View Full Version : "If it's sausages, it must be Ramadan" - Muslim assimilation in England

Nice little story in The Guardian about Ramadam, Muslim eating habits, and assimilation. I figure the muslims on the board will be interested about how things are going down in England (and I'd be interested to hear their take).
And I figure Morts will be interested on the level of the halal/kosher aspect, too.
If it's sausages, it must be Ramadan. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/g2/story/0,,1891499,00.html)
On an average day, I grab a slice of toast before I run out of the door to work. But during Ramadan, the prospect of not eating from sunrise to sunset drives families to get up early and sit down together to a hearty cooked breakfast to stave off the hunger pangs. And in the past few years, I've noticed some changes in the items gracing the breakfast bar: baked beans, sausages and hash browns have crept on to the menu.
Last Ramadan, I couldn't find a halal sausage for love or money. I scoured the specialist butchers, peered into supermarket chiller cabinets and visited practically every purveyor of Islamic meats in the city, to no avail. During my quest for artery-clogging bangers filled with Islamically acceptable meats such as chicken, lamb or beef, it suddenly dawned on me what was to blame for my sausageless situation: assimilation.

Ehwha? What's halal sausages being heavily bought got to do with cultural assimilation?

Read the story. It's about there not being any to be found. Apparently English muslims have gone native, and now it's about pies and pizza.

I think its because they're eating a traditional English breakfast (sausage, beans, toast, etc.) instead of a more Asian breakfast.

I'm just not seeing how there's a mass of assimilation because they like eating sausages.

No no no. The halal sausage is apparently traditional. (Cactus -- is this true?; cause I don't have a clue).

And I believe it, because the best English breakfast I've had in years was at a notionally Muslim caff round the back of the Tower of London.

No no no. The halal sausage is apparently traditional.
So, the fact that. during Ramadam, a traditional halal food goes flying off the shelves and you can't find them anywhere means there's be assimilation?

What's with the mushrooms?
I have no clue. But apparently the Wiki article says that they're included as one of the mainstay ingredients.

It's about as traditional as pizza is. The closes equivalent to a suasage is a seekh kebab which is different altogether.
I'm not sure what the point of the story is. Asian breakfasts (fried eggs, omelettes, jam on toast, cereal etc) are the same in the UK and the subcontinent. It's inevitable people will eat a lot of the same food when they're in a particular country. It doesn't have much to do with cultural assimilation at all.

Well, the story is that they weren't on the shelves in the first place. I think.

Outside of pubs and cafe's, I've never actually eaten or seen anyone eat a breakfast like that. I usually just go with toast.

What's with the mushrooms?
They taste good.
You just drop them in the fry pan along with everything else.

Hmm......looks like a typical English breakfast I've had, except remove the tomatos, beans, mushrooms, and possibly eggs and add more fried meat. Lots more fried meat.

I'm puzzled by this story, it's as if the author has just sussed out that Muslims eat sausages other than halal.

as far as i'm aware things like english breakfast are eaten and cooked on sundays by joe public, but if you fancied one but couldnt be arsed cooking it, then you can get them from a greesy spoon cafe.
bacon and sausage buttys are more likely to be eaten rather than a full breakie.

Can i just say that mushrooms and Black Pudding have no place in a Full English. They taste like shit! I mean, do you really want to eat fried congealed pigs blood for breakfast?

To be fair to them, the Muslims who are celebrating Ramadan aren't going to be eating for the rest of the day. So I wouldn't be surprised if they go whole hog, at least while Ramadan is on.

Somehow I don't think "hog" is quite the right word here.
