I just finished editing it. Of course, it was recorded in two parts and I have yet to figure out how to merge the two parts in Garageband. That's tomorrow's first To Do item.

The whole chit chat between Jamie and I lasts almost exactly one hour long.

Wow. We do so go on.

More tomorrow.

bring one file into the other and select SHARE. Garage band will compress them into the same mp3 or aiff file.

I found the problem was that I could copy-and-paste a track from one file to another, but that the master volume changes wouldn't be carried over with them. So I just redid that on the back half and all is good now.

The podcast is up! Download all 27 meg now, everyone!

So how much do you guys spend in an average month?

Augie De Blieck Jr.
10-09-2006, 12:24 PM
I can look that up when I get home, but I know it's less than I've spent in years now. Part of that just comes as occupational "hazards" -- comp copies -- but other parts come from more judicious spending habits. My weeks at the comics shop lately range from $15 to $60, but seem to be settling down around the $30-$40 mark lately. Every now and then there'll be a week with two hardcovers and I'll spike up to $90 or so, but that's not that often anymore, thanks to the glory of Amazon.

I listened to the Indie Spinner Rack Dave Sim interview and the newest iFanboy podcast yestedray. I think I can make it through this one.

Should I have my copy of Previews open when I listen to this? Do you just go over the comics section, or do you get into the really back part with the books and toys and magazines and such?

You don't really need to have it open, but we do reference a bunch of items. It's not a page by page recap, but instead we talk about topics that inspired us as we looked Previews over. And it is more than just about the comics section. We touch on statues, toys, and posters to name a few. :D

That's not too bad.

I've been averaging over $100 a week (after DCBS discount:eek: ) but I'm in the process of cutting back big time. I've basically cut the amount I'm getting almost in half.

pmpknface
10-09-2006, 02:00 PM
I guess I generally drop in the low $200's in a month from DCBS with weekly shipping, sometimes a little higher. I also buy a handful of titles (10-12?) from my local shop.

If you count in busts and statues that I buy, I've recently been pre-ordering them even cheaper than I can get through DCBS so that $'s somewhat seperate. But I'll get 1 or 2 mini-busts a month on average.

AND - Aside from that I play on ebay a bit or dive into back issue bins, so I may drop a few bucks that direction each month too.

I don't have access to it now, but I'll post a month's complete order later. If you want to see a sample of what we buy each week check out any thread on this board that has "Shopping List" in it! :D

Great job on the podcast, guys. It was nice to hear some back and forth interaction. Plus, you both approach previews differently and we (the listener) get more from the podcast due to that. Maybe you could do this with every Previews?

Just checking the spreadsheet I keep -- it looks like my weekly comics take is about $15-$30 before any trades or hardcovers. Obviously, one of those would double the spending, just about.

13th - Thanks. Doing this again in the future is a definite possibility. I'm looking at other ways to bring even more people into the podcast, too, but we'll see how that goes in the next couple of weeks. . .

I get my books from DCBS and highly recommend them. They do a great job getting me my comics. The 40% off for the main publishers with DCBS is really great discount.

Here is most of what I've been getting recently... (http://www.comicbookpage.com/NewComics/WeeklyShipments.php?Year=2006)

I'm in the process of trying to cut back on my spending due to some financial concerns. That and I'm just getting too damn many comics books. Last week I got 30 comics and the week before I got 40. I'm filling a short box a month and need to slow that down substantially as I'm starting to run out of space to put them.

Augie De Blieck Jr.

I think we need to stage an intervention for you, John. =)

The worst I got up to, I think, was a couple dozen comics in a week. That wasn't a regular occurence, but it happened every now and then. The running gag at the comic shop at that point was, "Can I pay by the pound?"

In your case, though, I'm glad to hear you're using DCBS or you'd be living under a bridge by now.

When I was single I did this. I spent probably $50-75 a week because I bought nearly EVERYTHING. I "collected" most of it too. These days I'd love to spend that same about (now that I'm married) but can't. I don't collect anymore either. I hate eBay and I'm considering opening up a small online shop just to sell off books so I can pick up new ones only to read them (maybe review them) and the sell them. Its my own comic book recylcing program. Now, if I could ever get it to work.

John,

Love the site! You're really a believer in those stacking boxes, huh? Aren't then expensive? One thing I didn't think of with them is that you've got 200 in each and a long box can take 300+. I've gotta have 20-30 or so long boxes in my comic room.

The first thing I did when thinking of cutting back is wait for a tpb. However I'm still a sucker for Marvel stuff.

Augie De Blieck Jr.
10-10-2006, 11:22 AM
Those DrawerBoxes are wonderful things, Jamie. They are expensive, but they're amazing organizational tools. If you have a limited amount of space, being able to stack them six high will mazimize the space's potential.

I need to buy more, but I've yet to get around to it.

