WHOA! That's a great piece! Great hard lines and strong edges!
Just out of curiosity: Is it true that Ash is so egocentrical[I distincly remmeber some poeple mentioning it a few times somewhere and well]?
Duncn, Mike gets so much heat for not continuing to draw Hellboy. I think once your stuff hits most of that will disappear and people will go back to enjoying the stories. Really nice feel to that sketch.

This is one cool picture! I like it how the blacks look like spontaneous brush pen (?) lines, although I'm sure they are meticulously planned...

It is generally a good idea to try and stay positive and keep critiques constructive and not tear down artists by saying a drawing is weak or it sucks but to offer honest insight and guidance to help them do better. I've seen several artists take a stab at doing Hellboy, some with some success and some not so much, so I want to be honest here and state for the record...
...that drawing is awesome! You really captured the feel of the Hellboy comic. I am very much looking forward to the upcoming issues and more of your work. Thanks so much for sharing that with us. My only criticism is that it isn't hanging on my wall right now.

Just out of curiosity: Is it true that Ash is so egocentrical[I distincly remmeber some poeple mentioning it a few times somewhere and well]?
Not in my experience, if anything he comes across as enthusiastic about art and the whole creative process, confident yet equally self depracating. At the same time he can get annoyed when people assume he does everything with computers, ie press a button, hey presto art! Simply not true! Just a talented guy with an eye for rusting robots, talking cats and cute girls!

Well spotted, I've used brush pens for a few years now... This was a little more spontaneous really, the comic pages are rather more carefully planned! Still, i always change stuff as I go...

I've been a fan of Senor Duncan's for years now, gulping up everything he's had to offer, everything and anything.
But I've got to say that I'm a bit underwhelmed with the preview art that I've seen thus far, sequentials included.
Well, I guess I'm the jerk that has to be the first fella here to say nay. I'll keep hope alive that DF rolls out some winning HB linework in the furture.
But for now?
Um,Sorry...

No worries JSCOTT. You can't like everything by your favorite creators. Taking issue with something is as welcome as praise IMHO. Just make it constructive, which it appears you have here.

Jscott was joking, Stygian. See his follow-up post, the one that begins with "Gotcha!" ;)
Anyways, this is looking very good. What's the current timetable for "Darkness Calls?" What month and year can I expect the first issue by?
EDIT: And in explaining how you overlooked something, I overlooked the explanation (above) explaining how you overlooked something. Silly me. :D

Now, since Fegredo's doing Hellboy for the time being, will Mignola start drawing Milligan scripts? I'm only half-joking, because that'd be nothing but great.

Duncan, I was curious about something:
Being an "equipment geek", I was wondering what inking tools you enjoy using in your work. I've used a ton of stuff over the years-microns, brushes, gel pens, quills, etc-but never get the perfect feel (heck I do most of my inking now with an RSVP ballpoint which feels the most "right"-how unprofessional!). Maye a Rotring fountain-style pen?
Just curious.
Thanks again for sharing the sketch with us!

Weird thought! But yeah, Pete Milligan is a great writer, not that I read his X-Men stuff I'm thinking more of his earlier stuff, but then I'm biased I guess!

I pretty much stick to the same pens now and they're all from the Pitt Artist range by Faber Castell. The line work is generally inked with the regular S and F pen while the brushier slashes and spot blacks are inked with the brush pen of the same range. Whats great is that unlike a lot of markers the Pitt pens use indian ink and are lightfast, they won't fade.
There you go.

Not-just-out-of-curiosity ;) : Will you be attending any European convetions in the 2006/2007, Duncan? [still can't believe how cool this sketch is. Now I'm totally jazzed about the upcoming series]

Hmm, the subtle back door approach eh?
Sure. "Back Door Man" has always been one of my favorite Doors songs.
What... that song is about... WHAT? Oh, my. That certainly changes my
worldview.
As for Scott (Beloved Editor) Allie... its been suggested that when the
artist pokes him with a sharp stick he is more inclined to share some
art pages with the fans. Just say'n.

Khan, Peterson, I haven't thought in detail about conventions but just for the record I'll be at the Birmingham UK con 9th& 10th December this year (http://www.thecomicsshow.co.uk/), the Bristol UK con in 2007 (dates pending) and theres a good chance I'll be in Spain for a couple, the first in Aviles (Sept 2007) and maybe Madrid after that. And of course I'm forgetting San Diego, haven't been since 2003 so its about time!
