Here's a little story about Nick that shows what a great guy he is; it took place at the San Diego Comic-Con International a few years ago.

Early one morning, about an hour before the exhibit hall had opened to the public, my friend Stan (USAGI YOJIMBO) Sakai and I were talking and comparing notes. We were both kinda bleary-eyed and trying to wake up before the crowds swept through the aisles, when we saw a figure bustling toward us -- it was Nick Cardy! Now, both Stan and I had met Nick -- he and I had shared the podium for a panel discussion hyping TwoMorrows' then-recent STREETWISE anthology -- but neither of us really knew Nick very well, although we both admired him greatly. Any way, Nick chugged up to us, much more alert than either of us were, his face beaming with friendliness. "Hi, guys", Nick enthused, "what's going on? Wanna talk shop about cartooning?" And talk we did!

I don't even recall any of the particulars of our conversation, but Stan and I were both mighty impressed that a man who's nearly twice our ages had more enthusiasm for our mutual business than most of the cartoonists we knew. And all it took for Nick to consider us his friends was that we all shared the same occupation, which he obviously loves.

What a great, talented man. Long live Nicholas Viscardi!
