Can someone tell me what issues of what magazines did Dick Grayson temporarily take over as Batman?

The trade is called Prodigal... I don't know issue numbers. THe trade is also out of print. I'd check used book stores with a comic section.

it started in Batman #512, and it ran in other titles as well, but I don't remember which ones or the reading order.

It happened right after Knightfall (Bruce takes the mantle away from Azrael and takes a leave to find himself). As I remember it, Dick Grayson takes over as Batman and the Prodigal series is more of an event that spans all the Batman issues. It has to do with Two face as the main Villian.

Now that I think of it, I never knew what Bruce did during his absense. Anyone know if it was ever mentioned again?

He made up a brand new way to dance - oh no wait, that was Jonah Lewie in the kitchen at parties....

He designed a costume, but no-one had a clue what the new one looked like when it was unveiled because Kelly Jones was the artist.

It was a crap reason for a creap storyline

My understanding is, he used the time to create/build 'satelite' caves around Gotham City.

Yeah, that's what I gathered. I think it had ridiculously long ears.

As far as I can remember (from the issues that followed) they took away the pants, gloves and boots so he was in grey (or maybe black) all over with the costume being a lot more seamless

I know that there's the whole flagship character thing and that DC doesn't think the general public would accept a non - Bruce Batman in the regular comics. But, I would love to see Dick take over the mantle. It would put a fresh spin on the books, and I don't really think the genreal public would really care. There'd still be a Batman to put on Pez and lunch boxes and party hats. And they've switched up characters successfully with Flash and Green Lantern (before they sissed out and brought Hal back), so why not try it out on Batman in a more long term story-line commitment?

I'd actually like to see that to. Mainly to see how Dick and Tim would work together as Batman and Robin. I think they should either do an Elsworlds mini-series or maybe like a OYL type thing where they start a run with Dick being Batman in the future while still keeping Bruce as Batman in current continuity. After all, he can't be Batman forever, he'll eventually get too old.

could work. But what about Bruce? Where would he be?

If they ever decided to make it in continuity, and I hope they don't do it ever, they should wait for the next big DCU event, and have Batman die in the most heroic way possible, and keep him dead, don't bring him back.
After that, yeah, Dick can be Batman, but I hope it never happens.

No don't kill of Wayne, it's stupid no one can be a new Batman for real.
So much of "Batman" is his personality, his tragic past, it's not just the costume.
And i hope Grayson never become Batman, he is his own man now.

I'ts bound to be a failure to do this.

I thought Dick didn't want to be Batman.

I'd read an elseworlds where Dick became Batman for whatever reason, but if it was in continuity, I'd probably drop Batman.

I don't read Nightwing, because I don't like adult Dick Grayson much.

It could be that despite being a dark, brooding figure of the night, Bruce Wayne is fairly maleable as a character - and arguably moreso than most any other superhero around. Whereas other big name heroes are pretty set in their personalities - ie. you couldn't have Spider-Man become violently psychopathic without putting someone other than Peter Parker in the costume or the Punisher becoming light hearted while remaining Frank Castle -you can alter the frequency on which Bruce Wayne operates. If you want a lighter or darker Batman you can do so without replacing Bruce Wayne.

Actually much earlier than PRODIGAL in Batman #353-355 when Bruce is shot during a political crisis in Gotham, Dick assumes the mantle of the Bat and performs admirably, exposing the corrupting influence of former councilman Rupert Thorne and kicking butt in the process.

Dick's performance in the case coupled with the rebelliousness and restlessness of the past year as a Titan convince Bruce that Batman’s presence and Dick’s Robin persona are holding the young man back from his full potential--Grayson later goes on to become Nightwing.;)

I don't know if it'll be Dick that becomes the next Batman, more likely we'll see Tim take the job. But I mean, I seriously doubt it'll happen, atleast in continuity. These kind of things just happen around Batman, like Dick becoming Nightwing, Jason getting killed, Tim becoming Robin, etc. Batman himself never really evolves.

Like someone said Dick as been Batman several times already and proven more than anyone that he can fill the boots just fine. I would like to see more Grayson/Drake dynamic duo fights as well because they seem to be the best bat-family team.
