Gen13
Worldstorm
Ultimate Power

Worldstorm is really just an introduction to the revamped Wildstorm Universe, but still worth checking out. Gen13 and Ultimate Power both have promising starts. I also got 52 and Ultimate X-Men.

What did everyone else get?

Gen13
Worldstorm
Civil War #3 (was missing that)
52

Oh and got a bunch of Cable & Deadpool trades. Love Deadpool, he's so funny.

Is Gen 13 a reboot or a continuation of the old series? Last I checked the "kids" were in their mid to late twenties, after being thought dead no less, and a new bunch of teenagers had taken their place and book.

Yes.

.
It's my fault for phrasing the question the way I did, but I don't know if you mean that yes the book has been rebooted or yes the book is a continuation of the second series which ended a few years ago.

I had a load of catching up to do and I ended up with fourteen comics this week, the two new ones from this week being Gen13 and Worldstorm.

Gen13 was really hard. Good, but hard.

I can tell its going to be a really great book.

TCJohnson

How do you mean hard? Hard as in cold and heartless, or hard as in hard to follow or understand?

I haven't been to the shop yet, but I'm intrigued by Gen13, providing they have any copies left.

I couldn't stand to pick up Ultimate Power. I've sworn off Greg Land books. Now I understand inkers being tracers, but when a penciler does it...

Well, just take a look at where the cover came from.

That Spider-man is from art by Travis Charest. Not sure where that image of Cap is from, from Land himself or Hitch.

I would have thought that entire concept of Ultimate Power, combined with who was WRITING it, would be enough to turn you off, but oh well, as long as people are avoiding it. :)

52
Green Arrow
Tales of the Unexpected #1
Fables
Martian Manhunter
Civil War: Frontline
Ultimate Power
Ultimate X-Men
World Storm
Gen 13

...So, Gail, when will you be killing off Grunge? Please, please, please say it'll be soon?

This was the week of tpbs for me. I only picked up three individual issues. Three tpbs as well. Since those are more expensive, I tend to think those dominated my comic shop needs this week.

I didn't pick up Gen 13 (sorry, Gail. I really don't like the art).

Uncanny X-Men
Civil War: Frontline
Thunderbolts

But the week was dominated by tpbs.

Ares
The Pulse
Invincible

I also saw the first volume of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories but somebody grabbed the store's only copy before I could. Sigh...

I like Oeming's depiction of Marvel's Ares. He's fun, in a rather rugged way. He was trying not to be a bastard. He was raising his son without the boy's mother around (because he doesn't want any "girly feelings" confusing his son).

I imagine this is the version of the character we will see in Mighty Avengers.

It's my fault for phrasing the question the way I did, but I don't know if you mean that yes the book has been rebooted or yes the book is a continuation of the second series which ended a few years ago. It's a reboot, but it really feels a lot like the first series. That's why my answer was ambiguous.

It's not like Greg copy and pasted the photos. What's wrong with using real life models when you paint? I know it's a short cut, but it is nececarry unless you want to give Greg months to draw a book ala Alex Ross. Painting rather than drawing a comic greatly extends production time, and Greg does what he needs to do in order to follow a monthly schedule and as a big fan of his I'm glad.

Well, that was my comic book guy's argument.

Though I bought enough books that week, and every week, so I don't think he minded me avoiding that one.

Anyway, here is my pull list. Might picked up more, but this is what I went in expecting.

52 WEEK #23 $2.50
DMZ #12 (MR) $2.99
FABLES #54 (MR) $2.99
FABLES SPECIAL EDITION #1 (MR) $0.25
GEN 13 #1 $2.99
GREEN ARROW #67 $2.99
TALES OF THE UNEXPECTED #1 (OF 8) $3.99
WORLDSTORM #1 $2.99 ?
PIRATES OF CONEY ISLAND #1 (OF 8) $2.99
SAM NOIR SAMURAI DETECTIVE #2 $2.99
CIVIL WAR FRONT LINE #7 (OF 11) $2.99
POWERS #20 (MR) $2.95
PUNISHER #39 (MR) $2.99
STAN LEE MEETS DR STRANGE $3.99
ULTIMATE X-MEN #75 $3.99
WOLVERINE ORIGINS #7 $2.99

I also picked up this sweet $40 Vampire Hunter D Amano artbook from Dark Horse my shop had picked up. I forget if I asked for it, but he had it and it was so very sweet... Now I need another Ammano artbook like a hole in the head and I keep wondering if this fascination with the artist is linked with an ex who got me hooked on him. Still it was a very awesome and impressive book.

I roll my eyes at the tut-tuting of use of Photo reference for illustrations...
ALL GOOD ARTISTS USE REFERENCE!

Gen 13 was GREAT... nice streamlined retelling of they're origin with a proper and brutal twist.

Excited to see where this will lead...

I agree with Crowley, Gen13 was awesome. Gail's picked up on the emotional core of the original team, as far as I can tell, and has really run with the original concept. Add to me to the list of those looking forward to next month's. =)

Look again. Greg copied, photoshopped, and pasted the photos.

There's reference photos and then there's picking up whatever magazine you have around and tracing images out of it. Of course, when those magazines are other comics (or comics mags) or Greg Lands seemingly nice collection of porn, then I think there's an issue.

There's a thread going on in the Lying in the Gutters forum talking all about this if people want to take the discussion there.

that Charest copy I don't excuse... the photo referencing though... from a photo or a movie still... who cares?

I used to take Polaroids... almost every illo I do I take out my digital camera and shoot reference...

that Charest copy I don't excuse... the photo referencing though... from a photo or a movie still... who cares?I would imagine the people who own the copyrights he infringed on would care. I'd be fucking livid if he did that with something of mine, but for some reason people in the comic industry constantly turn a blind eye to it.

I used to take Polaroids... almost every illo I do I take out my digital camera and shoot reference...I use photos for reference all the time, but I don't copy other people's photos down to the smallest detail, and I don't scan them and put them into the actual artwork. That's plagiarism, even if plenty of people do it and plenty of other people shrug their shoulders over it.

You and I seem to have a different definition of referencing. Slightly changing a photo (which may very well be the intellectual property of a photographer) is not referencing to me. Referencing is when you look at a photo to figure out how an arm holding a sword looks at a certain angle etc. and then draw it that way.

I agree with Pip, but I still love Land. Still he should cut a check to the fine people that brought us those the movies as he, and this hurts to type, swiped them.

no we agree... Land used reference in the case of the Magneto and Topher Grace photo.

He found a pose he liked in both cases and drew them accordingly... they're not exact copies.

You're joking, right?

He barely changed anything, he just added on some things and removed others.

Look, the artist on Fallen Angel paints over photos of Minnie Driver for almost all the panels of Liandra, but at least he makes certain changes to the physiognomie to give her a more unique look. Land doesn't even bother with that.

Today's Lying in the Gutters has bad news for Land.

Marvel Comics has issued an instruction to artists, basically, to ask them to stop swiping.
