There have been several lost battles over the years, but which ones stick out in your mind as being the worst & why?
The ones that come to my mind are:
1. Spidey's loss to Doc Ock in AMS# 3 which almost made Peter give up the tights.
2. Spidey's defeat at the hands of Kraven where he ended up buried alive!
3. Spidey's humiliation at the hands of Electro, where his was forced to beg for his life in AMS# 424
4. Spidey's loss to The Black Tarantula in AMS# 436 where Spidey technically wins because the Tarantula walks away and Spidey is too broken to go after him.
5. And Lastly Spidey's Mutilation and Murder In "The Other" story arc.
What lost battles stuck with you as Spidey's worst?

Every battle he has had with Morlun has probably been some of the worst ass beatings he has had. Peter even said so himself. I can't remember really, anything else other than Morlun...of course, that may just be because it's in recent memory.

Just to get a variety of answers, you almost have to discount the last Morlun fight. How can anyone come up with a worse beating than being beaten to death?

Yeah Sean's right. I mean he kind of, ya know, died.

yeah, that was bad, but really it lacked the emmotional strenght it needed. It seemed more like a getting beat down for the sake of getting beat down kinda thing, so I wouldn't rank it near the top.
The return of the Sinister 6 had a good one. Even left him in a cast for a few issues and near dead more than once.

Harry kicked his ass emotionally from beyond the grave, with the whole robot parents thing. I mean, that part was stupid, but the ending was chilling. Peter goes into the Chameleon's computer files and sees a message addressed to him, and the Green Goblin's face appears on a dozen computer screens gloating: "Gotcha. Gotcha. Gotcha."

Yeah, Morlun's last battle takes the cake without a doubt, but yeah, there are a lot of notable ones. Off the top of my head, I'd agree with Kraven's Last Hunt, which wasn't really as much a viscious beating as it was a crushing defeat. I mean, he was for all intents and purposes, 'dead' and buried for two weeks.
I also remember an Amazing Spider-Man comic from the late 80s / early 90s where he was pretty visciously blasted by Dr. Doom; left him with a shreaded costume and a few broken ribs if I'm not mistaken.
Then there was the Torment storyline wherein he was really put through the ringer both physically and psychologically.
And how's about his first battle with Fusion? I suppose technically he didn't really get his neck broken, but all in all, I'd consider it a pretty sound defeat.

Yeah, I was gonna mention that one. Amazing #350, Doctor Doom just tears Spidey apart with the barest of efforts. Peter had no hope of victory; he had to make a deal with Doom and plead to his vanity just to survive.
It was actually one of my earliest exposures to Doom, and it left an impression. :)

I think next to the battle in The Other, we have the previous Morlun fight. I mean look how bad he was at the end of that, with all the bandaging and scraps for a costume. But others that have been mentioned might qualify as well.

God, I loved that ending. It made the whole 'robot parents' thing palatable and was Harry's big time Spidey-villain coup de grace, like his dad's was with Gwen. I'd go with that and Kraven's Last Hunt for worst psychogical damage infliction. Hard to come up with a meaningful "worst" physical (beyond the gratuitous beating-to-death from Morlun in the Other), since Spidey getting physically trashed isn't exactly a rare occurrence (and he usually patches himself up and then gives some back in round two). But for brutal defeats/beatings that he never avenged, I've got to go with Von Doom in ASM #350 and Kulan Gath, who crucified Spidey in Uncanny X-Men #191. Plus I don't think Pete ever got a substantial rematch with Black Tarantula, either.

There was one where Norman had been druging Peter for weeks making Peter become the Green Goblin and had Peter unknowingly attacking his own Friends. Then Norman tried to finish him off by brain washing into willing becoming the Goblin for good. It ended with the Goblin getting away and telling Peter that they both know that there battle can only end with one of their death.

It was then completed in Paul Jenkin's Peter Parker: Spider-Man.

Since most of the best answers are already there, I'm going to throw one out which wasn't his WORST, but was pretty bad.
In MK 11 he took quite a beating. The Sinister Twelve swampoed him and were all over him, kicking his ass. He would've been dead with ease until the Avengers and FF arrived.

One slightly worse than that would probably when he was thrust into the Raft.

McFarlane's artistry is probably his worst beating... Teraxia, the chick Thanos created in Infinity Gauntlet, beating him to death with a rock is a close second.

Wow have to agree with that one.... but I think that we are in the minority.
Someone mentioned the Juggernaut battle here and then someone counter with it not being one of the worst beatings. I understand that everyone has their opinions but I'd like to throw a little food for thought into this one.... Try not to make your judgment based upon the artistry (I know that's tuff) because when you compare older books to the modern ones you have to take into account that a strict CCA did not allow the artists of the older books to depict scenes as graphically as they can today. Instead try and base your ideas on the story, overall feel of the book and the lasting repercussions that the battle had.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this (not going read all the comments) but it seems to me that the beating in the first few issues of MKSM was pretty brutal. It is one of the few times I can recall Peter going to the hospital like that. Couldn't stand it (really why was he beat so bad? I mean how many times has he taken Electro? Going to the hospital and being unmasked? No one took a picture? Find that hard to believe?), but it still seemed to be pretty bad.
Also what about the time he was beaten to death by Morlun? Seemed pretty bad too.
I think over the years the beatings have gotten worse. In both senses, they are written worse and they are too extreme. I liked when Kraven buried Peter, that was so dark and twisted. That was more then a physical beating. Yea there's my vote, when Kraven buried Peter under ground.

Yeah but he didn't "act" that broken up either. That's what I would base it on. He took that beating pretty well and still kept his senses about him. It was ENTIRELY a one sided fight though, and one of my favorite Juggernaut appearances.
The first one that came to my mind was #350 with Doom. Another nearly one sided fight that left Spiderman with a concussion and multple broken or Bruised bones, and little to no costume left. Best Doom showing in years.

Boy, I remembered that issue (can't tell the number because its the Singapore edition) called "Coming Out" where Spidey battled Morlun. He was pretty beat up between the previous issue "Meltdown" and this one (his costume was torn up two times, one in Meltdown and another time in Coming Out).

The four issue battle with the Lizard in Torment (Spider-man #1-5 by Todd Mcfarlane) is right up there.
But you can't top Amazing Spider-MAn #229-230 "Nothing Can Stop the Juggernaut" in this category.

IIRC he lost both times he fought Stilt Man.
Spider-Man vs the Burglar in Amazing Fantasy 15.
This was his biggest "emotional beating" anyway.
Actual physical beating though - Hard to say. Comics these days are a lot more graphic. I mean in the past I doubt we would've seen him get his eye ripped out.
