true
I'm always coming back home to you
Through the lies and the sins that ride the wind that blew
I'm always coming back home to you
As sure as the life in the garden that you grew
I'm always coming back home to you
No matter where I am, no matter what I do
I'm always coming back home to you
If only I had known what you already knew
I'm always coming back home to you
From the heaven I've had to the hell I been through
I'm always coming back home to you
I'm always coming back home to you

Yersh, it's a shame its dismissed by trendy magazines becuase of its lenght and heaviness. Its more catchy that half the triffle on the top 20 right now.

It's not my favourate Metalica song, but its up there. Its got to be their catchiest (sp?) though.

It's dismissed by those mags because they know next to nothing about real Metal. It's all about crappy rock and "Nu" rock (cuz that's not Metal to me). That song's pure genius, IMO. It has everything a real Metal song must have.

What's your fave Metallica tune?

TheLazy
01-01-2007, 06:56 PM
Toss up between Blackened or Disposable Heroes. It it funny how Metallica wrote songs that are completely relevant today, 20 yeas ago. Yeah I know they deal with universal themes, but every day for the past week the news has had stories about global warming and the Iraq war. Just find it amusing.

I like Blackened's snakey riff, and its really uppredictable the first couple of times you hear it. And DH has this big tension thing going on for like the first two minutes which is cool. I like leper Messiah too, but I like fightstars cover of it better. I just don't think Hetfield had developed his voice enough to carry the melody with the same kind of apathy that Simpson did in the cover version. Kickass riffs tho.

:)

Hmmm... Haven't heard that cover yet. Can you point me in the right direction so I can find it?

As for those songs, I love them. Not as much as MOP, but they're awesome songs, which stand in their own right. I agree, a kid who's starting to listen to them, can get those songs and immediately will know that Metallica is not only about destruction and death. It's about things that are important not only to the Metal world, but to the world as a whole.

If I can find the CD, Ill try hosting it for you.
