Any list with Oasis, The Black Keys, Bloc Party, Spoon, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Raconteurs, Beck, The White Stripes and Wilco is a pretty good list.
The one thing that would make me hit skip quicker that anything is the Sublime song. It's a shame that radio overplayed Sublime. I used to like them, but now? Skip!

Well, first off, Jonathan has apparently listened to everything so that's hardly fair especially since I don't think my list has the most obvious choices around. Besides, these are just lists of cool stuff we've been listening to lately, why should I do out of my way to make it that obscure. And yeah, I'll probably check out some of his list because I do respect the guy's musical taste even if he is too eclectic for me.
Which is all my way of saying that I haven't heard much from his list.

I agree, I really wasn't trying to antagonize, I just always wonder, how would your list have changed 5, 10 or even 20 years ago ? I mean, of course, the songs themselves will probably change but will the bands ?

Well, twenty years ago, it would be all nursery rhymes. Five years ago, it would be made up of nothing but Beatles and solo Beatles songs and ten years ago, well, I don't know if I would have known enough songs to make a top 25 list. It may seem like I have a narrow musical focus - and yeah, to a large degree I still do - but my tastes truly are constantly expanding. Though for what it's worth, I don't really think The Beatles, the Stones and the Who will ever leave the top of my list and I really hope that I don't ever get tired of them and all those other great acts from 1965ish to 1975ish.
EDIT: Oh and don't worry, I didn't take that as antagonistic at all.

You'll notice I do have The Beach Boys(well... Brian Wilson), Elvis Presley, Brian Setzer doing a song from 1958, and Slade on my list.
I do like to know where my tastes have come from, I just choose not to limit myslef when there are so many new sounds coming out all the time.
I will say, though, I could put a number of the "indie" pop artists I listen to up against the classics any day of the week.

All from this calendar year, 2006:
That's one kickass playlist.
There's a few I don't recognize, but that's a pretty good list. I actually like Lovestink over Gnarls Barkley but is there an actual CD for Lovestink?

Not as far as I know. I only have the vast majority of these songs in mp3 form.

The thing is though that I don't actually limit myself as much as you might think. I do from time to time check out indie acts that are recommended to me but honestly, nothing I've heard comes close to pop's hey day. Most of the indie pop I have heard tends to have nice jangly guitars, pleasant melodies and overall welcoming sounds but the HOOKS simply cannot compare to the immediate catchiness of 60s pop music, never mind its inventiveness. The same pretty much applies to "rock" music as well though the specifics are different. I do concede a few points though, before you bring them up against me.
First and most important, it is entirely possible that I will one day find an indie pop artist who I do want to keep returning to as much as I do the past masters. I just haven't found him or her yet.
Second, I don't say this to belittle any of these indie artists (especially not obviously talented ones like Elliot Smith) but I simply feel that a genre as old and as well tapped as latter twentieth century pop music will start to feel tired after being in existence for fifty-plus years.
Third, I am talking about my own personal experiences here. I am trying to refrain from talking in absolutes ("rock and roll is dead") and I hope I'm being clear that I entirely respect where you're coming from even if I can't say I agree entirely.
Fourth, as I have mentioned a few times, I do like some modern music but I love very little in the way I love most of the stuff that I put on my list.
Fifth, I do think it's worth noting that my musical tastes can be expanded without necessarily looking forward.

Ooh! My turn! These are what I've been listening to this past month--and in no particular order (though the list won't include any KISS or Journey...which always come out on a bad day).
1. Ricky Skaggs - "Honey (Open That Door)": I actually don't play this one that much (which, since I've included it on this list after my opening statement, makes me a liar), but I sing it an awful lot.
2. The Misfits - "Where Eagles Dare" - Often played in the morning on my way to school...it pumps me up to face and battle the young'uns.
3. The Only Ones - "Another Girl, Another Planet" - Love the tricky timing on the intro, and the drumming is extraordinary. Beats Bonham any day of the week (and twice on Sundays).
4. OutKast - "PJ & Rooster" - 'Cause I need to play stuff I like, OK?
5. Magazine - "Shot by Both Sides" - Love the guitar solo (guitar solo? in a punk song?); it's got a nice little Chuck Berry feel to it.
6. The Killers - "When We Were Young" - This one would have fit in perfectly on the Valley Girl soundtrack.
7. The Plimsouls - "A Million Miles Away" - Speaking of Valley Girl....
8. The Psychedelic Furs - "Pretty in Pink" - Speaking of early '80s new age/teen-romance movies....
9. Spoon - "I Turn My Camera On" - Two years ago, on a train to New Orleans (though not actually the City of New Orleans--it was Amtrak), I played the new Spoon CD on my iPod, and this song's rhythm (and the background vocals) seemed to groove along in almost perfect synchronicity with the clacks and clangs of the tracks. I must have repeated this song about twenty times non-stop. If I drive any distance at the right time of day, I'll often try to replicate that feeling by playing this sucker again and again.
10. The Subdudes - "Next to Me" - Speaking of New Orleans, this track is from the Crescent City group's 2006 album that they finished recording almost immediately before Katrina hit. Listening to the album is almost supernaturally prescient at times. On this track, the drummer seems to be channeling the late, great Al Jackson, Jr.
11. Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins - "Rise Up with Fists" - horrible, horrible title (which brings to my mind some twisted sexual imagery); beautiful, beautiful song, with soaring harmonies and an angelic chorus.
12. Ben Harper - "Reason to Mourn" - Very stately, this one, but Harper's voice keeps it earth-bound and personal...and though it's a song of hope, for some reason, it makes me very sad.
13. Plumtree - "Scott Pilgrim" - From glum to glam, with the chorus repeated almost ad nauseum, but the song's so damn infectious and imperfect...and I don't know what in the hell it means.
14. Starlight Mints - "Inside of Me" - If current pop/rock radio was more like it was twenty years ago, this would (oh so deservedly) be a top-ten hit.
15. New Pornographers - "Letter from an Occupant" - The song that's shaking me...has a more perfect pop-rock song been written in the past ten years? I don't think so. Plus, it's got Neko Case singing lead. Speaking of which...
15. Neko Case - "Wayfaring Stranger" - I've heard dozens upon dozens of takes upon this old chestnut, and this one eclipses them all. It gives me chills even as I'm writing it.
That's all for now. It's past midnight, and that last song now's got me scared for the mortality of myself and my family. I'm tired and creeped out. I'll return tomorrow...I hope.

