Good news today. As has been rumored for the past few months, Steve Gerber will be writing a new ongoing Dr. Fate series next year. There will also be a series of launch one shots by Gerber with Peter Snjeberg, Tad Williams and Phil Winslade, and Bill Willingham with Shaun McManus. I'm hoping Snjeberg will be the artist for the ongoing, but Winslade would also be an excellent choice, seeing that they've worked together before on Nevada and Howard the Duck. (I like McManus as well, but he's had his shot on Dr. Fate.)

That's really great news. Gerber is an excellent writer, and Fate is one of my absolute favourite characters. I'd love to see Snjeberg as regular artist on the ongoing.
I don't know much about Dr. Fate, but I'll probably have to check this out because of Gerber.

Can't wait. I love Gerber's surreal, crazy stories, especially his Man-Thing and Howard the Duck. This book should be awesome if they do it right (which all depends on who's becoming Fate).

Snejberg as artist ? He's the one who drew the secret files for the sentinels of magic if i'm not wrong.

Gerber and Snejbjerg would be pretty much a dream line-up for Dr Fate

Great news. Here's hoping Steve can continue to have an ongoing series for a long, long time.

I've been jonesing for a Gerber fix ever since HARD TIME wrapped up, so I'll be picking this up. Dr. Fate seems like a bit of a strange fit for him, though.

Steve Gerber is the only writer in mainstream comics who's work is an automatic buy for me. So I'll probably be getting this. :)

Hmmmmm, Steve Gerber on Dr. Fate.
This might just work. Count me as another who may try out this one.

So is Elongated Man gonna be Fate?

I doubt it. I don't think they'd do something so stupid as to destroy two long-lasting characters when they could improve upon them both. I'd like to see Ralph go back to just being a detective and the Helmet of Fate find a brand-new Lord of Order to wear it.

Considering how DC thought putting Hal in the spectre hood was a good idea at that time , i wouldn't put it past them to have Ralph Dibny become the new elongated dr. fate. ;)

Hopefully they've learned from that debacle. The only point in keeping Hal around as The Spectre was to keep him from completely disappearing from the DCU, because they knew full well that they'd be bringing him back, eventually. Ralph can do without being a magician, and the Helmet can find a better replacement for Dr. Fate.

I just recently read the entire "Hard Time" series (v1 and v2) and I really enjoyed it.
However, thats the only Gerber work I've actually been exposed to. I'm wondering if his writing style is going to translate well into something as cosmically strange and grand as Dr. Fate.
Here's hopin'!

Gerber did a couple interesting Mr. Miracle stories in the late 1970's.
Vaguely remember them, but they were weird.......and I think could translate into interesting Dr. Fate stories...

Steve Gerber wrote many "cosmic" stories in Man-Thing since his swamp is the source for the nexus of all realities. Steve Gerber also wrote Marvel Comics The Defenders & Howard the Duck in the early 70's.
Gerber's most well known Marvel characters are Howard the Duck, Hellcow (a vampire cow), & the Headmen (villains who have either replaced their heads or put their heads on different bodies).

Hellcow? Was she ever used after that one HTD story?

Not as far as I know. But c'mon! How often do you get to name-check the Hellcow. :)

I just hope they let Gerber have maximum creative freedom on this - well, at least the max possible with a well-established character. I was hoping for the Phantom Stranger when the rumours first began, but Dr Fate seems like a concept that could mesh well with Gerber's particular style and talents. It could end up being something pretty special if he's allowed to go his own way with it.

I'm looking forward to a new ongoing series written by Gerber--Dr. Fate, in my opinion, has been mishandled since his first (and only) series ended in the early 90s.

I've got high hopes for this, good to see Gerber at it again. Now if only Gene Colan could do the art, we'd be all set. :D

I'm pleased to see that Steve Gerber is being handed a new ongoing series but less pleased that there is a pathetic attempt at artifically making it an vent first with the Helmet's tour of the universe.
Does anyone really believe that Isis, Elongated man or Detective Chimp are GOING to BE Dr Fate? No.
hand the helmet over to the new recipient in 52 and be done with it. I'll sign up for the ongoing but those other one-shots are a waste of space as far as I'm concerned.

Actually, with Gerber writing the series, I could believe that Detective Chimp will be Dr. Fate. I don't think I could say that for any other writer. (Maybe Matt Fraction.)

I think it would be interesting if The Question became Dr. Fate. Maybe not the best idea in the world, but definitly interesting.
