So guess what I found... Oz cartoons.
Here's the intro to a 90's cartoon where the winged monkeys brought the Wicked Witch of the West back to life, and she stole the Scarecrow's brain, the Tin Man's heart, and the Lion's courage. Sadly, it never had an ending because it was cancelled after the first season. They released all of it except for 2 episodes on DVDs!

Here's two intros to an Oz anime that ended with Dorothy coming back to Kansas after killing the Nome King. But the first ten or so episodes dealt with the Witch. It's on DVD too!

The Anime is much, MUCH better, since it actually follows the story out of the books.

I remember both of these. The American one came out on ABC for that one season. The anime, I'd watch early mornings on HBO. It was the better of the two.

Her slippers were silver not ruby!!!! Fricken Hollywood.
Heh...sorry about that. :D
I remember watching the Anime version all the time, I think they did most of the story...Jack Pumpkinhead, Ozma and all that. It was fun stuff.

The one with the ruby slippers is clearly based on the MGM version of the film. The earlier anime version was (I think) a Murukami and Wolf production that was shot in Japan; it's interesting to compare the American style designs with Japanese anime sensibilities. There was an hour long Oz special back in the 1960s but I can't remember who produced it.

^ That was Return to Oz (not the 1984 movie), where the Wicked Witch of the West wasn't melted and burned the Scarecrow's diploma, melted the Tin Man's heart, and rusted the Lion's medal of courage and took over the Emerald City.
She turned to stone when she tried to get the slippers from Dorothy, and the reason the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Lion didn't turn to stone when handling them (they had to carry them)...was because they had brains, a heart, and courage.
*sniffs at lovely ending*

That was my first thought, too. Funny how that's the instinctive connection my brain makes when I see/hear the word OZ now....

I vaguely remember a cartoon in the 70s with the voice of Liza Minelli as Dorothy(like mother like daugther, or something). Took a few characters from other Oz books, such as the witch Mombi, Pumpkinhead and the Saw Horse. Not terrible, but not great either.

^ That's Journey Back to Oz, a movie! It has Mombi trying to take over Oz with an army of killer green elephants.

My dad told me about the Rankin/Bass cartoons and said they looked like they were drawn by a 3-year old. He also didn't like them because his nickname at school was 'Rusty the Tin Can', and they gpot it from the cartoons cause the Tin Man's name in the cartoon was Rusty.

I remember that old anime. I LOVED it. It's what got me into the Oz books (the movie REALLY REALLY had turned me off prior to watching the cartoon)
