Does anyone know if Christopher Golden's novel Hellboy: The Dragon Pool, will be the last of the Pocket Book novels? I realize we aren't even into 2007 yet and maybe announcements have yet to be made, but I figure we would have seen some mention at least that other Pocket Book novels will follow Dragon Pool. I'm just probing to see what if anything people in the know may be able to share at this point.

Thanks in advance!

Christine, any chance of leaking us any info on what's on the horizon, or is it too soon and you'd then have to kill us ?
;)

Thanks...

Thanks, Christine. These novels are wonderful and, as others have suggested, I'd hate to see the line end.

I'll bet five bucks DH Press Books (http://www.dhpressbooks.com/) picked up the license.

That could be. I'm just looking forward to more Hellboy stories which flesh out the character and accompanying universe, as well as (and I'm not afraid to admit it) more Mignola covers.

Sorry, folks. I was away and just saw this. But Christine obviously has the answer. :)

THE DRAGON POOL is the last book from Pocket. The series WILL continue. More news when we're free to discuss it.

Coming in fall 2008: Hellboy Meets the Creature from the Black Lagoon from DH Press Books. ;)

Seriously, glad to hear the line will continue. I enjoy the novels.

Thanks for stopping by, Chris. I'm excited to read your newest Hellboy universe tale. BTW, any chance we'll get to see the cover for Dragon Pool anytime soon? You probably don't control the release of the novel covers, but maybe you have some idea at least?

Thank you!

Goodies, more novels. I don't care who publichses them, as long as they do continue. They are quite the conversation starter at the laundrymat. I still need to pick up God Machine *bad me!* I'll do that Thurs, when I have my new Borders Reward discount.

I have to admit, part of me finds it a tad disappointing that all the novels have to be "fill-in-the-blanks" stories. While I realize a novel about what's going with Hellboy right now isn't really feasible, I think B.P.R.D. would be ideal for a series of novels.

On the other hand, so far the comic series seem to follow one another pretty closely chronologically, so unless we start getting some gaps in the timeline, maybe this isn't an option. But I still think a BPRD line of novels is a great idea, and would give authors a lot more room to play around.

It would have to be another fill-in-the-blanks, but I'd love some novels of the earlier BPRD, with the Prof still in charge. There's a lot to cover. Heck, I'm still waiting for the answer on how Kate ended up at the BPRD. She was a professor at NYU, then suddenly an outside expert then agent?

But then again, I have a Kate bias ;)

I'd love to see Kate's story too, actually. Hell, I'd love a Kate comic miniseries. I find her more interesting than even, say, Johann or Liz.

What a fantastic idea! Also, with it being just the BPRD and not necessarily having to involve Hellboy (just thinking on the fly here), I wouldn't be as concerned about the author getting the "voice" of Hellboy just right. So few authors seem to be able to capture that unique voice. The recent novels have done a great job, but the short story stuff was either hit and miss for me. Anyway, great idea regarding a possible BPRD novel series! Heck, it would be a sure fire hit with Guy Davis covers. :)

Maybe DH Press books will consider it. I think it's a richer idea, since you have a greater number of characters to choose from--Kate, Liz, Abe, Bruttenholm, Manning, maybe even Johann and Daimio.

I guess the only question is whether it would sell without the Hellboy name anchoring it. I would think that if Pocket Books can get away with Star Trek stuff like New Frontier, DH Press Books can make it with BPRD (and I realize I'm making assumptions here, but until I hear otherwise I'm gonna call DHPB as the publisher of the new novels after Dragon Pool).

A very valid point Poe. Personally, I think Hellboy- A BPRD adventure (or something like that) would get the point across that it's not necessarily Hellboy, but still a related universe adventure novel. There is a more elegant way to word it (leave that to the Marketing folks), but the point is that this could definitely work, and provide novel fodder for years to come.

I've loved Kate since her first appearence. I think its because she does not have any powers. I'm odd that way :)

I agree. I mean, its all about ghosts and demons and magic and good against evil. The supernatural is very "in" now, and it might attract a whole new readership base.

long time reader here, first time to post
I've really been enjoying the Hellboy books since Lost Army came out way back when and look forward to the Dragon Pool - and hopefully many more to come!
The reason I'm posting is I came across the Pocket books spring release catalog today and they had a nice B&W image of the cover. It should look amazing in color!
I've attached it, so I hope that works for everyone.

Welcome, St August! You are very welcome here, as you come bearing gifts ^_^ Love the cover, but then again, I am a dragon freak so I have been looking forward to this book for a long time.

Welcome, St August! And thanks for your housewarming present! (Well, I guess that's not really the correct analogy... but whatever.) It's another nice-looking cover. (I think On Earth As It Is In Hell is still my favorite of the Pocketbooks covers, though.)

If it is Dark Horse Press who's going to be publishing the novels after The Dragon Pool, I hope they go back to the spot illustrations. I realize that Mike is probably way to busy to do this on a regular basis, but maybe Guy Davis could find the time? Not just for BPRD, but for Hellboy, too. He has such a great illustrative style; I'd LOVE to see him do some NC Wyeth type spot illos.

Another I'd love to see do that is (OF COURSE!) GARY GIANNI, but he probably doesn't have the time with his Prince Valiant schedule. Maybe Duncan or Jason or one of the other new artists in the Hellboy world? If a different artist can illustrate HB in the comics, why not in the novels?

Of course if Mike DID have the time, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing him do it again either!!! :D

thanks everyone for the warm welcome

like Brisco, I'd love to see the spot illustrations come back.
I enjoyed the larger format of the Dark Horse books - and I really miss those little skulls at the section breaks!

not sure if I just couldn't find this info amongst all the other Hellboy news - what with Blood and Iron, Garden of Souls, filming of the movie about to begin, etc., etc.
but The Dragon Pool novel came out last week.
I just picked up my copy today at B&N and plan to read it sometime soon. Really enjoyed the other 3 in this current set, and look forward to this one too.
and now that it's published, is there further word on where/when we may ever see another Hellboy prose novel?

Thanks for the heads up, Saint! You are right, with all the other Hellboy goings on this slipped right by me. I will head down and snag a copy soon. I have enjoyed Mr Golden's previous Hellboy tales, as well as most of the other Hellboy written sagas and look forward to what happens next. There is just something about one of these done right that creates a much more intimate version of Hellboy and Gang that no other media can touch.
