Here's what I don't get.
If Batman is a "good" guy then why does he use a bat as a symbol? Bats are representative of evil. They're nocturnal, filthy animals.
Why not an eagle? A golden eagle?
And why is he called the "Dark Knight?" That sounds more like a criminal than a hero. Rather than embrace darkness, Batman should be using sunlight as his symbol.
In short, Batman should abandoned his failed superhero personae and become "Eagleman: the Sunny Knight."

Uhuh.I'll choose to take this seriously.
He uses bats as a symbol identifued with fear.He wants to scare people, criminals to be specific. He uses fear as a tool.
Also, who ever said bats were filthy?
He uses darkness, again to scare people. Also as a cover, since he has no powers.Bullets don't bounce off him because he's just a man,so he stays in darkness to AVOID getting hit.

DP, did you not get the whole point of Batman is to scare the crap out of criminals?

And what about Robin? A robin is hardly a menancing creature and certainly not a bird anyone would consider when fighting crime. However, hummingbirds are fast, clever and only bird that can fly backwards. Since its smaller than an eagle it would make an excellent sidekick.
Hummingbird Boy works much better than Robin.
Eagleman and Hummingbird Boy. It even sounds better than Batman and Robin.
The audience at the comedy club is silent for a minute, trying to figure out if that was meant to be funny, or if there's a punchline still to come.
Finally, someone yells "You're not funny! Get off the stage!"

I think Batman Begins answers any kind of questions as to what Bats does and why he does it. It's all about fear and the control he has over the fearful crooks criminals.

I thought that this was going to be a thread where we could discuss re-imaginings of Batman's look or modus operandi or something.

I think he need to associate himself with the Darkness things, the same way how the Ninja associate themselves with black.
And the Bat also is the way to control fear. Sometimes, this way of thinking help me in the middle of the night: "If human is more evil than the ghost, why I must afraid of the ghost?".

You start that thread and I'll post there.
As for this thread. Batman does the bat thing because he once went to see Ozzy Osbourne in concert and he's been a fan ever since. Good job he never went to see Wham instead.

Yeah it's all about being able to stay in the shadows and engage in a sort of psychological war on crime and be scary to the point that it buys him time to act before whomever he's facing.
That and the costume is a pretty good way of conceiling his identity and maintaining all those practical perks that come with it.
That and it just looks damn cool.

Though if Batman was instead Eagleman and his costume looked something like this it might be really cool.

Where are the tail feathers? You can't have an eagle costume without tail feathers.

I'm sure this was a joke... but still...
why are bats evil? Filthy for sure, but evil? I mean, is a shark evil? Is a lion evil?
Most animals kill to get their food, which shouldn't mean they are evil, they just kill to eat and survive, they don't have supermarkets you know? and even if they did.. where do you think the meat you eat comes from? of the salads you eat? All of what we eat was alive at some point or another... we also kill to eat and survive, and we also kill each other for nothing more than the pleasure of killing, which I think is the one of the definitions of evil.. so, as far as I know, the only evil animal is the humen being. Evil in the sense of inflicting pain and killing purely for the pleasure of it and nothing to do with survival.

If bats aren't evil then why do vampires turn into them?

That's actually a bit of a myth. Vampires actually turn into Cockatoos dressed up as bats.

And Batman is really a man pretending to be bat-like. So, maybe he should be called The Cockatoo?

Batman decided to go dark because of Ozzy Osbourne? I sure am glad he never saw Opeth or some band like that.

Any idea what the effect would have been on Bruce Wayne if he had seen The Wiggles instead of Ozzy Osbourne?

See this is when people take things way over the line.
Why are you dissing the Wiggles?

I cannot even comment on this subject and hold on to any dignity for Batman.
