View Full Version : Should I get Oh My Goddess?

I have been hearing some good things about the manga, mostly stuff that involves Belldandy, and I have done some checking up on it from Wikipedia and I am getting a Tenchi vibe from it. Which is no problem since I do enjoy Tenchi.
Since I am new to this series and I would like some opinions to those who are more familiar with the series to give me some views on if the manga is worth checking out.
I also want to know if the manga has any interesting villains in it?

AMG is more about comedy and romance than action and sci-fi like Tenchi, it's a really fluffy series, but also has some good action, fun and sex appeal, plus the characters are just plain charming, it's also got great artwork and lots of great motorcycle and car related stuff if you're into that too.
It centers a lot on the relationship between Belldandy and Keiichi, which is pretty fluffy, but the other characters are also extremely interesting and cahrismatic, particularly Urd who supplies a lot of the interesting fantasy/sci-fi related storylines IMO, not to mention fanservice.
The series also has some great villains, although most are more comical like Mara and Senbei, there are others who are extremely scary and villainous like Hild, who is Urd's mom and Queen of Hell (and the greatest MILF in mangadom), but despite that they're all still very lovely and charming.
I strongly suggest you get it if you like a good romantic comedy, since that's what it is for the most part, although there are some story arcs that focus more on the fantasy/sci-fi aspects of the series, and the ones that do are really worth getting.

When villans are an issue, they're pretty cool, though a lot of it is the day to day lives of Keichi and Belldandy, and the trouble having her sisters around can cause, as well as the daily lives and adventures of his friends at school, his boss, and his little sister.
It's a pretty fun comic, which is from AfterNoon magazine originally, whose official policy is "Manga that makes you relaxed/happy" or something along those lines.... a lot of high quality titles, many of which Dark Horse has imported.
It's a bit more toned down in some ways then Tenchi, since Belldandy and Keichi are an item [her sisters, and his sister living with them helps make it okay with his parents, and God, I suppose. Yes, God is an occasional, unseen cast member :)], and there's no harem aspect to it. It's just pure, fun manga. The art style changes a bit to become more rounded, which I liked after the first few volumes. If you want to sample it, back issues of it's monthly comic book run are pretty easy to find.

I wouldn't say there is no harem aspect to it, as Peorth, Urd and Skuld seem to have crushes on K1.
sorta like all other harem manga but we all ultimetly know which one the hero is going to end up with.
although Tenchi has always been a bit vague on that aspect IIRC.

Seeing as the Movie takes place after the serries that would be a bad idea. Unless you want to ruin the serries for him/her.

Not that the movie has that many spoilers, seeing how there isn't really that much to spoil in the first place.
After a while, OMG is kinda Ranma-esque in the sense that the basic status quo stays the same, despite all the new players in the plot. It really doesn't detract from the series' enjoyability, but it's still a fair warning.

I read like the first book and then saw the movie. Ya just have to know the premise and some character names and Bob's your uncle.

I really liked it, espescially as Fujishima's style solidified and became much more polished and refined, but I stopped reading it after a hundred or so issues just because it was dragging on a little too much. I mean, I understand that it's hard to develop Keiichi's relationship with Belldandy when that's part of the entire point of the series, but it was getting a little silly.
I figure I'd wait until it was all done with, then go back and read it to the end.

Actually, the series is still going at Japan with no end on sight yet, so it could be a very long while.
Personally, I think Fujishima should just wrap the Keiichi/Belldandy relationship and take a risk taking the series to a spotlight on Urd, Skuld or Peorth, who are far more adaptable, multifacetic characters. The problem with Belldandy is she is just so perfect, it's hard to keep a character like that going and going and keep it fresh and evolving. I actually find the other goddesses more alluring precisely because they are flawed, more realistic, more like real people, more relatable.

Hmmm... The status quo shifts bit by bit. Keiichi eventually graduates and gets a job. Hild shows up. The angels show up. Minor things, but it does change.
Frankly, I think the series really stopped being about Keiichi and Belldandy's relationship a long time ago. They are the stars of the series, yeah. But we know nothing's going to ever break them up.
Lately the series seems to have shifted to arcs about minor characters, individual villian attacks or the series old stand-by of racing arcs.
The Queen Sayoko arc pretty much cemented their relationship. And I kinda like seeing one couple in anime/Manga that is just a stable mutually loving relationship.

Not really that I saw. Urd seems to be completely nuetral to him, Skuld has her own romantic intrest and Peorth only ever went after him out of spite, just like Sayoko.

Albeit the hints are subtle but many, so there's a possibility of such a relationship existing.
As for Peorth, she said in the manga that she loves Keiichi to get him to sleep with her, she's a first class goddess, and despite her personality and methods, she's still a first class goddess, and subject to the same rules as someone like Belldandy, that means she can't possibly lie, meaning that it is true that Peorth might be in love with him.
As for Skuld, there are some hints that she might be in love KEiichi as well, she's jealous of his relationship with her sister and wants him to herself, of course this is all pre-Sentaro, however does anyone else think it might somewhat suspicious that Skuld is attracted to someone who is basically a younger version of Keiichi, just saying.

Frankly, given that it's been fairly established for a long while that Keiichi and Belldandy are OBVIOUSLY in love with each other, I'd like to see that relationship grow beyond the whole shy and chaste point into something with more depth. Let them deal with the trials and tribulations of actually being involved with someone... it's not like the adventure ends once the real commitment begins.

To a some degree they are. Both have started meeting their partner's family.

In Urd's case, if they're there at all, it's all subtext and there's few even minor hints at it.

She wants to sleep with him because it would prove to her she's better at her job than Belldandy

Skuld is pretty vocal that she wants to split them up not because she's in love with Keiichi, but because she thinks he's not good enough for her sister.

Your point? It still exists
Irrelevant, it still doesn't change her state as a first class goddess.
It's in the subtext once again, in the short time when she was in her adult form after the LoT, again during her puberty, and once again the fact that she's dating Sentaro, who's basically a younger version of Keiichi.
One of the best things about AMG imo is that it has so much subtext to work with and interpret, another good aspect of the series.

It does, however, completely change her reasons for wanting to sleep with him.

Three times. Two of which arn't Skuld on a normal day and the third is a different person who has the very great advantage of not dating her sister.

And?
A different person who is practically identical to Keiichi in almost every way.
