A similar thread in the Marvel board got me thinking. As most of you know, icons are considered blasphemous in Islam. I showed a couple of muslim friends some X-Men comics, featuring Dust, and some JSA comics (especially Black Reign), featuring Black Adan. The casual Muslims said they didn't like comics, so I don't think they cared. But the devout ones, including my brother, claimed it was haram to feature a Muslim in comics. I even asked the local Muslim scholar in the area. Initially, he told me it was haram as well, but then I told him that they weren't based on real people. He got flustered, and I didn't get a real answer. So, are Muslim and Arabic charecters in comics "politically correct?"

Black Adam isn't Muslim. He's Arabian, but his religion is Egyptian.

EDIT: Oh, and until a Muslim comic book character does or says something stereotypically negative, it's "politically correct."

Kampung Boy by Lat (http://www.firstsecondbooks.com/kampungBoy.html) is a very famous semi-autobiographical comic by a Malaysian Muslim.

I wasn't aware that it was that well known outside these parts. Have you read it?

The Ayatollah Komeini turned up in Death in the Family.

Or isn't that what you meant?

in Gen13 vol.3, one of the main characters was muslim and the one subplot dealt with how he and his family were treated after the events of 9/11

I'm not Aaron, and I haven't read it yet, but it's on my list--that company brings a lot of great comics from other parts of the world into the US, and I haven't been disappointed by anything from them yet.

this reminds me, I was reading a comic blog, themed around women (the URL escapes me at the moment), and they showed some recent Marvel comics feature, I think, the "Dust" muslim character MOrrison introduced (though it was a post-morrison appearance i think).

They showed some panels that made a big showing of her talking about how she chose to continue wearing her full body viel/dress for modesty and to avoid the lusty eyes of others or some such thing. Ok, fair enough, respecting beliefs and all that..

then a few panels it shows her standing there, and her body veil is completely skin tight, showing her full form, shape of her ass, tits, etc etc, essentially as tight as any superheroine costume. It was hilarious, and a bit sad.

Even when the story AND character AND character's openly stated in dialogue religious beliefs all call for her not be portrayed like a porn star, she still was! Only in comics! *laughs* but i guess that's a different issue kind of.

This is starting to sound a bit like the fear that cameras will steal your soul.
