Legolas vs. An Oliphant, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" (2003)

"What about side by side with a friend?"

I'm still not sure how Legolas got through three, three-hour movies filled with constant impending doom without ever mussing his hairdo. But he does, and his shining moment comes in "The Return of the King," unless you're the type of person who considers skateboarding down a flight of steps on a shield to be a shining moment.

Aragorn is always doing that same mannerism where he opens his mouth really wide, brings his sword back as far as it will go, and brings it crashing across. He does it when he's cutting the crust off of bread. And then ghost pirates from beyond swoop in and give him mustard, or whatever. Frodo and Sam are bumbling gaily across rocksides and Gimil only shows up to make a short joke and fall over. So it's Legolas' job to thin out the enemy ranks by standing on something and shooting arrows at people from six miles away so that when they finally show up it's just some guys in cake makeup going "roar" and collapsing. Yeah, I'm starting to remember The Lord of the Rings as more of a Benny Hill skit than it was.

To the uninitiated (cool people), an Oliphant is a creature created completely unlike an elephant in all ways from the mind of good ol' J.R.R. Tolkein. The Oliphant walks onto screen with about, oh, a dozen or so guys riding. Legolas runs up to this giant, fuck-off beast and uses his bow and arrows to scale it, kill everyone riding, slide down onto its head and murder death kill it with an arrowhead to the skull. HE KILLS AN AT-AT WALKER ELEPHANT AND EVERYONE ON BOARD WITH A BOW AND ARROW. IN LIKE 20 SECONDS.

Orlando Bloom can be seen this Fall in Cameron Crowe's "Elizabethtown." The Oliphant can be seen regularly on HBO's "Deadwood."

Frank Dux vs. Chong Li, "Bloodsport" (1988)

"SAY IT~! SAYYYYYYYYYYIT!"

When I was nine years old I already wanted to see Jean Claude Van Damme slow-motion jumping spin-kick anything that moved. Old ladies, lawnmowers, the air. When I didn't understand anything about honor, history, or technique I thought JVD was the coolest human being on the planet. Oh the Berlin Wall came down that's nice LOOK HE'S DOING A SPLIT BETWEEN TWO CHAIRS.

On top of that, the first time I watched Bloodsport I was sitting in my living room floor eating Spaghetti-Os with my Dad. Chong Li (played by adolescent mens tie Bolo Yeung) spends the whole movie decimating people. You'll get an antsy forgettable guy in blue hammer pants throwing roundhouses and Chong Li just steps in and palm strikes his face into Hell. He starts smirking and clapping for himself and I'm loving it. And then out of nowhere he's fighting a guy and KRACKOW he's kicked the guy's leg in half. Bone and cartilage all sticking out. And I'm nine and eating spaghetti. I almost barfed until I died.

Chong Li is unstoppable and Jean Claude is the only man who can stop him. Chong Li even beat Ogre from Revenge of the Nerds' ass! Now my favorite person on the planet is going to slow-motion jumping spin-kick him repeatedly (and on the replay) until my lunch is avenged. The fight has blood, wistful flashbacks, throwing salt in the eyes, fighting while blind, and Van Damage's crazy Brazilian monkey eyes. SAY ITTTTTTTTTTT *staaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaare*

The Game of Death" was supposed to be Bruce Lee's crowning career achievement, but he didn't live long enough to see it finished. He wanted to show gratitude to his former students and instructors by including them in the film. Dan Inosanto was his Filipino-style opponent. Taky Kimura was to have been his praying mantis opponent but was unable to attend. Kenta Kobashi was supposed to be his strong style opponent and Carson would cover his personal style. Basketball star Kareem Abdul-Jabbar would (seriously) be his unknown style opponent.

BECAUSE HE WAS KAREEM ABDUL-JABBAR. What's his style supposed to be, the fucking hook shot? Is he going to elbow Bill Walton in the armpit and make him fall on Lee? But here he was, the ultimate little cap on Bruce Lee's pointed example of how to adapt. That's what Jeet Kune Do was all about, being relaxed like a babbling stream or beating down hard, like a waterfall. And I guess when Kareem leaves a footprint the size of Maryland on your chest it's about putting that water in buckets and beating him in the face with it.

This fight specifically isn't remarkable unless you take into consideration the fights that go along with it. Lee's ability to take on any situation with grace and respect was one of the things that made him such an undeniable legend. He shows up a few more times so I won't dwell here, but yeah, I made sure to include the picture so you people who don't watch movies made before 1994 can recognize where the Bride got her House of Blue Leaves motorcycle jumpsuit.

Or where Kawada gets his Hustle ring clothes

Yu Shu Lien vs. Jen Yu, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (2000)

"Without Green Destiny, you are nothing!"

When I was compiling my initial list of candidates for the list, my girlfriend suggested, "Why not more girlfights?" What am I supposed to put on here? Joan Collins falling into a swimming pool? Lindsay Lohan and Rachael McAdams fighting in "Mean Girls?" If I worked for E! Entertainment Television and was compiling a list of the 50 Sexiest Sexy Sexes that Ever Sexed Out of Control I'd put Lindsay Lohan on the list, but since I've got enough artistic integrity to not go to bed wanting to eat off my own face I decided against it.

