I'm in the Financial District, so this is the first I'm hearing of it.
Looking around, it looks like a helicopter accident.

The radio news anchor said that it was close to some heliport and that details were sketchy, but so far planes were being told to land, air routes were revised and dow-jones was taking a plunge.
Oh, newscast just updated that half the building (50 stories high) is on fire.
More news: Bel Air building. Crash was on the 20-21st floor. FBI ruled out a terrorist attack.

I'm fine. It's about 20 blocks from me. I can hear the sirens.

Whoops.
We may have to move Manhattan to lower ground. Who's up for constructing huge underground cities?

Will there be raves/orgies on the eve of every major battle?

A friend of mine lives and works in that neighborhood. Haven't had been able to get in touch with her yet, but she works in news radio in New York and certainly wasn't home at the time of the crash. I'm sure she's just busy.
But man, that's crazy.

Apparently the plane was being flown by Yankee pitcher Cory Lidle.

Sadly I'm sure many people on the 'net (not here, but elsewhere I'm certain) will start making the jokes now.
As a Red Sox fan, I find no humor in this newest piece of news. :(

Wow.
wow
I was just reading a piece about him in the NYT a month or two about his love of flying. And of course the piece evoked the memory of Yankee captain Thurman Munson, who died 25 years ago in a small plane crash.
Edit: NYT is confirming they found Lidle on the ground at the site of the crash.

Spooky isn't it. That if indeed he was Flying the plane or in the plane he and Thurman Munson both died as Yankees in plane crashes. Both were in their early 30's.
Wierd..
Sad to hear it. he was really turning a corner in his career moving from Philly to the Yankeees.

But there are in Jersey.
I believe there are in Long Island and possibly staten Island, and at least a few in Upper NY state.

There aren't ANY airports in Manhattan. There's JFK & LaGuardia in Queens, and Newark in Jersey.

NJ also has Teeterborough, which gets a LOT of small plane traffic. My grandfather used to fly out of there.

On the local news, they're saying the plane did in fact take off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, which basically handles small general aviation planes rather than commerical jets.

Spoke with my friend. Turns out she was two short blocks away from the accident. Was in a meeting and heard the crash. Went outside, saw the smoke and instinctively ran towards it (she's a radio news reporter/producer). While she wasn't set to be working right then, she was the first on the scene and called the station up and filed the first report. She said within minutes the place was a madhouse of cops and firemen. The reporter they sent out showed up and she got the hell out of there.
Thankfully she's OK, but man, NYC can't catch a break.
