Maybe Carey will make you change your mind.
After all, the only way to grow to like characters is to read stories they're in.
Although of course, you could grow to dislike her even more.....

Martinique was much, much cooler and prettier. Anyway, the "lady" joke wouldn't work with Martinique, because she's called "Mastermind". So I already aprove Carey's choice, because that was an awesome intro!!

If I recall correctly, her picture appeared on the Wall Screen in New Avengers of the powers that The Collective was in posession of. If it wasn't there, it may have been in the 198 Handbook. Because I believe I recall it saying that her sister Martinque was depowered. I'll have to check.

Yeah, he does. Apocalypse took it away from him and gave it back to Wolverine in Wolverine #145, but later Weapon X gave Creed adamantium again. And I think Mike Carey even said on his website that as far as he knew Creed still had it.
Which is why I don't think they were giving him the Cure. Plus, isn't he scheduled to fight Wolverine soon in Wolverine #50? That will be a really short fight if he no longer has his healing factor and claws.

But they're supposed to be leaving the mansion and I don't think Emma's comming with them. Of course, Cable is with them for now and he's got those cybernetic telepathic powers (still not sure exactly how that's supposed to work) so he can serve as the team telepath.
However, I agree that she probably won't stay for more than 10 issues. 10 issues would be alot though.

Darwin is Ed Brubaker's character, and I doubt he's getting rid of him as long as he's on Uncanny X-Men. And Colossus is Whedon's character, and noone is going to take him away while Whedon's still on the books.

Even with the occasional cameo role, like with what Carey's been doing so far is good enough for me.

Lady Mastermind uses her telepathy & mutant illusions together to make her powers all the more formidable. Lady Mastermind is far more dangerous & deadly since she can make anyone's desire or fear seem real with her illusions. She's not just a telepath.
Lady Mastermind's mutant power is the exact same thing Mastermind used artificially--with the White Queen's "mindtap mechanism--to telepathically tap into Phoenix's mind to bring her dark side to the surface as the Hellfire Club's Black Queen. Regan Wyngarde just has this ability naturally.

my only gripe is the adamantium chains bit. adamantium is pretty hard to come by, or at least it has been. i doubt the x-men would have enough adamantium lying around to make a set of chains let alone have any adamantium whatsoever. but, minor quibble.

Anyway, X-Men #192 looks good, Iceman or not. Though I'd prefer some Iceman-Mystique interaction too!
Where did Mastermind II first appear? I remember Reagan showed up in X-treme X-Men, but I never saw Martinique, I only heard about it being a mistake of creating two different female masterminds at about the same time.
And I'm glad Mike chose Reagan over Martinique, If only because her name is too similar to Mystique's. Martinique/Mystique. That would be annoying.

I believe Martinique Jason, Mastermind II, first appears in Gambit & Wolverine: Victims limited series. She has the exact same powers as the original Mastermind.
Lady Mastermind can telepathically tap into someone's mind & manipulate him or her to be her puppet using her illusions.

Guess why I'm here guys. Yup, it's time for "Let's spoil the holy bejeezus out of everyone!" X-MEN; ENGAGE! Haha corny, but it's in there. :p
For the people who are digging her already from only one line, you're going to LOVE Lady Mastermind. She's a bit like Emma yes, only also homocidal. She tells Hank something along the lines of "I've only been awake for five minutes, and I've already got someone on my hitlist. Where is she?" (Serafina) There's also a bit of heavy mock flirting between her and Hank.
I can't get the first page to load fully. But did Beast just give Creed the Cure?
i'm interested to see how rogue thinks the shot will be able to control sabretooth. stuff like that hasn't really worked out in the past.
Nope, not the cure. He injected Sabey with the microscopic sentinels from Morrison's run, on Rogue's orders. Either Cable or Karima will activate them if Creed steps out of line. Scotty boy is furious at Rogue for taking Creed out of the mansion's custody, and for injecting something potentially lethal into him, even going as far as calling him a "mutant WMD". And of course Rogue, being Rogue just doesn't give a hoot. Followed by a really nice shot of Rogue and her team.
Where's Iceman dammit?!?
Don't worry, Bobby'll be there, there's a little panel of him looking sorry for Mystique right after Rogue majorly bites her head off. But you might be a tad bit concerned when Fuego completely vaporizes him. Or not, he is an omega mutant afterall. :p And apparently he watches reruns of Friends in his spare time.
And can Mike Carey write New X-Men too? I'm very impressionable, if you haven't noticed. You might not feel the same by the end of the issue, since the first item on "The Children's" list of "Let's kill everyone and take the world for ourselves" is "Let's get rid of the New X-men." But I'm sure they'll be fine.

