Well in Joe Friday's yesterday, the solicits for January showed X-men annual #1. I was surprised there wasn't a thread up about it already. Well anyay here is the solicit for it. Just wondering what everyone thought.
X-MEN ANNUAL #1
Written by MIKE CAREY
Pencils and Cover by MARK BROOKS
Rogue and her team have unfinished business on board the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier - business that concerns the twins, Northstar and Aurora, and a last-ditch attempt to restore them to their right minds. But a powerful enemy from the X-Men's past has a different agenda - and his plans to hijack the Helicarrier for his own uses lead to a terrible revelation.

Mr. Sinister.

Yeah I though it may have been him, I really couldn't think of anyone esle, because obviously it wouldn't be Magneto, or Apocalypse. Plus they're probably continuing that story that's been going on for a little while with Sinister, Gambit, Sunfire and whoever else. One more thing I just thought of, this may be like the start of the story that eventually will bring back Gambit, because I'm pretty sure Mike Carey said he would eventually bring back Gambit. Well I don't want to go on forever, but if this has to do with Mr.Sinister, then Gambit would eventually follow.

THats what I'm hoping for. This would be the best oppertunity to resolve the fallout of that BoA nonsense and start fixing Gambit. If the cover is an indication of what happens inside, I'd guess it could be what shocks him out of the funk he's been in since becoming a Horseman.
I don't like Mark Brooks' art! Le sigh. That cover isn't bad, but it's the coloring that saves it I think. I just don't think his figure work is that strong. I'd much rather have 48 pages of Bachalo...if it were possible.

I'm getting this just for Mark Brook's art! I hope there's a lot of beautiful Rogue in it. Oh, and here's hoping this is the issue where she loses Sunfire's powers, and maybe gets back her Ms. Marvel powers.:D

I was really amazed by this news, and im damn sure glad to get the Annuals back, especially for X-men. I bet everyone is thinking the same about it, speculation on part of Sinister, etc. Thats what I first thought. I hope he is in it.
That cover was freakin brilliant. Its definately hot as hell, the more Mystique the better. And im starting to like Rogue better too. Cant wait:D

I am also hoping for Mr. Sinister. He needs to be brought back as a powerful and evil guy again. He's my 5th husband in an alternate world. That cover is my screen saver!!!
Whatever...
The cover looks gorgeous! I am definitely looking forward to this one! :D

Sounds cool. I usually like the traditional purpose of annuals, like telling a separate story that can fit in the annual instead of continuing the story (or at least some of the plots) in the annual, but it still sounds good anyway.

Lucifer. It's misdirection marketing at its finest. Think about it: the original X-Men fought Lucifer, the alien who busted Xavier's legs. And Mike Carey wrote Lucifer, the First of the Fallen, the Lightbringer, the Morningstar.
Mr. Sinister... pffft. Just you wait and see. First ever Marvel/Vertigo crossover. Won't you all feel stupid then.

I suppose it would be silly to ask why we need another Number 1? I mean, I already have two X-men Annual 1's, one from 1968 and the other from 1991, and I didn't buy the new Uncanny Annual #1. Is there some law at Marvel against sticking with the original numbering system?

Yes, I agree an annual should be a seperate story. However I will buy it anyway.

I'm really enjoying Carey's run so far, and I've even begun warming up to his cast (which I was not a fan of initially). It's nice to see writers trying to make superstars out of some characters who have really been relegated to support status in the past.
Both he and Brubaker have sold me on the concept of the X-men being interesting even without Wolverine on the team, which coming from me is a huge compliment.
So it goes without saying that I'll be buying this Annual when it comes out.

This is true, but aren't Warpath and Sabretooth kind of Wolverine stand-ins? I mean, they aren't completely the same, but they almost fill the same archetype. Eh, I'm just playing devil's advocate. I agree, it's refreshing not to have Wolverine on each team.
That's an awesome cover! Mark Brooks draws a beautiful Rogue. I'd love to see him take over as the permanent X-men artist (assuming his interior art is as good as his cover work).

I wouldn't say Warpath is a stand in, unlike Sabretooth. I'd more compare James to his brother, than anyone. Honestly, we could do w/o Sabretooth on that team. It kinda makes more sense if Wolverine was on this team instead of the Astonishing team, but it's the kewl group, so of course they're going to get the most popular mutant.

*Jaw drops*...Wow...that's cover's just...wow.
Why can't we have Mark Brooks as the regular artist? I mean, I do like Bachalo, but...Mark's an art God! His work's absolutely beautiful (look at this cover for example) and as for as I've heard, he doesn't have anything else coming up. If not as the permanent artist...then perhaps as the filler artist for Bachalo!
Besides, I despised Henry's art on the filler. It just didn't match the story...and he made Rogue look fugly too! :p

I agree, it's refreshing not to have Wolverine on each team.Other than the fact that they both like fighting and occasionally let their anger/rage control them, I don't see much in common between Warpath and Wolverine. I do, however, hear a lot of fans saying that Warpath is the "New Wolverine", despite the character having been around since 1984 and for the most part being written very well and distinct ever since (I haven't been reading Brubaker's Uncanny X-Men, so I wouldn't know if I think he's being written well there, but otherwise...).

Looking forward to this issue. Can't wait for the Rogue/Mystique interaction. They haven't said too much to each other so far since they've been on the same team.
Also, does anyone think they make be making Northstar and Aurora "better" just in time for one or both of them to show up in Omega Flight?

i agree it's the coloring that saves that cover. Mark Brooks is too cartoony in a negative way, I simply can't take any of his adults characters seriously, they look like overgrown 10-year olds...
rwsmith
10-16-2006, 09:02 AM
I wouldn't mind seeing Logan and Warpath on the same team, actually. I'm sure there would end up being a friendly (or perhaps not so friendly) rivalry between them.
Maybe if they don't do another season of Astonishing and fold the cast into the other two books this could be a possibility. Mike Carey has already said that he'd love to get his hands on Cyclops, Emma and Beast if possible, and so Brubaker could take Kitty, Colossus and Wolverine.

Mark:
I think it looks great, and it's really left me wondering why they haven't offered you Ultimate X-men yet? With Joe Mad (and then Ed McGuinness) taking over the Ultimates, and Pascual Ferry on Ultimate FF, I think your more cartoony style would fit perfectly with the overall "tone" that the Ultimate Universe seems to be going for now. If not Ultimate X-men, then Ultimate Spider-man, but you really ought to be working on one of those books IMO. Your style is very eye-catching and dynamic to the point that the casual reader would definitely be more prone to pick up Ultimate X-men if you were working on it. The artists on that book right now are just way too bland IMO.

The first thing I thought was Sinister, but thats just because I'm a Gambit fan and that would be very close to when Carey said he was going to use him this could be the perfect way to set up his return.

I dont know about Sunfire. Carey once said that he had no plans for Sunfire, but who knows things might have change since then.

It'd be pretty lame and unfair if you brought Sinister and Gambit in, but not Sunfire. Where else would he be anyways? Carey also said we weren't going to see Northstar and Aurora again after his first arc, but yet here they are.

I pulled this off Carey's site:

I'm daring to hope Gambit might show up.

That's an interesting thought. Since they're going to be on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, I suppose the Avengers (including Ms. Marvel) could be called in to help out. And Rogue's going to be in an upcomming Ms. Marvel issue.
