Let me start by saying that I know this exact same thread is posted by me in Marvel.

Basically, I have way, way too many subscriptions and I need to cut down on what I am buying each month, so that I actually have money for things like food and shelter, which render me able to enjoy the plentiful bounty of books I read.

What are the very best books Marvel is putting out right now, and how far back should I go with each title?

Also, great looking books coming out in the near future?

I'd really appreciate any help I can get.

And I'll also say that goddamn 52 hurts the wallet.

In no particular order:

All Star Superman
Superman
Action Comics
Batman
Detective
Fables

EDIT: Almost forgot Birds of Prey

How far back? I'd say start after the OYL stuff on Bats/Detective. There's some good stuff happening over there right now. For the Superman titles, if I had to read just one, it would be AS, but Action's pretty good right now too...

You might also want to keep JLA. It's a little slow building up, but well written. If you don't like it, I believe it gets a new writer issue #13.

I actually realized going through Previews this month that there is very little in DC that I find interesting. It's pretty much down to Teen Titans and 52 for regular reads, with inquiries about other supposedly good mags. Maybe with the return of Mon-El, Legion regain some kind of good.

Checkmate!!!! My new favorite book!

All Star Superman-Pick up all 5 issues.
Jonah Hex-A three issue arc that tells Hex's origin starts next issue(#13) a good jumping on point.
Batman-Pick up issues #655-657 and you'll be caught up.
Detective Comics-With the exception of #821 all the artists haven't been very good, but each issue is a stand alone so feel free to pick up whichever issues you like.

I agree with DubipR that you should pick up The Spirit when it starts.

I think my favorite stuff right now is all of the Green Lantern stuff, right before OYL it was starting to get boring but now it is great. Thats GL, GL:Corps, and Ion. Also I am loving 52, I don't think I would buy a book just focusing on one the stories but the fact that I am getting three of four stories per issue is pretty cool and all of them are fairly entertaining.

Catwoman and Supergirl. Wonderful characterisations. Truly enjoyable reads.

Justice - This thing is just epic. It's non-continuity, but it's the DCU at its best.

Seven Soldiers - The delays have sucked ass, but the last issue will be out this month and the trades are definitely worth picking up. Wonderful complexity, characterization, plot, and artwork thrown together in one awesome event!

All-Star Superman - The first three issues were simply amazing - Superman at his best and without the constraints of a perfect continuity. I think the last two issues have shown a drop in storytelling quality though.

Detective Comics - Paul Dini is doing some masterful work with Batman's rogues gallery, making tired old villains exciting and new again. No Batman fan should miss this one.

Sadly, those are the only "Must Reads" from DC, in my opinion. My sig will tell you everything I'm reading, but I wouldn't highly recommend any of the others.

None of these are exactly monthly, but each of these are always the first comics I read when they come out:

All Star Superman -- the best Superman stories in many years.

Justice -- a Challenge of the Superfriends fan's wet dream

Green Lantern -- this is a very good time to be a GL fan

Finally someone mentioned it!

Justice(epic in every way,Ross is on his a-game)
Justice League of America(the JLA doesn't always have to be mindless action and Meltzer proves this)
Superman(Busiek's run with Pacheco is 3 issues in and has been packed with goodness,he said it himself, his goal is to make Superman,Superman again,I'd prefer this rather than Action)
Detective Comics(done in ones,nuff said)
All Star Superman(a great new look at Supes)
Green Lantern(Rebirth was mindblowing and everything starting with #7 has been amazing,I can hook you up with the HC collecting the first 6 issues if you want :D)

Look out for Superman Confidential,JSA,The Spirit,Spirit/Batman

ASBAR is the crap everyone says it is.

I second this.

I don't think that Morrison's Batman is so much overrated as you have to read it with a different mindset. What you are reading is a different kind of story than you are expecting.

That's what happens when you bring a story that has been out of continuity for years back into continuity.

I actually used to get Green Lantern.

I bought the hardcover of Rebirth, then the first 10 issues of Johns' run, but I wasn't impressed at all. It really didn't shed any new light on the character that I couldn't get from reading an outline of him on Wikipedia.

I may check out Detective Comics, but I tend to steer away from Legends of the Dark Knight. I've gone back to it 3 times over the past 5 years and every time I have been seriously underwhelmed.

Regarding All Star Superman...love the writing...hate Superman's costume.

Legends of the Dark Knight is one of my favorite series. Essentially because it is a series of mini series. And almost all of them are not bound by continuity because they are not in continuity so authors have a lot of freedom.

Batman, on the whole, has the best non-continuity stories.

Keep an eye out for Superman Confiedential then.Cooke and Sale will make a great combination.

This is the first time I've ever read GL,so I guess that's why I'm enjoying it more than ya.

Dini's 'Tec issues have been great. They've all been done-in-ones which is a rarity these days.Plus, they're really shedding new light on Bat's rogue gallery.