Martinique first appeared in Victims. Then she was a member of Mystique's Brotherood of Mutants during Dream's End. Finally she was Mystique's partner during Casey's X-Corps arc. I think that was the last time we saw her.
Regan only appeared in that X-Treme X-Men arc and now in Carey's run.
Thanks for answering my question, guys! I'll try to look inoto some of those issues. I'm curious about her now.

Wolverine alone, has raided the old and new Weapon X facility enough times to have gathered a number of sets of adamantium chains over the years.
i can't recall wolverine ever bringing adamantium to the institute. any citations?
adamantium is rare and expensive, usually harvested from one source to another. not something you'd make a set of chains out of.

My post was just one easy way to explain the chains without people crying foul about never seeing adamantium chains being forged at the X-mansion. You have never seen an X-Men costume being sewn together at the X-Mansion in a comic book as well, and yet all of the X-Men wear costumes

That page with Mystique and Cable is great! :D
You know, it actually was pretty good, despite the fact that it makes use of my least favorite thing in all of X-men lore (a.k.a., time travel). Carey's dialogue is believable here, and I like the way Cable references his future timeline in a somewhat dismissive fashion. It's as if he's telling Mystique, "don't worry about it so much because what we do now might change all that."
It also provides sufficient motivation for Mystique to change her ways (at least a little bit). After all, how'd you like to know that your name is synonymous with "traitor" or "Judas" some 2 millenia into the future?

i understood the point, which is why i originally mentioned the chains being a minor quibble.
sure, it has nothing to do with the story and no significant relevance other than "adamantium is strong, creed broke the chains; creed is strong".

LOVED the Cable/Mystique page!
A traitor to whom, indeed. To the X-Men or to the mutant supremecists. Very interesting insight and a great way to begin interaction between the two.

i understood the point, which is why i originally mentioned the chains being a minor quibble.
sure, it has nothing to do with the story and no significant relevance other than "adamantium is strong, creed broke the chains; creed is strong".

Well you did say "only gripe" in your original quoted post, so I thought you were complaining about it. Adamantium is rare indeed, but the Weapon X program still has a bunch of what exists of it. And Wolverine has had plenty of "off page" chances to grab loads of the Weapon X Program's stash.

He didn't break the chains, though. He pulled the chains out of the wall. Pieces of the wall was still stuck to them.

adamantium is rare and expensive, usually harvested from one source to another. not something you'd make a set of chains out of.
Adamantium hasn't been all that rare for quite some time now in the MU. It started off that way, sure, but nowadays it seems everyone's got adamantium skeletons, skin, swords, chains, or whatnot.
The stuff has been popping up all over for a long time.
(Maybe that's the other genie JQ wants to put back in the bottle. :))

Umm, wow is a word that describes these previews. Between the first few pages and that page with Cable and Mystique, im justflipping out right now. Its good to know Mystique is still a bit curious. At least she cares about something. As the the good Profexxor stated: Where the hell is Bobby. Haha kidding, im sure he will turn up when his time has come. im really pumped for this. Good to see Blachelo is back. Hmm, and I thought Karima was hot! Whats up Lady M? How you doin?:D

Yeah, I have to say, Mike Carey is definitely delivering the goods. At first this book looked like it was going to be my least favorite of the three X-men titles just because I didn't like many of the cast members, but Mike has definitely won me over. He has struck a great balance of character beats and all-out action throughout this run, and each issue makes you feel like you definitely got your money's worth (which is something that most comics these days don't do for me, unfortunately).
These days I like this book almost as much as I like Astonishing, and the only reason that Astonishing edges it out is because it has Wolverine in it. So that's a huge compliment to Carey's writing IMO.

I loved Wolverine's line to Serafina : "These yours?"
It cracked me up, for some reason. Classic Logan.

Well, that's true, Logan actually has been in this book. But for some reason I'd rather he not be. I really want to see what Mike can do with just his cast, so I'm looking forward to this team leaving the mansion (hopefully for Providence). Like I said, he's really starting to win me over on this crazy team he's put together, and once they're out of the mansion and on their own I think they'll be that much more interesting. Almost more like a modern-day version of X-Force or something.
I wonder if Cable or Cannonball will take over as leader for awhile while Rogue is off in India on her own?

I like how he has members from other teams(minus the Uncanny crew, cause like, they're off in space right now), it shows that they all live under the same roof.

