Let's Get You Guys and Gals Talking!
What Funny books tickle your fancy these days? Here's a good oppurtunity to suggest new books and stuff.
For Me It's Been....
Shaolin Cowboy
The art is simply breathtaking..though the writing for me seems difficult to understand but I'm thinking that's the point? Geoff Darrow is a great guy by the way, got a killer quick rusty the boy robot sketch from 'em.
Powers
I know, I know..few years late on this one but wow! I love mike oemings art..almost like a combination of mignola, bruce timm and of course the king himself, jack kirby. I bought hc collection one..can't wait for the others to come out.
also Cross Bronx(Oeming's The Man)
Civil War
Astonishing X-Men
and of course..
The Goon!
Though lately I've had mixed feelings because goon noir #1 for the most part was rubbish. I hope china town is worth the wait.

Justice
BPRD and Hellboy books
Civil War
Conan
any Essential Spider-man related books
Justice League of America
Mouse Guard
forgot one: Of Bitter Souls, a great little smaller press book by Norm Breyfogle and Chuck Satterlee..kind of heroes meet x-files meet the devil

I'v been drifting slowly towards the non-cape teritory:
> DMZ
a great simple and incredibly fun book with a very dinamic art.
> Fables
a masterpiece.
> HB and BPRD stuff
as allways
> Ultimates 2
two issues left. a great example of lost Mark Millar's genius for these who tried to read civil war
> Walking Dead
just TPBs becouse it's both an incredibly creepy thing and it also comes out in poland.
> Eternals
no need to itroduce Neil Gaiman i hope.
> Ocasional things that get printed here.
picked up a limited polish hardcover editions of Gaiman's "Black Orchidea" and "Books of Magic" both visualy and story-wise great!
and that's mostly it.
Edit:
Totally forgot about the Mosue Guard! It's also on my list!

The Goon!
Though lately I've had mixed feelings because goon noir #1 for the most part was rubbish. I hope china town is worth the wait.
Although I pickup more titles than I could comfortably sandwich into a post on this Messageboard, I do occasionally pickup Goon, so I'll answer to this. I agree with you regarding the uneven quality of the series. Sometimes I'm thrilled to death and other times not so much. I haven't read Goon Noir yet and probably won't, as I'm not a big fan of anthologies. Usually you get one or two great stories, but the rest often end up being midlan at best. I'll second your comments about Chinatown though. Hopefully it will live up to the hype and be worth the wait time.

I like anthologies, both literary and comicbook, and see the value
of "Goon Noir" and "Hellboy: Weird Tales". Buy the artist/writer some
time to finish another project and let others play with their toys.
But, I degress. Ya wanted pulls and much like Stygian, I have many.
Here are just a few, besides Hellboy/BPRD, and why:
1)Legion of Super Heros-Been reading this series since I was just a wee-fan.
All the different writers, artists, members, restarts. Even those times when
money was tight or I'd given up on comics, I bought The Legion.
2) 52-I'm a Giffen fan. Read all his stuff and see 52 is just one big Giffen
story (much like Annihilation) where other writers and artists are involved.
Plus, I like the idea of a weekly book that is so damn well written.
3)Powers-I too was late to the game but have enjoyed every issue, even
the Caveman stuff, and have the first 2 TPBs. Oemings and Bendis are the
best combo since a shot and a BEER.
4)Batman/Detective Comics-Next to Hellboy, Batmans' my fav and these
2 books are the core.
5)Eternals-Neil Gaiman writes some nifty stuff. Wonder what he could do
with the News Gods.
6)Astonishing X-Men-Whedon/Cassiday. Shut up and let them drive.
7)Planetary-When ever it comes out. Hey, Ellis/Cassidy. I'll wait.
I could go on but then I'd be here all day.;)

My pull list is:
Hellboy/ BPRD
Goon
Powers
Fell
Mouse Guard, now that my shop has started carrying it (WOO HOO!)
Plastic Man
Then a bunch of cancelled/ended stuff (American Century, Transmetropolitan)
As far as Goon Noir, I wasn't that impressed, hopefully Chinatown will live up to the hype

For me, I finally got it down to a manageable two- Hellboy and The RedStar. Now that Mike is no longer active in the drawing of Hellboy and The RedStar is on (permanent) hiatus, I got nuthin'. Which really isn't a terrible thing (save Mike no longer drawing HB regularily) as I can't afford comics in the first place :)
Catlin
10-29-2006, 10:52 AM
Nothing right now. I've kind of lost my interests in comics *shock! gasp!* except for anything Hellboy/BPRD related. I feel like I've had a personality transplant ;)

