Yes, it's an attempt (http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=local&id=4625303)to ban a book about banning books.

Careful with that kneejerk reaction, you could put somebody's eye out.

You know, as a doctor, AND a woman, I really have to tell you this, Karen ...

Women need more irony in our diets.

Can you believe what they've done to Irony Man in Civil War?!

I'm going to say it again, the hardcore religious right is going to drag America down as other countries whip past us. I'm sick of 'em. Let them go hang out with other fanatics.

They aren't as powerful as they are loud, so it's not that bad.

On a slightly related topic, Gail do you know the site, "Fundies Say the Darndest Things!"?

The problem with people like this family, is that their complaints are so iddiotic that when a group has a real religous objection nobody wants to listen. The first thought we all have is "Uh Oh Here Come The Nutters Again!"

I know irony! It's...when... something is kinda like iron. *Nods.* Ironish.

In all seriousness... just how stupid does a kid have to be if she's offended by "burning Bibles" in a book when the point of the book is "burning books, including Bibles, would be bad"? I mean, dang, if I was that girl's teacher I think I would have just put my head through the nearest window at that one.

it's just like the argument that anything with demons in it is automatically Satanic, even if the whole point of the thing is getting rid of said demons. people are just way too sensitive about some things.

Or when people get stoned just for saying "Jehova".

I would've just failed her the moment she placed the complain, telling her "Obviously, you didn't read the whole book and get the point of the damn story, which isn't about bashing God, but about bashing book burning. Therefore, you've failed the Assignment."

I find it a little scary that the school or the teacher were immediately willing to give a different reading assignment to a kid who stood the most to learn from Fahrenheit 451. Schools aren't there to further ignorance.

A-fucking-men, my friend. What's sad is the girl's father, who stated the book was "downgrading Christians" and "talking about our firemen". For someone who went through the book 'line by line, highlighting passages and providing page numbers' for his complaint, he damn sure didn't digest a single thing Mr. Bradbury was attempting to convey. (Lack of) Reading Comprehension FTL!

Nail on head, that's all I've gotta say.

MOTHERFUCKING SON OF A BITCH! I thought this was kinda funny and then I read the article. Some idiot tried to pull Fahrenheit 451 from a reading list. I wanna go down to Texas right now and punch that parent in the face. This is what the book is about. And if they bother to read books instead of burning/banning them, they'd realize the heros of the book are trying to preserve the Bible from a society that wants to ban it.

If you ask me, this parent should be arrested for child abuse. I don't know if you can proactively defend the first amendment, but this idiot is a danger to himself and his country.

Holy shit this has my blood boiling. 451 is like my second bible. I keep saying it's my favorite book. It instilled such a passion in me against censorship and a love of preserving all books... I'm actulally shaking as I'm typing this rant against this simpleton.

My God, you sir, are no Christian. You sure the hell can't understand the Bible if you can't even understand this book. You should be taken away as an unfit parent and for interfering with your child's basic education and trying to ban a classic American novel.

Holy shit that pisses me off. This shouldn't even be an issue in modern America. And shame on the school for caving in and not reaching out to these close minded people.

Hell, as a Christian I was touched by the whole thing about the Bible. Like I said, the book talks about preserving it! Also, isn't Bradbury fairly Christian? I at least never got a sense the book was attacking the Bible, but the exact opposite in fact.

The student deserves an F. Neither she nor the parents understand the lesson of the book or the entire week at all.

I saw Jesus Christ Superstar live tonight. Now I can nitpick it, but it wasn't bad. Certainly powerful, seeing Christ in front of your dying on the cross. I can't help but remember, "Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." How can God's people just be so ignorant of His glory? How can these people not see the beauty and wonder of this amazing book?

Heck, I just looked up the guy's address. I feel like, one Christian to supposedly another, writing the man a letter about how the books is very much FOR the Bible and all books.
