My thought exactly. Who at Marvel got the brilliant idea of naming a talking pterodactyl after the one and only badass novel villain?

I believe it's more of an homage.

In the comic Karl Lykos is a LOTR fan, and chooses the name Sauron because of it.

It would've been a lot dumber if they just named him Sauron for no reason.

Didn't he used to wear an amulet around his neck? Frodo wore the ring around his neck. Maybe that's part of it all.

In (Uncanny) X-Men #60, during the origin flashback, Lykos is shown reading The Fellowship of the Ring. Then, when he transforms into Sauron, he says he's taking the name of Tolkien's character.

The guy with the amulet was Larry Trask, not Karl Lykos.
