Remember that wide-eyed and deranged woman who ran out on her own wedding, then lied about being abducted and raped? She's back in the news this time, suing her ex-fiancee for a half million dollars! After her bizarre adventure, there were some reasonable questions about the intelligence of her fiancee, who bravely stayed with her. Now it's clear, that guy should have dumped her immediately. Instead, he stuck around and apparently tried to exploit the situation for financial game. Fool.

Some excerpts:

"Jennifer Wilbanks is seeking $250,000 as her share of a home she says John C. Mason purchased through the partnership with proceeds from $500,000 received for selling their story to Regan Media in New York.

"She also wants $250,000 in punitive damages for alleged abuse of the power of attorney she granted for Mason to handle their financial affairs.

"The lawsuit says the $500,000 was put into an account of JCM Consulting, based in Gwinnett County. After Wilbanks was “hospitalized and under medication,” Mason bought a home in Dacula in his name with the money, the lawsuit alleges.

"Wilbanks disappeared four days before her planned April 30, 2005, wedding. Hundreds of police and volunteers searched for her for three days before she called Mason from Albuquerque, N.M., claiming to have been abducted and sexually assaulted.

"She later recanted, saying she fled because of unspecified personal issues, and pleaded no contest to telling police a phony story.

"She was sentenced to two years’ probation and performed community service that included mowing the lawns of public buildings."

I don't know. Doesn't the article say he got half a million from it and bought a house from it?

Yeah, I need more information. Was the book a joint effort, of sorts? Was there any agreement of profit-sharing? And if he really did take her back and forgive her, that sort of implies that buying the house would have been a joint venture. Indeed, the $500K might be, as well.

I'd still have buried the bitch in the desert, and think he was stupid to take her back.

But I'm thinking there's a lot more to this than I can get out of that article.

If they didn't get married she doesn't deserve to get squat. This continues to show how deranged this woman is. Maybe someone can find a way to get her committed or something. Also who would want to read about this b.s. in a book. She was gone for four days what interesting thing could have happend in that period of time that warrants a book?

She also gave him power of attorney.

Judging from the language of what is posted, I don't think there is a book at all--it seems that it's just the rights to the story that's in question.

Ah! Ok. But it still begs the question: What/whose rights did the $500K cover and who signed on the dotted line?

Since he had power of attorney, and the money was put into a company it looks he created specifically for this, I'd say he probably signed on the dotted line.

Agreed. Now let's get to the "what/whose story." If it's for *his* story, from his perspective, then what part of it even requires her power of attorney?

I think you are allowed to profit if you are the victim, and an argument could definitely be made that this guy was victimized by the Runaway Bride.

See, that's the whole crux of what I asking in re this article. If he got paid $500K (no matter how ludicrous) for his version of the story, why does she have a claim?

Now if the payment was also a contract for HER side of the story, obtained while he had right of attorney, she might have a case.

She needs to just suck it up and accept that this is her karmic payback for the shit she pulled before.