Michelle Yeoh most definitely deserves to be represented on the list for just about everything she's been in that Pierce Brosnan wasn't. Zhang Ziyi deserves a spot on the list in case she ever gets into Internet journalism and is looking for a man who appreciates her. "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" is full of the overly-dramatic cello wire-fu that sometimes get a bad rap, obsessed more with visuals and textures than realism and action. It's true. Crouching Tiger has people fighting on swaying tree branches and Chow Yun Fat standing sternly so we don't start asking him about his kung-fu. This fight has some Jack Evans-like unnecessary backflipping but between weapon switches adds the severity and emotion you expect from two aggressive women going at it. They switch off between swords, axes, and karate bazookas but the true fight is in their eyes. It's intense before they ever start swinging. They ain't even gotta touch or nothin'. It ain't like I like chick on chick a somethin!

As a personal message to Ziyi Zhang, my interests include long walks on the beach, puppies, and women who can make their leg stick straight up in the air.

Dragon vs. Colt, "Way of the Dragon" (1972)

"Movement number 4: Dragon seeks path. Hi-yah!"

Chuck Norris has the upper hand. He's big, young, and strong. He has Bruce beat. Chuck Norris, the man who we most often find thrust kicking the Deadly Foes of Jonathan Brandis through a windshield, has Bruce Lee (who only would lose to Batman or Captain America, remember) DEFEATED. Down and out. Unfortunately he was still a few years away from making FIREWALKER so he doesn't act fast enough, and that gives Bruce the opportunity to do what, class?

Adapt. From static to flowing. From attacking to counter-striking. Moving in and out. Lee sets him up, destroys his limbs, and finally, because he has no choice and Chuck Norris is a whole hell of a lot harder to beat up than Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (and possibly even Bill Walton), guillotines Colt right out of his 45's and wins the fight. Then he pays respect to his fallen opponent. Because he is Bruce Lee and was too damn great to stay on this Earth for too long.

This was one of the (if not THE) last movies to be filmed at the actual Roman Coliseum, so Colt and Dragon duking it out in the very literal gladiatorial sense is a big deal. Bruce Lee would go on to be the most important martial arts legend and icon of modern times. Chuck Norris would go on to be the guy who gave the thumbs up to the Average Joes in "Dodgeball."

Frodo-X

Gandalf vs. the Balrog is one of my favorites. It was so gorgeous. It would have been cool if they could have done the part after the water, when the flames are gone, but I doubt even WETA could pull that off.

Ents Siege of Isengard was sweet too.

And, though I don't really like the new Star Wars, Darth Maul was pretty sweet with the lightstaff vs. two lightsabers.

As a note, regular human vs. human fight scenes tend to bore me, which is why I chose three fantasy scenes.

Aryan posterboy Flash Gordon dukes it out with Timothy Dalton on a revolving disk that sprouts spikes each time Brian Blessed presses the buttons on his remote control.

'Gordon's Alive!'

But for actual cool fight scenes, almost anything with Tony Jaa. The tree sequence & later mountain assault in Ong-Bak; the continuous take multi-level battle in Warrior King and then the final boss fights were he breaks the legs of every opponent before taking on three tanks in Warrior King.

Tony Jaa's the man.

Nightcrawler VS The Secret Service - I never thought they'd be able to pull of his transporting without making it cheesy but that qhole thing was the best ballet fight sequence ever.

Christian Bale VS anyone in Equillibrium - He is the Gun-Fu Master. The supreme confidence in what his is doing is just so damn scary. It's not random shooting and knowing eventually he'll hit someone. It's I'm going to shoot you between the eyes from behind with my back turned and you're going to know it bitch.

Animated Justice League vs. The Secret Society. In a football arena. And they start the fight by charging at one another like the Challenge of the Superfriends intro, instead of wussing out like that intro did they had them all meet in the middle and it dissolved into a minute of delicious chaos as various energy blasts, shapeshifting punches, and bodies flew everywhere. And that's just the beginning of the fight.

Edit: Do TV shows count?

Too many for me to name but...

In american films the best fight I've see in the last couple of year was Brad Pitt vs. Eric Bana from the movie Troy.

Perfect set up of Pitt yelling "Hector" while Bana's family is telling him how much they loved him. Then when they fight Pitt fights with total confidence while Bana struggles to survive, talk about acting while fighting. If more american moves had fight scene like this Action Movies would still have some respect.

And just because I watched it the other day Russell Means vs Wes Studi from Last of the Mohicans that last 20 mins of that's movie is incredible and when Means takes that axe to Studi you understand why people call Russell Means the baddies Indian ( Native ) on the planet:D .

Neo and Trinity in the first Matrix as they enter the building to rescue Morpheus. The way parts of this fight (bullet time) was filmed was original and had never been done before. Easily the best part of a great movie.

And dare I say it (my girlfriend at the time made me watch these movies) the fights in the two Bridget Jones movies between Hugh Grant and that other dude. They were funny and they were probably the most realistic fights I've seen as both were very bad at it. The only redeeming parts of these two movies IMO.

