So I am going through a phase of finally getting around to seeing comic book inspired movies.
I finally managed to catch the straight to video ( in this country ) epic Man Thing.
I have to say I liked it.
For what it was it was perfectly decent stuff, ok, so there is some bad, the lead actor is almost completely uncharismatic in the role, the Australian locations look absolutely nothing like America, the lead actresses Ausie accent comes out to play almost constantly and the characters are one dimensional.
....However .........
It is much better than the usual straight to video fare and is structured really well, we know all the characters before they get into the Man Thing action, they arent interesting characters, but we do know who they are.
Which brings me to the real star...
The Man Thing is awesome, I would put the effects up there with Lord of The Rings and The Hulk, which sounds ludicrous, but its true, Man Thing is beautifully done and old Ted Sallis is a right nasty piece of work in this one.
Sadly however "those who know fear" do not "Burn at the Man Thing's touch" somewhere along the process he lost his key superpower, sad.
But he is still the gaurdian of the Nexus of all realities, there are also references to Berger and Ploog dotted through the film.
I wasnt expecting much, I didnt get much, but my soft spot for Swamp Monster movies made this just real entertaining fluff, good trash, actually one of the better recent comic movies as it could have easily been a Man Thing comic.
Well shot, well directed, no shaky cam, big green monster and gratuitous sex and violence, an 80s horror movie tribute with no sense of post modernism whatsoever.
Go seek it out, it is worth a watch, if only for the gorgeous creature, the filmic equivalent of nachos.
