Ron Marz, still writing. Greg Tocchini, still drawing.

Before I go over the story, I have to say, this is the best the artwork has been so far. It seemed that over the first half of the book Greg Tocchini was still trying to fathom the magnitude of the universe, and trying to get it on paper. The art was sketchy and twisted. In this book, the art is sharper, and Tocchini seems to have found a rhythm.

Kyle is back at Radu's, sipping coffee, and spilling his guts about everything that's happened to him thus far. We flashback to the end of #6, and in fact it was a Monitor standing before Kyle Rayner. The Monitor aludes to others that, along with Kyle, who need further monitoring, and disappears.

Jennie/Jade had left with Radu, a necklace, or a locket, something of the sort, reminding Kyle of when he visited Alan Scott, eyepatch and all, as the new JSA headquarters is being built. They discuss Jade, and there are no ill feelings from Alan towards Kyle.

The book fast forwards, and Effigy attacks Kyle from out of nowhere. The fight doesn't last long. Kyle questions Effigy about his motives, but Effigy has none, he just thought about Kyle, appeared, and attacked.

Kyle and Radu are all caught up, and Kyle leaves. Fast forward, Kyle's chained to an alien totem pole, with an alien girl about to be torn apart by alien lions. And...to be continued.

The last page looked really nice, and could have been good enough for a cover. The story still seems to be shaping up, though I'm not sure that this mini isn't about an event, rather than about examining Kyle's new role as Ion, and his importance to the Guardians, and the universe.

It was decent, but still, very little happened.

The plot thickens as to who is after Kyle . . . muahahahaha!

I thought the issue was great and I'm starting to get used to the pacing. I do agree this had some really wonderful art this issue, the best so far.

I'm really shocked Kyle didn't know who the Monitor was and I'm interested to see how the snaffoo on the planet earlier in the series pans out into the whole scheme of things.

New love interested for Kyle on the horizon? Possibly . . .

I would not mind him hooking up with Donna again. Their relatioship was actually more interesting and made more sense that Jade. If I remember correctly, the only reason the writers forced a break up was so that Bryne could do his "Man of Steel" on Donna in the Wonder Woman book.

That's not too surprising, really. The original Monitor's activities in the DCU took place years before Kyle became involved in superhero activity. Depending on how you look at things, during the first Crisis (i.e. on infinite earths), Kyle either didn't exist or was living on Earth-Eight as an average, non-superhero (and probably just a teenager at that). Kyle's knowledge of the first Crisis would be very sketchy. He might have read some JLA case files on it, heard some anecdotes from veteran heroes who participated in it, and maybe remembered red skies and massive invasion by Shadow Demons a few years before he became Green Lantern, but didn't know much else.

With his near omni-potent powers granted by the guardians one would think he'd have knowledge to go with it, so he should at least know who or what the monitor is.

I wonder if he knows the "Terrible secret" the guardians were talking about over in Green Lantern but he just doesnt realize that he knows.

Maybe not. During his first tenure as Ion, when he really did seem nearly omnipotent, he might have had access to such knowledge. In his current state, Kyle is more or less a Green Lantern Plus, and probably not privy to such information.
