Hero: Dr. Midnite, although that should change once JSA gets up and running. Last I saw of him was a cameo in MANHUNTER a little while back.

Villain: Lex Luthor, with Ra's al Ghul as a close runner-up.

I took limbo to mean "not presently being used regularly or having any kind of recurring role." Luthor's 52 appearances take place in the past, technically. If I'm splitting hairs too much with that distinction, I'll go with Ra's instead.

Luthor was in Superman OYL with the kryptonite man and toyman and not to mention that big Kryptonian spaceship out of the ground...nothing close to limbo.

I'd like to see Geoffrey from JLE, the blue guy they found in the sand....

What's why I added "currently" at the end. The Superman OYL storyline ended back in June and Lex was then scuttled into character limbo while Lana Lang replaced him afterwards as Lexcorp CEO, indicating that Lex wouldn't be back for a while. Prior to that he had always been a strong recurring character in the Supes titles. But I'll give you that he might not count since he is currently appearing in 52 and go with Ra's instead (who's been dead/in limbo since DEATH AND THE MAIDENS).

I don't think characters who just had a large arc devoted to them less than half a year ago can be considered to be in limbo.

My favourite citizens of Limbo?

Not really DC, but Ben Santini and his Stormwatch team.

And also Sand (which is a shame considering he'sa founding member of the modern JSA) and last but not least, Darkseid.

Favourite limboized plotline: Huntress, agent of Checkmate.

First one that came to my mind is Doctor Midnight. Even though he's still around a bit, I still consider that Limbo. All he does is stand around in a surgeons mask. When he was first introduced he had all this fighting talent combined with medical knowledge designed to mess his enemies up. He was a front line fighter.

I don't remember the last time they actually had him DO something. They don't treat him like a superhero, just another doctor.

I also would add Original Hourman, but he's got an appearance in the new JSA Classified. it'd be nice to see him in costume. Always liked him better than Rick.

Yeah, that was the hero I listed, too. Since JSA ended (and even before that, actually), his only meaningful appearance was running a paternity test in MANHUNTER in a cameo. But I hope he might get an upturn when the new JSA starts up. I really like the Matt Wagner-created Pieter Cross incarnation of Dr. Midnite.

And Superman OYL wasn't "devoted" to Luthor by any means; if anything it was laying the groundwork for sending him into character limbo for a long stretch while reestablishing Superman as DC's premier superhero, who the arc was actually devoted to. But again I'll concede that Lex's role in 52, while happening in the past, still probably disqualifies him.

Word

I also have to add here:

Hawkman; Can someone please explain to me why he was removed and replaced with Hawkgirl?

Huntress; one of the coolest most fiercely independent women in comics books. Reduced to the role of third wheel of a 'high school clique'.

Talia Head; Highly nuanced, complex woman. Neither angel nor devil. Now reduced to one dimensional bitch on wheels.

Superboy. I like Conor he was so cute. And less annoying that his older cousine. There was so much potential there.

Superman....well hey.....what can possibly be said that hasn't been said before.

The Midnighter. I don't tend to like 'roughnecks' as characters. But there was something roguish about him I liked a lot. Like one poster said the Midnighter was like 'Fonzie'. He didn't give a damn what you thought of him. Now he's the poster boy for political correctness.

However thanks to Marv Wolfman, I don't have to add Nightwing to this list.

The whole cast of L.E.G.I.O.N. (Marij'n in particular)

Vril Dox is supposed to have a huge role in the Omega Men mini coming out soon, Captain Comet is starring in Mystery in Space, and Lobo has a very big role in 52. I would like to see what Garv and Garryn Bek are up to, though.

Tim Hunter, although technically Vertigo, comes to mind for me. Life During Wartime had become one of my most anticipated books every month before it was cancelled. He was also doing a lot of universe-hopping during that series, so you never know in this new age of wild magic...

It's funny, but most of my favourite limbo character have recently returned. The Question, Adam Strange, Animal Man, Zatanna, Donna Troy. The JSA is about to return, so its all good there.

As for characters still in limbo, The Demon needs to return, as do the New Gods and Forever People.

Hey, I don't need a wiki reference to know who Callan is. :)

I miss Cleve from "Bloodhound." Something about his sense of bleak humor got to me. At this point, I'm just glad he's not dead or a villain, like others I miss.

It was good to see Harvey Bullock back in Batman's supporting cast.

I agree with you there. The great Matt Wagner miniseries is what made me a big fan of the Pieter Cross Doc Midnite. Shame he doesn't get more playing time and development in the JSA and DC universe in general.

I agree with XS. Was it ever decided what her status is in canon since DC determined the Legion she appeared with came from an alternate universe?

Wally West was the most successful legacy/replacement character in DC history, so they had to go replace him and put him in some weird limbo state.

Linda Danvers , definitely .She could come back as new Supergirl's mentor , or let her have the Supergirl title and let new Supergirl have the Legion title , or give Linda a new heroic identity and let her join the Outsiders , whatever , just bring my girl Linda back !

I'd say the Shade. Although he's at least in the not-unpleasant limbo of having had his story conclude (for now, at least) in a satisfactory way.

While her having another ongoing (written by Brubaker!) would be a dream come true it could be worse. She's in one of DC's best titles and written by one of DC's best writers: Gail!

Thank god DC nixed the idea of Devin Grayson using Huntress in her Nightwing run. Huntress was originally going to have Tarantula's role!
