View Full Version : 30 Rock

I tried this show; but found it only exemplified what's wrong with SNL, which is that it's un-funny in the extreme. After about 15 minutes in which I didn't laugh once, I switched to PBS. (Where I watched an exploration of the Hindenburg disaster, which was interesting, while imparting no new information.) 30 Rock may not be the first new show to die; but it's going to be close behind!

I liked Alec Baldwin and his speil about the trifection oven. Overall, it felt like a first episode, no one really settled into their roles and the direction still uncertain. I think the show could go either way. Hopefully for the better, I like Tina Fey.

The trifection oven thing would've been OK, if I didn't feel like I was sitting through an old-fashioned, in-show commercial. Have you ever seen the Old "Burns & Allen Show?" in the middle of a sentence, they'd go into a whole thing about Carnation Evaporated Milk, out of nowhere. It was too obvious and naked to be really funny, and left me cold.

The trivection oven part is what made me turn the show off. I thought it was a bit until the first commercial that ran was for GE's trivection oven. Disgustingly blatant product promotion within the shows drive's me up the freaking wall.

But then again I'm a sucker for Tracy Morgan, hell I even watched his show faithfully, and it was much worse than this.

I flip channels during commercials, so I assumed it was a bit up until I read this thread. Now it's too late to feel angry about it.

Although I did think "can cook a turkey in 22 minutes" was an unusually long time to use in dialogue. It didn't seem absurdly short enough.

Spoken like someone who's never cooked a turkey:)

What people are forgetting is that this isn't supposed to be a funny show. It's a show about people that are funny.

(what? wait..this is the one that's supposed to be funny? erm....)

I don't find Tracey Morgan funny. I don't find Martin Lawrence funny...so guess what...I don't find Tracey Morgan playing Martin Lawrence funny.

Ratchel Drahght (?)'s rotating character thing looks like it's going to be annoying as every character she did on SNL.

I did love the opening after Tina buys the hotdogs and she's walking along and they're doing the MTM show riff. It just went down hill from there.

I thought the show was pretty good. I like Tina Fey and I think her style of humor isnt for everyone, but I will give it at least the next episode. I liked the line "Its not HBO; its TV" but I guess I'm the only one. I have a feeling this will be this season's Sons and Daughters, in that not many will find it funny but the ones who do will think its hillarious.

No, I liked that line too. I also laughed at Alec Baldwin saying "I cast that cat personally", there was something so absurd about it.

And I didn't feel the trivection oven speech was a product placement at all, I thought the entire scene was a great joke about corporate interests and entertainment. Letterman used to do that kind of stuff all the time when he was on NBC.

It wasn't bad but it just seemed kind of in love with itself and not very funny either. Not a patch on Entourage.

I knew Morgan was mentally ill when he was waving around a RED lightsabre and saying he was a Jedi ;)

I didn't love it but I liked it.

Baldwin's straight faced humor is always gold. It's all about wondering if this guy is really supposed to be taken seriously. Whether it's seducing Canteen Boy, talking about his Swetty Balls or spontaneously giving a market speil on a Trifection oven, Adam doesn't break his poker face.

Tracy Morgan has landed a good role. Here's hoping the steady work improves his acting.

Meanwhile Tina Fey is the straight man. They have to work on getting better caustic comebacks. Get some advice from the Arrested Development guys that wrote Michael Bluth and they'll be set.

Won't be staying after to watch 20 Good Years anymore though. Woo, that stunk up the room

i thought it was funny...i loved the line "are you the only black nerd or is it just you and steve urkel??"...i think it will take a few eps. for it to get it's legs...it's funny enough...there's some transitional issues for fey in front of the camera and jane seems woefully miscasted, alec is good as is tracy...i've seen a lot worse that's for sure...i think it has a chance.

I thought that Fey and Baldwin were absolutely terrific.

Tina for just her facial reactions everytime someone cracked on her. Like after Baldwin said "I like you, you have the boldness of a much younger woman" and again after Tracy told her that he knew she wasnt rich because of her teeth. Hilarious.

The music was so cartoony I found it funny.

Jane Krasinski is playing the role written for Dratch. Dratch was in the original pilot, she just cameoed in this pilot. Apparently the studio didnt find her "attractive enough" for a main character. For shame too as I find her hilarious. She is suppose to still be onboard playing various characters in minor cameos.

20 Good Years has been touted as the worst of the new shows since the critics reviewed it several months ago. For shame too because I love Tambor and Lithgow.

I caught the re-air on Bravo and I liked it very much.

I think the Fey/Baldwin dynamic was great. They played off each other very well. I think Tina was very good and less glib than she usually was on 'Weekend Update'. It was great to see her dance too, as I always had the impression that she was a stick figure. It was nice seeing that she had hips and a dumper.