Anime is a touchy subject. I'm very loyal to Studio Ghibli but I know that there is an entire, broad spectrum of animation that I don't necessary like or appreciate, and I also know that most of the world doesn't appreciate either. It's JAPANIMATION, or as I like to call it, JANIMATIONPAN.

Before Sailor Moon, before Pokémon, before Princess Mononoke and Cowboy Bebop it was "Akira" that we all associated with anime. I saw Akira before I saw anything Miyazaki had ever done. I imagine most people did. Now kids are growing up in a saturated market where every cartoon about a sexy French maid with guns for hands gets their DVDs stocked at the mall and hardly know what it's like to wake up one day and know, finally, that there was something different.

The Tetsuo and Kaneda battle has guns, motorcycles, the voice actor who did Leonardo on the old Ninja Turtles cartoon, and a progression of plot that leads one character to be engulfed and suffocated by the body of another. And then there is some philosophy. But whether we understood it or not we'd never forget it.

Now if we're talking fighting, I mean fisticuffs I'd go with the Spider-Man and Doc Ock on the train. One of the best fight shown on screen. Also, I agree with Buzz with the Quiet Man. I love that fight. Other fights I like:

- Mitchum vs. Peck in Cape Fear
- King Arthur vs. the Black Knight in Monty Python & the Holy Grail
- Jerry Mitchell vs. Buddy Revell in Three O'Clock High. Can't beat a good ol' highschool fight.

Wayne was so upset The day we were to film the fight, he came to the set drunk. Bu even drunk he knew all his lines and hit every one of his marks.
During the fight hee broke my nose, and picked me up and threw me into a tree so hard i have been going to the chriopracter ever since. But what i remember most, was that after we filmed the fight Wayne told me, "You did real good Dern...real good!"

Dern, "Even with a broken nose and a bad back I never felt better!"

How about the scene in "Superman III" where Supes fights himself?

That was a wicked fight. "You always wanted to fly Kent"

The one from Akira was really awesome too. Akira was the first bit of anime I was ever exposed to and it, along with things like Ghost in the Shell and Neon Genesis Evangelion, is what I compare most everything else anime and mango too. Great, great stuff.

Most everything I'd cite has already been mentioned from Kung Fu Hustle to Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon to Kill Bill so I really haven't got anything new to add just now.

For me though the best fight I've seen in recent memory has to be the final duel between Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Everything in the Prequels was leading to this moment and everything is the Original Trilogy would flow from it and it was just perfect.

DubipR & davids --

What I love about the brawl in THE QUIET MAN is that Wayne & McLaughlen stop mid-fight to have some refreshments in the pub, then resume their brawl!

The movie runs something like 110 minutes, IIRC. It was made at a time when Republic Pictures head Herbert W. Yates decreed no Republic picture would run longer than 100 minutes. Ford shot the film and edited it the way he wanted. When he showed it to Yates, the film came to an abrupt end just as Wayne & McLaughlen squared off for their fight.

"Where's the fight?" Yates screamed.

"Cut it out," said Ford. "You said the picture had to be under 100 minutes."

"Well, put it back in!" Yates demanded. Which, of course, was Ford's scheme all along...

Some great ones were mentioned. I'm adding two from the 80s:

-Riggs and Murtaugh in the last 20 min. of the first Lethal Weapon. The pacing, the music, the urgency, all fantastic. And to think, the mayhem starts AFTER they're both drained of their strength and horrifically tortured.

-Almost any gunfight in Silverado. It was a great homage to good ol' fashioned gunfights, but there were so many neat tricks here and there that I could've sworn the writers took some notes from a few Anime flicks. Plus, Kevin Costner wasn't hogging the camera.

For classic movie buffs, any swordfight involving Basil Rathbone is cause for celebration. Robin Hood vs. Guy of Gisbourne(Adventures of Robin Hood), Don Diego de la Vega vs. Rafael Moncada(Mark of Zorro), Hawkings vs. Ravenhurst(The Court Jester)--all classy swordfights, and in the case of Court Jester, effin' funny! The final fight between Rathbone and Danny Kaye was for many years the funniest swordfight ever on screen. Now it's a dead tie with Westley vs Inigo in Princess Bride.

For classic movie buffs, any swordfight involving Basil Rathbone is cause for celebration. Robin Hood vs. Guy of Gisbourne(Adventures of Robin Hood),

And, having watched it for the first time a year or so ago, a fine adventure movie that still holds up.

Anyhow, not an individual fight, but a mass battle, I feel the need to mention the final battle in Vandread: 2nd Stage.

Matrix vs. Megabyte at the end of Season 3 of Reboot. Viscious, viscious fight.

Superman's fights with Darkseid at the end of both S:TAS and JLU.

Van Fanel vs. Allen Schezar in the final episode of Escaflowne. Pretty much everyone on both sides stops to watch a fight between the series two main protagonists that had been foretold in the first two episodes of the series.

Neo Vs. Smith in the real world. This fight works well for me. It's set apart from pretty much every other fight in the movie by the down and dirty more realistic fighting neccesitated by it's setting.