True. It's nice that he's shown that, but I'm still looking forward to them not living under the same roof in the near future so that they can really develop as a team on their own without all of the guest-stars.
But I agree, while they are living under the same roof it makes sense for Carey to show that.

Yeah, Cable is supposed to have fighting abilities on par with Wolverine's, so let's see him actually use them for a change as opposed to just taking people out with his guns and his forcefield. Perhaps someone like Serafina will neutralize his tech and he'll be forced to fight hand-to-hand?

Milligan and Claremont both did a pretty good job of acknowledging the wider teams while spotlighting their own casts, as have both NXM writing duos... really it's only Whedon who likes to write with blinders on.

Well really I was just saying it was a good thing that Carey does include the other X-teams in his book. bru has his team in space so I can see why he has written what he has. But for Whedon's team...I dont really know. The Astonishing team has been in the mansion for like 2/3 of thier stories, and yet no other X-men have really been shown. I dont know why he writes like that, im sure theres a reason. Whedon doesnt HAVE TO include the others, but it would be cool.

I've always been bewildered about that too. It's as if no one else lives there but his team. Or everyone is coincidentally on a mission, except for his team.

Think about it, though. The X-men teams change rosters and costumes so often, how could Whedon and Cassaday possibly put the other groups in Astonishing when they can't keep a regular schedule?
It would look pretty odd to have Polaris, for example, strolling through the mansion in her purple outfit when she's currently in outer space wearing something totally different.
So IMO it's a good idea on Marvel's part to try and keep Astonishing as self-contained as possible. It also makes it so that you don't have to buy any of the other X-books if you don't want to, and thus don't even have to acknowledge certain characters' existences (which can be quite nice if you're not a fan of, say, time-traveling X-characters). ;)

Granted... though I'd say this is a better argument for setting Whedon's X-projects outside continuity all together. The line driving, lead Xbook should be firmly entrenched in continuty, not avoiding it... if Whedon's not up to to the task (both in keeping a wider shared universe and a regular schedule), he shouldn't be writing Astonishing. Acknowledging nothing but his own cast just doesn't make logical sense in the context of Astonishing's setup, there's no real legitimate excuse for it.

Well, there really shouldn't even be an Astonishing book, but Marvel felt it was better to create a new book for Joss and John rather than have them follow Grant Morrison on (New) X-men.
Personally I'd have liked to see them do Ultimate X-men instead, just because then they wouldn't have to worry about continuity at all between the X-books because there's only one in that universe.

I did not know that Marvel created Astonighing specifiaclly for Whedon, well thats news to me. But maybe your right. I mean Whedon is leaving at # 12 anyway, so maybe they should have started on something else. Though I'm not knockin Astonishing. I love that book, but I do wish he could have stayed on longer.

then Whedon's first arc would've been about Ultimate Kitty finding Ultimate Colossus... is straight. which would lead to a whole lot of fuss over Joss being homophobic or nonsense like that.

A few glaring questions I would like to have answered next ish:
1. So are Northstar and Aurora just lying dead somewhere on the mansion floor? Or are they alive but imprisoned? Perhaps I missed this but it seemed pretty unclear.
2. Why do the Children want the X-men/Spoilers:New X-menDead? So they can take over the world?
3. WTF is up with the zombie outside the mansion?

Aurora and Northstar are alive. Rogue and her team will travel to the SHIELD Helicarrier in the upcoming annual(this January) in an attempt to get them back in their right minds.
X-MEN ANNUAL #1
Written by MIKE CAREY
Pencils and Cover by MARK BROOKS
Rogue and her team have unfinished business on board the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier - business that concerns the twins, Northstar and Aurora, and a last-ditch attempt to restore them to their right minds. But a powerful enemy from the X-Men's past has a different agenda - and his plans to hijack the Helicarrier for his own uses lead to a terrible revelation.

Well, agreed on both counts. Hopefully whoever they have lined up to follow Joss is a bit more engaging with the shared X-verse and a bit more committed to releasing the thing on a acceptable schedule.
Taken on it's own Astonishing's a fantastic book... but it's fundamental problems with scale and continuity almost ruin it for me. :/

I think they should just cancel it, personally, and fold those characters into the other X-books (or non-X-books, in the case of Wolverine and possibly Beast, who could both be fulltime Avengers).

I'd prefer that too really. 2 seperate X-Men teams is already pushing it, 3 is just over the top.
Ideally, I'd like a setup similar to Morrison/Casey, with one book centering on the institute and the other centering on the field strike force. Maybe keep Astonishing as the former and rebrand Uncanny as the latter (kill adjectiveless, but let Carey write the other books instead!).
