View Full Version : Voter Burnout

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm feeling it. Granted, the state I live in has had a major election just about every 6 months for the last two or three years or so, but I'm totally feeling apathy. It probably doesn't help that every appointment-type vote is sewn up, and no one really knows what any of the ballot measures are actually going to do, other than the panicky paranoia-style commercials that I've been bombarded with for the last three months or so. I can't even get involved with a throw the bums out style rush like the rest of the country seems to. What am I to do?

Between Granholm (whom I want OUT) and DeVoss (whom I do NOT want IN), I'd say I'm pretty well boned.

I've got the impression that Deval Patrick - running for governor here in MA - is gonna win.
Even though it's out there that he's basically planning on raising taxes, not rolling back the state income tax that we voted for a couple years ago, wants to give the illegals all sorts of perks, and forcing us citizens to pay even more money to this piece of crap state government, I still think he's gonna win 'cause this state just doesn't get it.
It makes me want to vote for Kerry Healy even more.........but it's almost like even if I do, it won't matter since he's probably gonna win. So why bother voting?
(And BTW: Deval's black, and I swear to you (&#%$! - see?) I've heard more than 1 person on the radio declare "If you don't vote for him, you're a racist!" - one person even called Healy a b*tch and added "If you vote for that b*tch, you're a racist!")
*sigh*
Politics suck.

That seems like the opinion of most Michigan voters this year. Reminds me of 98 when Engler and Figer(spelling) were on the ballot.
Personally I am keeping with Granholm. I believe our states troubles have nothing to do with her. The simple fact is the auto industry is changing. To adapt the big three are cutting jobs or movng them to Mexico and China. We have been a one industry state for decades. Getting new industries into Michigan is nearly impossible with Mexico being so attractive. Plus any plan she has is killed in the state leg. because of it being controlled by the other party. The same would be true for if we had a Republican governor and a democratic house and senate.
I do give her some credit for elimating over 4 billion in debt that was left for her by Engler.
Looking at the roughly 3 political threads that appear on the community site of a comic book message board every day for the last 5 years, i can't say i understand how any normal person would be burned out on the political process.

I swear to god, if 87 doesn't get passed, I'm gonna explode. The "No" commercials are sponsored by Chevron, for Christ's sake! And the "Yes" are sponsored by the Heart Association.
And I'm gonna fly into some kind of rage if the cigarette tax goes through!

It's gotten to the point where I've stopped caring. I used to, but I don't now. Neither candidate is ever really one I would agree with, but in a two-party system it's the only option you get. I end up having to choose which topics are more important to me because I don't fall on either side of the great big party fence.
So I'm basically down to voting for spite. If I don't know either candidate I can look at their opinions and weigh them, but that isn't the case this year and probably won't be next time either. I can't stand Granholm, so I'll end up voting DeVos (who I don't really like either, but I like him better). If Hillary runs in '08 the Republicans have got my vote, 'cause I really hate her.
And no, it isn't a "they're both women, you sexist" thing, it's their personalities and their politics that bother me.

Hell. I live in Pennsylvania. We've got Rick Santorum. What else even needs to be said?

I don't think anyone who understands what is going on in Michigan right now. Would think of anyone voting against Granholm as sexist. The leader always suffers if the state suffers.
By the way Frodo, where you at in Michigan? I am guessing either the burbs of Detroit or the west side of the state.

About 50 miles North of Detroit. If you know Romeo and Imlay City, I'm in between them.

I have a friend that used to live in Romeo. Never been, but from how he talked about it. It sounded like a cool place to live.(compare to up north where I live)
Just in case you know him. His name is Charlie Wyatts.

Nope, don't know him. I don't know anyone from Romeo that isn't family.
How far up North? I ask because I do know some of the Houghton Lake/Prudenville area. My dad owned a bar there.

I live in Prudenville currently, before that I live in Tawas. Spend some time in Hale and I grew up in Skidway Lake.

Well then you probably know Bumppers. That's the bar my father owned.
It was a very dumb idea. The lake is 30 miles around, and there are 31 bars.
He was screwed before he began.

Used to haunt the place all the time., but soon it is going to be tore down for a Wallgreen's, that and the Brass Lantern.
Oh, there isn't 31 bars. They are only 16, not bad for a population of only 12,000. Here are the bars that are left.
Family Bar, Bumppers, Sandbar, Pressure Crack, Kilcare, Limberlost, Longbranch, Shinanagians, Funky Turtle, Old Town, Sams, Holiday Inn, Norway, Nottingham, Northshore, and Spikehorn.

Family Bar
Bring the kids!
Shinanagians
That sounds like the kind of place where the waiters wear "flair" and you'd see an alligator wearing sunglasses up on the wall. Wacky!

That is the same joke we use.
As shinanigians, it's a "Irish Pub" so to speak. With a no waiters, I don't think we have any waiters in this town. No flair, just a another bar.