Back again! If these brief synopses grow too long winded for this thread, someone please alert me. Until then, though:
17. Allman Brothers - "Seven Turns" - I first discovered this mystifying little country tune on a forty-five at the local radio station where I used to DJ. I spent many, many late night hours biding time listening to every 45'' they had--and they had thousands. Most of those records--just like most anything you hear on the radio--is either pablum or dreck, and often both. However, every now and then, after spinning hundreds of records, I'd discover something worth spinning again...and this was one of them. The night I found this one, I must have played it about twenty times, pondering who the "somebody" is that was calling "[my] name." Betts was probably just writing about either a lost love or a destined love-to-be, but then again, maybe he meant something else. That first slide-guitar solo seems to suggest that there's more here than meets-the-ear, that that "somebody" may be neither man nor beast...and that shit keeps me up at night.
18. John Anderson - "Wild and Blue" - Nothing so mystical here...except for the magnificence of Anderson's high-lonesome twang, which can sometimes bend notes the same way Eddie Van Halen does his guitar strings.
19. Alejandro Escovedo - "I Was Drunk" - Sample lyric: "I was drunk/I was down/I was wandering 'round my bed/I called out your name." This line, backed by the pendulum-swinging strings, describes mirrors the actuality of being a sentimental inebriate better than any song since...well...I don't know.
20. Buckwheat Zydeco - "Beast of Burden" - Better production, better rhythm playing, and more truly romantic than the Glimmer Twins' original; in fact, it's MUCH better.
21. Cyndi Lauper - "Money Changes Everything" - Another cover song, and this one COMPLETEY changes the meaning of the original, and turns a snide, cynically-barbed song into an honest, complex work of staggering art and beauty...and Lauper does this all by herself (well, herself, the harmonica solo, and the jangling guitar that later chimes in on top of it). And that note she holds at the end? Possibly the most powerful, damning, and seering (considering its implications) in all of rock and roll.
22. R.E.M. - "Me in Honey" - Another lyrically complex song, one even Dylan could admire (at the very least in ther terms of structure). The song's a little cryptic, but it's got Kate Pierson harmonizing and moaning all over and throughout the pulsating rhythm section (which is what R.E.M. misses most these days), and that can make sense out of anything.
23. Red Hot Chili Peppers - "Tearjerker" - copping a line from Paul Westerberg, this ode to Kurt Cobain is sadly beautiful.
24. Sleater-Kinney - "One More Hour" - Another painful break-up song (and all these break-up songs do not denote my state of mind; really, they don't; seriously; shut-up!), and another one told from the point-of-view of the jilter; the lyrics even Hemingway would admire for their brevity, honesty, and weight. Of course, Corin Tucker could just her visceral vibratto to moan and sing nothing but vowel sounds, and this song would still be magnificent.
25. Pixies - "Tame" - Someone once said of Bob Dylan that they'd buy an entire album of him just breathing. I once thought to be a completely hyperbolic statement, but when I hear Black Francis and Kim Deal sustaining a rhythm by doing just that--simply breathing--AND making it sound urgent, sexy, intimate and intimidating--well, I guess I know what that someone meant.
26. Undertones - "Teenage Kicks" - It's all about lead singer Feargal Sharkey's quivering tenor and slight Irish lilt, (which can sound like Southern Twang when he says "by-ad" and "whole-ger"), and the dirty charm which just oozes from this song (and from the sloppy chord-chopping). Question on this one for anyone out there: at the end of the chorus, after he sings "right through the night," what does Sharkey chant? I'm sure what I hear is not what he sings, but I like it better that way, so maybe I don't really want to know the answer. Y'know what I hear? I think he says, "Bare ass!" Makes sense to me.
I think I'll stop there for the night. Bare ass!

It's always sounded like he's saying "All right!" to me.

So I'm not the only person who loves that song.
How could anyone dislike that song?

How could anyone dislike [Carry On, Wayward Son]?
Hypothetically, a person could be turned off by its glossy, overproduced sound, by its pretentiously earnest, quasi-religious lyrics, and by the overlong, wanky solos which don't add any dramatic or musical depth to the song. Hypothetically, that is; I dig it.