Good podcast guys. Certainly better to listen you go on about comics than to listen to whoever it is calling the Tigers game. No hidden gems in the indie section though? That's what I always look for in "Previews" previews.

Hand's down, "essential" is better than "omnibus," but only cause I don't have enough money to justify buying the "Uncanny X-men" or "Eternals" omnibus. It seems like most of the Omnibus or Absolute versions are triple or quadruble dips. How many different versions of "Dark Knight Returns" or "Sandman" do we really need? "Eternals" seems to be the only stand out where it's something that hasn't been seen in a while and deserves a big fat book. Aren't they doing a big fat color Kirby's "Fourth World" book?

Anyway, good podcast, hope to hear another one in a month.

I'm in the process of cutting my buying in half. The DCBS discount helps a lot but it still eats up a lot of time, space and cash.

The wake up call was the company I'm working at going into a tailspin. Still not sure if it will pull out or not but it made me reassess what I'm getting and why. I'll probably be dropping more titles going forward. And I think I'm officially joining the "waiting for the trade" for a number of things with the caveat that I' might not get the trade.

The first thing I did when thinking of cutting back is wait for a tpb. However I'm still a sucker for Marvel stuff.

The Drawer Boxes are great. They hold about 235 comics. They were a bit expensive but are worth it. I can get to everything in my collection without having to restack boxes. And they are only an inch or two shorter than long boxes. So, while you'll lose a little storage space, the accessibility makes up for it in my opinion.

I've cut out a ton of indy books as well as the newly rebooted Wildstorm universe and the MC2 titles. I'm curious about the Squadron Supreme/Ultimate unvierse crossover which is the only thing that saved most of those titles from getting cut.

At this point the next things to cut are Marvel and DC universe titles. And I'm relucant to stop getting titles I've got 20 to 25 year runs of. Stupid reason to keep getting some stuff but at least I'm willing to admit that is why I'm still getting things like Hawkgirl. I figure that it will change directions within the next few months.

Good job guys! While it didn't necessarily get me to add anything to my wish list for December, it did make for an interesting hour. I'd be willing to give it another listen if you guys choose to make this a regular feature.

About that Invincible poster, when I first saw it in the solicits, I really, really, really wanted to get one. Then I remembered that I'm no longer 16 years old, which I think is the last time that I bought a comic related poster. Thinking back, I can only remember ever owning two of them in my life - a Spider-man one and an X-men one. The spidey poster was definitely by Todd McFarlane. It was a replica of the Spider-Man #1 cover, only with a gold background/webbing. The other poster was by Jim Lee (wow - is it hard to tell that I came to comic age in the late 80s/early 90s?). I vaguely remember it. Brown background, probably a tryptich (sp?), and the main characters were Havok in the background with Wolverine, Jubilee & Psylocke in the foreground. I wonder if those are still sitting at my parents house stuffed in some closet?

I also find it interesting that you guys talk at length about Mike Wieringo. It's a shame that his run on FNSM was so short. I had high hopes for the title, but launching it during "The Other" storyline was a waste of PAD and his talents. From his blog, you could infer for a while there that 'Ringo wasn't happy to be on the book after Mark Waid left. I am very interested to know what is next for him. Marvel? DC? Tellos? One can always wish - he has had some related sketches on his blog lately. All I do know is that I went out and picked up the first 7 issues of Ms. Marvel off eBay recently in anticipation of his guest stint on the book here shortly. The cover (with gorgeous colors from Chris Sotomayer?) to his first issue absolutely sealed the deal for me!

I've been averaging about $96/month this year. It'll be interesting to see what those numbers will be at the end of the year as I have been slowly purging books over the past couple of months.

Btw, nice website John. You and Jaime should compare notes to see who's vault is bigger!

Can I ask what you put down below all of the Drawer Boxes? More cardboard? Wooden planks?

JohnMayo
10-11-2006, 09:57 AM
I've got some metal frames that were originally intended to be the basis for shelving in the room until that the room wasn't big enough to build the shelves in and the door wasn't big enough to get them past. On top of the metal frames is 1/2 inch thich MDF boards. That keeps the boxes an inch or two off the carpet. That way is water gets into the room I don't have toworry about having the worlds largest impromptu paper mache display.

I'll think about the boxes. I'm just so tied to my long boxes.

I know I should be holding off on the Ultimate stuff for collections, but I just can't. I have every friggin' issue that's been published so it's hard to stop.

I have a few indy's that I get, but really most of that stuff I buy collected already. I have to stop diving into back issues and chill on the statues and busts. Then of course Bowen puts this out there:

Well, at least that's slimmed down to pretty much only Spider-Girl. There's a new Avengers mini out now, but that's a 1-5 that is destined for a digest. That's how I'll be getting it.

Spider-Girl is one I actually passed on and didn't start reading until #50. Now I get all the digests, until I get back up to that point. ;)