Battle Angel Alita: Yukito Kishiro
Alita last order : Yukito Kishiro
Fortified School : Takeshi Narumi- Shinichi Hiromoto
Sky Doll: Barbucci- Canepa
Blacksad: Dìaz Canales- Guarnido
Hellboy- BPRD
and a big collection of Italian comics that I am waiting for to read
Ken O
11-01-2006, 06:08 AM
Hellboy/BPRD- Naturally
Mouse Guard- Obviously
Flash- Couldn't have had a worse relaunch if they tried, but I'm still picking them up.
52- It's been a fun ride so far.
Teen Titans- I'm digging Kid Devil.
JSA- When it relaunches it is mine.
Checkmate and Justice League- Great books, but may get trimmed off the list.
Jonah Hex- Probably my favorite book on the market right now.
Fables- Been reading since issue 1.
Heroes for Hire- I did Daughters of the Dragon from reading all the old Iron Fist books. Great stuff right now. So the Iron Fist book will also get on the pull list.
X-Factor- The only mutant book worth reading.
Invincible- The best superhero book out right now.
Otto66
11-01-2006, 09:07 AM
X-Factor? (Otto66 holds the back of his head with his left hand
and SMACKS his forehead with his right hand)
How could I have forgotten? Yep, luv'n the Peter David writting
on this one. Shame Ryan Sook couldn't stay as artist. Thought
for sure this would be his breakout series.

Stopped buying comics about 6 months ago. I don't miss 'em. But I'll still grab any Hellboy/BPRD books when they come out.
I'm catching up on a bunch of old comics and trades and re-reading some favorites. (Camelot 3000!)

No. I live in GA. Not much chance of me going to the Carolinas.
Ellis did come to Dragon*Con a few years ago though and I sat in on his panel then. This was around the time he was just getting off shooting his Global Frequency TV Pilot. He's definately a fascinating guy to listen to. Really loves what he does.

Yeah, he had a panel Friday night at Heroes, but I didn't get there til Saturday so I missed it. I did stand in his line for 2 hours and he was really nice when I got my books signed.

I only buy Hellboy, BPRD, Shaolin Cowboy and Mouse Guard as they are released.
I am also amassing a few titles as they come out in tpb such as Y: The Last Man, Ex Machina and to some extent The Goon. I love Eric Powell's art but I struggle with his writing.
SpydaWeb
11-02-2006, 09:01 AM
Yeah, I too pickup several books in trade that are not by pull bin.
Y the last man and 100 bullets are a couple of them, I do this with all my DC books, as I'm not the biggest fan and there's only ever a reason to pick them up when someone recommends a particular story arc.
shonokin
11-02-2006, 09:14 AM
Hellboy as it comes out, BPRD in TPB form, the GOON in TPB, Mouseguard, The SPIRIT Archives and currently Death Note (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_note) which I'm enjoying greatly.
Aaron King
11-02-2006, 09:20 AM
A few of my pulls have already been mentioned, so I'll skip those, but I'll add:
Escapists
Ex Machina
I'm a moderate fan of Brian K. Vaughan. Escapists has been great so far. If you're at all interested in the process of making comic books, you should pick up this title. Ex Machina is great at times and sags in others.
Incredible Hulk
I can't get enough of Planet Hulk. It's like if Flash Gordon could turn into a giant raging monster.
Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis
If anyone here liked Kurt Busiek's work on Conan, check him out on Aquaman: a young, brash hero travelling the depths of the oceans after all of its great societies have been put back in the Dark Ages by DC's recent Crisis.
Criminal
Daredevil
Ed Brubaker has been fantastic lately. These two crime titles are the bee's knees. Criminal has been like a mix between Ocean's Eleven and Reservoir Dogs so far, which is awesome.
Kabuki
I must say that I initially bought issue 6 simply for the Mignola cover. After that, though, I was hooked. I have all the issues of the current series now and I'm looking forward to the trades of the previous series. David Mack is an amazing artist.
Usagi Yojimbo
Stan Sakai is an amazing cartoonist and I love his work, which is basically historical fiction set in Medieval Japan.
Secret Six
A fun DC title based on some great villains... my first real exposure to Gail Simone.
Seven Soldiers
This title just wrapped up, and it was a great ride. A huge epic made up of seven four-issue minis and two bookends. I think most people here would really get into the Frankenstein mini and they wouldn't need any of the other issues to "get" it.
Janzen
11-02-2006, 10:50 AM
Hellboy...of course...And ALL Mignolia fx. "Squid of Man"...Love it! Also "The Amazing Screw-On Head"!
Goon....But I was also dissapointed with the "noir-thing"!
Futurama...Have to stick to the comic books now!
AND
Pip & Norton...Only recently discovered this insane book!
Oh yeah...And then of course my all time favorite Jacques Tardi...

