Green Lantern Beginner

I've never been a DC guy but I've been reading 52 and I love it and I just recently read the Identity Crisis trade. For some reason I feel drawn to green lantern and was wondering if there are any fans out there who could point me in a good direction as far as trades go.

The current series is only 14 issues so far, and I believe the first 6 issues were collected in GL: No Fear. This might be a good place to start.

There are a few trades that collect a lot of the pivotal moments in GL's life:

For earlier 60's appearances, you can't go past Showcase Presents Green Lantern. It covers a lot of issues for a cheap price, and sets up all the basics of the character.

GL's post-CoIE origin can be found in Emerald Dawn and Emerald Dawn II. If you're just looking for the basics, this is a good place to start.

There are 2 Green Lantern/Green Arrow trades covering the acclaimed early 70's run by Denny O'Neill and Neal Adams. These stories featured GL and his buddies travelling across America, dealing with social injustices. These were pretty groundbreaking stories, and are well worth reading, but I wouldn't start with them. The feel of these books is very different from the standard GL stories.

GL: Rebirth tells the tale of Hal Jordan's return to life, after turning evil, dying, and spending some time as the Spectre. It's a good read, and leads directly into the current series, but is continuity-heavy.

Brave and the Bold: Falsh and Green Lantern is a fun book, and details the friendship between Hal Jordan and Barry Allen. Not essential reading, just a really cool story.

I'd say, to start, grab Emerald Dawn and Emerald Dawn II where Keith Giffen does a sort of Year One for Hal. Then, of course, the Showcase volumes that collect some of Hal's Silver Age stories. DC needs to get on the ball and release DVD collections of decades of back issues. After those books, you should be familiar with Hal Jordan enough to read Emerald Twilight, which chronicles his fall. Now... if you're only interested in Hal Jordan, then the next one you're going to want to read is Final Night. If you're interested in the last Green Lantern, who was the only Green Lantern for a while, you'll want to pick up Green Lantern: A New Dawn.

After Final Night, you'll want to pick up Green Lantern: Rebirth, which will bring you up to speed enough to start reading the current series.

Darwyn Cooke's New Frontier is not only a great Hal Jordan origin story, but it is also an origin story for J'Onn J'Onzz, the Challengers of the Unknown and the Justice League of America.

I cannot recommend this story enough.

Try Green Lantern Corps: Recharge. You'll see many of the current Lantern characters as they try to re-establish and protect themselves.

Like everyone said Rebirth is amazing. I also recomend Justice League a new begining for a couple of great guy gardener moments. Zero Hour and Final Night are good unlike most people I liked the parallax angle. Also I recomend A new Dawn.

So I did a search and found this thread. I read New Frontier already, and I have Rebirth. I was thinking of getting Recharge. I want to start reading Green Lantern #1 and Green Lantern Corps #1, but I'm just curious how important Rebirth and Recharge are to the storyline. Should I wait to read those 2 books? Is one more important than the other?

Rebirth comes before Recharge.

Rebirth focuses pretty much on Hal Jordan, while Recharge serves as a starting point for the new Green Lantern Corps (space cops).

As far as right now is concerned, with the big Sinestro Corps war, both titles are equally important. Otherwise, depends. I personally would take GL Corps over GL.

Ok, I've started Rebirth. But I have a question. Since I plan to read both GL and GL Corps, do I need to also read Recharge before I start GL? I understand it is important to read before I start GL Corps. Just wondering if it applies to both titles.

Only if you go into Corps. Green Lantern can be read seperately till you get to the issue that says "Next : Sinestro corps war special" then you have to read all the GL Corps issues to where it says "Next : Sinestro Corps war special" then you can start the sinestro corps.

But yeah before starting corps, you should read recharge.

Well, Geoff Johns has been doing a spectacular job turning Green Lantern into a sort of Star Wars for the DCU. He's got this stellar, intergalactic war going on right now with the Sinestro Corps thats about to be wrapped up but the fun is all just beginning. There should be alot of cool things in store for GL and the GL Corps.