I think Tracy Morgan was fairly good also, as long as they keep his outbursts reigned in.

If I remember that it's on, I'll check out again next week.

Hey, I watched this week's show but I realize it's not on until tomorrow in the US so I won't say much about it, other than I laughed a lot and I think the show is progressing getting better.

I noticed that Jane Krakowski didn't appear at all, and while I really didn't miss her, I thought that was a little weird. Wasn't she barely on last week's show as well? Maybe it has something to do with her being a last minute addition to the show, or maybe they just can't think of much to do with her character.

Anyways, remember everyone: live every week like it's shark week.

Sure, It can be pretty juvinille, and yes it is a sitcom, but ThirtyRock is hilarious, Tina Fey has a really coarse sense of humor and she really brings it. I dig how she's never truly out of place in her surroundings. They should have let her make this show a couple of years ago.

Shout out to 'The Shadow' , Baldwin's character is pretty unique, however long it lasts...it's so great..It's too bad there will be no Kim Bassinger cameo.

The best part is the other writers on the show who, look like CBRF posters, and not like sitcom stars.

Yea...but there arn't any sketches...and it's not Masterpiece either, it's just a sitcom that is pretty good.
I didn't even think people even watched Saturday Night Live anymore-of course it's weak, I'ts been that was for what...close to a decade. Will Ferral makes movies now.
Sketch comedy is what the problem is. Out-outraging what's already assinine in real life, just gets lame...and Lorne Michaels is less a part of ThirtyRock.

I've never been a fan of Will Ferrell; but he's got his 2nd good film in theatres now.

I've not made an effort to watch SNL in years; but I do catch bits of it from time to time. Generally, it's like a really horrible accident: no matter how much you want to look away, you just have to stare in horror!

There are sitcoms on the air, which are actually funny. I'm not going to waste my time with something that doesn't make me laugh.

No comments on the super-sized show last night?

I think Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey are great on this show, I love Jack's constant put-downs to Liz ("If you were any other woman in the world, I'd be turned on right now.") If the rest of the show can get up near their level, it can be really be a winner.

My only problems with last night's were that I'm not a fan of Jane Krakowski or her character (my favourite episodes seem to be the ones she's not in), and that they seemed to devote all the extra time to Jack's blooper reel. Waaay too long, which is too bad because it could have been really funny.

This is my favorite of the new shows this season.

Jack and Liz are terrific together. Liz telling Jack to "nut up" was the best line last night.

I wanted to see more use of Judah on the show, but not like he was out on the balcony. Man that was hysterical.

This new Thursday lineup is phenomenal. These are the best comedy's on right now, and I am greatly awaiting the return of Scrubs.

It's a strange show, it can have very bad and very good points in the same show. What I don't like are the situations they get in...
Tracy won't read the cards, they think he's illerate, he fakes it to get out of the show (ho-hum)
Jane (character name?) tries to win people over with her clumsy sexuality (big deal)
Jack can't really act but no one will tell him, even himself (sigh)

But the individual jokes are often great.
-"Huh, that George WIll just gets more conservative." "Tracy Jordan: Smallest Penis in TV" "Where the lesbians at!?"
-"Mmmm non-dairy creamer...gack!" ""Ghost Face Killa, Yo Yo Ma, on stage for Muffin-top!"
- "If you were any other woman in the world I would be so turned on now" and the aforementioned "can I get two coffee cups?"

HIt and miss in each show. Very frustrating.

But if it keeps performing like it did last night (something like 5.6 million- worse than Tuesday) it's not like it'll be hanging around much longer anyways. Then again, what can NBC expect when it's upgainst CSI and Grey's Anatomy?

It sure is.

Back when the season began of the two SNL-inspired NBC series I thought 30 Rock would be crap and facing cancellation by this point and Studio 60 would be the better show and the one I'd be watching religiously. I got to preview the pilots of both months in advance and they pretty much strengthened that initial feeling.

While I haven't quite given up on Studio 60 yet and we don't even know if it'll be canceled tough it seems probable, pretty much the opposite is true. Funny how things work out sometimes.

6 "Where did your accent go?"
7 Jack running after finding out about the black crusaders
8. The cleveland montage
9. the part when Liz told jack about him falling asleep during sex, his expression was too funny
10. "you cant use any of my songs"

I'm glad NBC is giving the show another shot next season, I hope they keep the same timeslot despite the huge competition. If the show keeps getting better like it has, I think they can start winning people over.

Good episode though, and I hope the show gets another full season. Didn't Arrested Development end up getting three? Maybe we'll be so lucky or moreso here. Anyways, thursday's episode was awesome. Using the "MILF Island" finale as a backdrop was hilarious, especially the scene where Liz's dialogue matches the contestant's.