Anyone interested might dig the step-by-step that Stuart Immonen posted on the Drawing Board detailing the creation of a Nextwave cover.

I agree with you about Nextwave Rick. I'm a huge fan of the series and lament its untimely demise. I'm glad that Stuart won't be put out to pasture though, as he'll soon be working on (I believe) Ultimate Spiderman. Now that, should be interesting.
BTW Rick, I'm logged into the drawingboard site, but I can't see any of Stuart's amazing artwork (or any images beyond avatars)! Any idea why that might be?

Those images are directly linked to Stuart's Flickr account and not to the Drawing Board. It could be that they reached their viewing quota. Try right-click-saving the images.
I'm also looking forward to his work on Ultimate Spider-Man, although I was reading Nextwave as much for Warren Ellis as I was for Immonen. Bendis (is that who's writing it?) hasn't really hooked me since his independent stuff.

If I must say what's my all time favourite comics series, it's very likely Monsieur Jean by Dupuy & Berberian. Last week I got two books, published in English by Drawn & Quarterly. One of them is Get A Life, which collects first 3 albums. (There are 7 out in France by now if I'm not out of date.) Other one I got is Maybe Later, black and white diary-type album about hard times when making third Jean book. This was the book I haven't read before and it turned out to be as good as series! They are smaller than originals, but both are very nice hardback editions.
I also got Bopbot and The Walking Dead collections and trying to read them now... Another book I'd really like to recommend is Blankets by Craig Thompson. His Carnet De Voyage (Travel Journal) about travelling in Europe and Africa is also very interesting read.

I might be a tad unusual in that I follow creators much more often than titles. I buy the occasional pulp and retro-SF material that looks interesting, and a *lot* of art books.
These creators are pretty much must-haves for me:
Mike Kaluta, Charles Vess, Gary Gianni, Mark Schultz, William Stout, Al Williamson, Moebius, P. Craig Russell, Francois Schuiten, Roy Krenkel

What I forgot to mention for my box is:
- the Amazing Spider-Man # 558 by BARRY KITSON (great artist, one of the coolest/nicest
artistpersons I've ever met) He also has
- Secret Invasion: Fanta Four # 1-3 coming out.
I might be a tad unusual in that I follow creators much more often than titles.
Hey, I do that too (and I also enjoy Moebius, Mark Schultz and Al Williamson), and must say it really works for me. Ever since starting to - around 1993 - collecting comics has for me become much more gratifying. Aside from sure-to-be-smashing characters like HB (related) and Shaolin Cowboy I find the quality of the makers as - if not more - important than the players.
WARNING: hateful!? > Why else would I read Spider-Man or 'the Four' nowadays if somebody great wasn't drawing it!

Why else would I read Spider-Man or 'the Four' nowadays if somebody great wasn't drawing it!
Exactly; why do you think Spider-Man raised in popularity for awhile when Todd McFarlane started drawing him?
I don't even think a great artist would get me back to reading Spider-Man. Maybe if Mignola did it, maybe.

Naturally anything in the HB universe (Hellboy, BPRD, Lobstah Johnson)
Plenty of other Dark Horse goodness (Conan, Rex Mundi, several Star Wars titles, Indiana Jones, Solomon Kane )
Marvel: Secret Invasion, New Avengers, Mighty Avengers, Avengers/Invaders, Captain America, Astonishing X-men, Wolverine, Eternals and Immortal Iron Fist (if you haven't checked this out, do yourself a favor and pick up an issue!)
DC: Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, Batman, JLA and JSA
I'm also looking forward to Galveston from Boom Studios.
Has anyone heard of Dead Rider (it was titled Deadlander for issue 1) from Dark Horse? The first two issues were great, but then it fell off the face of the Earth. Does anyone know what the status of this book is?
