I don't want to sound negative, but I don't think there's any way to talk about this issue without being so. It's not that I didn't like the issue. It's just that I was let down.

Mr. Bedard, I've consistently loved what I've read by you. I loved Negation. I love/loved Exiles. The Phantom Annual, though not strictly yours, seems great. I've heard good reviews on your JSA: Classified work. I even enjoyed how you handled the last Marvel Adventures Avengers comic.

I guess it's just that I expect more out of you, but this comic just seemed mediocre. It kept the same feel as the comic has had. That's not the problem. It was the plot holes and the lack of Avengers, I suppose. Maybe it was the dullness of the U-Foes.

In the former, I couldn't understand where the U-Foes costumes came from. Unless Utrecht's (sp?) skin was transformed to have all those symbols on it and Vapor was wearing her garb underneath her astronaut suit, I don't see how they could've looked the way they did. Plus, the U-Foes seemed too skilled with their powers too fast. Also, it felt more like I was reading a Hulk issue instead of an Avengers issue. I know it's nice to do individual character stories. I've enjoyed such moments on some of the animated series based on comics. But it just seemed too Hulk-heavy. We barely had any Avengers. Did Storm even get a speaking line?

In the latter, it's simply that I couldn't get a feel for the characters. They all seemed to have the same personality, with Utrecht seemingly slightly angrier than the rest.

I know this mag appeals more to those who don't analyze what's in front of them. And that's good. Maybe you wrote it this way to appeal to the target audience. It's not unheard of. So maybe I should just grin and bear it and just accept that not everything is going to work because these stories aren't meant to have the sophistication of others? I don't know...

And though you probably had nothing to do with it, I liked the Mini-Marvels item in the back. I've always like those strips and want one every issue.

Yeah, Joe, there's definitely been a learning curve with the Marvel Adventures books. I tried to focus on a different character or two or three characters each issue, rather than spreading it around to every single Avenger each issue. Last time it was Spider-Man, this time the Hulk, Next it'll be Wolvie-Storm-Giant-Girl, and Captain America is the focus of my 4th issue.

But if the story just didn't work, then it just didn't work. I think I might do better if I had another crack at an arc of Adventures books, but who knows? They are definitely different to write, though restrictions usually force one to be more creative. Anyhow, I guess I'm not batting a thousand. Sorry, dude. :o

See, last issue, it was clear you were focusing on Spider-Man, but it felt like an Avengers story because they were involved. In this issue, the Avengers did so little. Maybe it's too hard to explain...

You didn't do a bad job. The story is still better than some of the stuff I read. I just hope you can get used to writing in this different area.
