The first episode has just finished and it was *outstanding*. Very well written, loads of fun and a raise the hackles on your arms moment towards the end. Robin was fab. Guy Of Gisbourne (last seen in BBC1's fabulous parisienne darama 'The Impressionists') was suitably dark and Marion strong and bretahtaking.
*LOVED* it.
The trailer for Dr Who spin-off Torchwood after it looked superb too.
Happy days!

The new Robin Hood started a little slowly but got going before the end of the first episode.
Pretty good stuff. I'll be back watch it on the beeb next week.

Literally by the folk behind the new Doctor Who, as in the specific creative team?
Because if we're talking the Season Two folk, I'm kind of glad I missed it.

As far as I know its a bunch of the same writers for sure, not sure about producers.
I enjoyed Season 2 of Dr Who more than Season 1 I must admit.

But is it as good as the Pagans R Us Clannad themed one from the 80's?

Yeah sure the singer was Enya's sister, y'know the one who turned bathtime warbling into a career.
It's out on dvd actually and yes I have a copy :o

Good man! The Michael Praed version is still the best Robin Hood that I have ever seen (yes I own those DVDs too).
As for tonights show, it was good in places but poor in others. Robin seems decent if a little bland, Much is flat out annoying, the other Merry Men were annonymous. Gisbourne was absolutely spot on and Keith Allan was obviously having fun as the Sheriff. IMO the jury is out on Marion. The plot was slow with not a lot happening in the first 20 minutes and the scene with the ditch digger and his daughter was flat out embarrasing. However the action at the end was fast paced and exciting.
Overall it shows some promise but it could be better and will really have to improve if it is to better Robin of Sherwood. After all "Nothing is forgotten, Nothing is ever forgotten

How well does it stand up against Maid Marian And Her Merry Men? ;)

Who could be finer than the lovely Judi Trott?

Which probably is why it sounded like someone yawning over a keyboard.

I'm sorry, but Mel Brooks has spoiled all other Robin Hoods for me.

I'm sorry, but Mel Brooks has spoiled all other Robin Hoods for me.
He did that to me in 1975 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072585/).
"Once upon a time when things were rotten
Not just food, but also kings were rotten
Everybody kicked the peasants.
Things were bad and that ain't good
Then came Robin Hood
Soon a band of merry men he'd gotten.
They wore outfits made of plain green cotton.
Helping victims was their business.
Boy oh boy was business good.
Good for Robin Hood
They laughed, they loved, they fought, they drank.
They jumped a lot of fences.
They robbed the rich, gave to the poor,
Except what they kept for expenses.
So when other legends are forgotten
We'll remember back when things were rotten.
Yay for Robin Hood!

Errol's '38 effort is the best Bob Hood fillum I've seen.

A BBC Robin Hood? Nice. Does anyone know if this is going to make the jump to the states?
Oh yeah, and my vote for best Robin Hood either goes to the Disney animated version (I've had a soft spot for that since I was like 4) or the Errol Flynn '38 version.

It was '34 if I'm not mistaken. The tournament and a lot of the Sherwood Forset stuff was filmed at what is now my home archery range.
EDIT: I'm mistaken. It was '38.

Here's some trivia for ya !
The chain mail shirts worn by the 1938 movie cast were actually made of wool. Summer temps in Southern California during filming would've hospitalised/killed stars and extras.

Here's some more... the chain mail shirts worn by the extras in Lord of the Rings were made of PVC pipe sliced into rings and spray-painted silver.

In Monty Python and the Holy Grail they were knitted and painted silver.

Its a co-production between the BBC & BBC America, so i'd say they have high hopes for the series translating to the US well ^_^

Did anyone ever see the Yank version of Fawlty Towers starring John Larroquette in the " Basil " role ?
It was so bad, it may be considered entertaining.

Believe me you don't want it to jump to the US. Doctor Who, I can understand, it's really good and clever. This new Robin Hood was just god-awful. It tried to be Prince of Thieves at the start, literally copying the beginning of the film only to wuss out on it, the script was paper thin, the zip-thunk arrow sound effects to give location names were annoying and had me looking for someone shooting at the actors every time. Best quote I read about Robin was 'he had the charisma of a stamp collector and the charm of a second hand shoe-seller'
Pray it doesn't come to the US, seriously, it was lame. Wait for Torchwood, the Doctor Who spin off, it looks awesome.

Yowch, thats too bad. Damn you BBC! I guess I'll catch it if its on, but I won't actively look for it.
I've never really had a chance to get into Dr. Who much, though everyone who has seen rants and raves about how much I would love it. I really needs to get me a TiVo.
Chances are it would be on at a really weird time or very inconsistently like most of the BBC shows I enjoy a bunch on BBC America. I'd pick them up on a DVD, but the Region 1 versions are either way too expensive for what they have (like the Black Books and My Family sets that have 6 episodes for 25$) or don't exist (like Spaced).

Ooo deee laaaa leeeee!
Yeah, that spoiled me as a kid. Sometimes I get that "Every town, has its ups and downs.." song stuck in my head.
Never got into the Costner one later on.
As for this BBC one? I haven't even checked out this new version of Dr Who. Though I keep hearing raves about it.
One BBC show I have checked out, is the documentary Japanorama with Johnathan Ross. Upon looking up that show's site, I saw links about Robin Hood.
I also kept hearing about Hex. I saw an ep on BBC America, but couldn't get into it.
edit: Oh yeah I had a friend who kept raving about Ghormenghast when it came out years ago.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!
I know, as a Brit, I should support British TV, but I dont watch 80% of it, because its just crap. Hex was....as bad as the new Bobbin Hood (yes Bobbin, as in slang for a load of rubbish). Hex came out just as Buffy finished and they said it was Britain's answer to Buffy. No. No it wasn't. The only thing it had in common was there was a young female lead, apart from that, all resemblances end. Ugh, awful stories, wooden actors, lovely locations and great camera work, sound, etc, shame about the rest.
We can do crime quite well though, check out Cracker if you can, Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid for you Potter people) as a massively messed up man who is a psychologist who helps the police, he was our answer to House before House existed. Glad Hugh Laurie is doing so well over there by the way, most people think he's American!
Both new Doctor Who's have been good, David Tennant is excellent, despite my initial worries about him replacing Christopher Eccleston, he is fabulous. Definitely try and get it if you can.

This is the first time I've heard of new Robin Hood series, so I just checked out the web-site.
I was a fan of the old series from the 80's. Nazir was the best thing about it. But it was some time ago, so I don't know how well it has aged.
At any rate...
The new cast seem a bit...young. Maid Marion looks like a little girl.
But things may be different once seen on screen.
