View Full Version : How redundant are Spider-Man and Spider-Woman?

The two of them are VERY different Characters. Even their powers don't have much similiarity. Why Can't they both be there? The Spider-name?!?

Right; they're nothing alike. How are their powers so different besides her venom blasts? Both can even "fly" nowadays, too, thanks to Spidey's new suit.

Well, the whole gliding thing (and even the yellow-and-red color scheme) is a brand new development that incredibly, has actually been adopted by the male after the female (it's usually the female analogue who rips-off the male, right?)

I am not saying that their powers are absolutely, diametrically different, but their set of powers are also different enough, with certain overlapping factors.

Jessica and Peter both have wall-crawling abilities and the proportionate strength of a spider. They also share enhanced agility and flexibility.

Pete has a "sixth-sense" that alerts him of danger, Jessica has hyper-acute hearing that could help her avoid some sticky situations.

Pete can spin webs and shoot them from his hands, Jessica can generate venom and release it through her body's excess bio electricity.

Pete can glide, Jessica can fly (after Hydra's "enhancements")

Jessica releases mood-altering pheromones, Pete doesn't.

Thanks to both HYDRA and SHIELD Jessica has extensive training in espionage, stealth, guns and an undisclosed number of fighting techniques (courtesy of one of the MU's most "gifted" fighters, Taskmaster).

Peter doesn't (as far as I know...I am not that familiar with his entire history...)

But fundamentally, their personalities are absolutely different and they aren't even related by blood or bt her being a big fan or whatnot.

I don't know a lot about Spiderwoman so correct me if I'm wrong.

Powers

SpiderWoman.

FLight
Venom blasts
Wall crawling.
pheremones

Spider Man:
Wall Crawling
Webshooters
Spidersense
strength
perfect balance
Now he can talk to bugs
Spikes
Night vision

Personallity-wise

SW:
Shield Agent
Serious
Super-spy type
Single

SM:
Fun-loving (in theory)
married
Scientist
Everyman

All things considered the only similiarity I see are the Wall Crawling and the fondness of Red. Given the Parker luck with the ladies pheremones could make a good argument too ;)

The flight I forgot about, I really haven't seen him USE it. I thought Peter kept asking for Boot Jets but Tony kept saying No in a humorus scene. I thought he could just glide.

I thought of two things after reading this:

Spider-Man has seemingly copied two Spider-Women.

Spider-Woman is a more versatile character than Spider-Man, with powers/abilities beyond the similarities.

To be fair, Spider-Woman also has the strength and balance thing...

Oh, and another difference is that she has super-hearing and is immune to radiations, toxins and non-corrosive poisons after one exposure.

Yeah, I totally forgot her immunity to radiation...

I'll give you the personalities difference, but seriously, nobody is actually using the goofy "new" Spidey powers (nightvision, talks to bugs, bone claws), so their main powers (wall-crawling, enhanced physical abilites and senses) are pretty much the same, minus her venom blasts and pheremones. Hence she's fairly redundant minus her spy/secret agent background and willingness to kill. Oh right, they already have that, too, with Logan.

Isn't it funny that your first argument was that their poweres were the same, and now you make the distinction of only "their main powers...minus her venom blasts and pheremones"...?
It's fun to cherry-pick about our own arguments.

She is no more redundant than Wasp was when Yellowjacket was also part of the team.
And their "main" power was shrinking, correct?

Then again, I am not the writer of the book, and for good or bad, she is "Bendis' pet", which means she stays in the picture.

When I write the book, I will make sure to use my own pet characters and to use "non-redundant" characters in the team.

I will also make sure not to but the book if I hate it.

I haven't really seen Jessica use Strength or Agility that much. I mean Spiderman is often doing the bounce around and hit a dozen times, or balancing on one finger on a tightrope or something. I don't remember SW doing anything of that caliber. Not saying that she can't just that I didn't know she could.

If your only looking at those powers there then Daredevil and Nightcrawler would have been reduntant too they NC has the wall crawling and Agility while DD has Agility and senses.

I don't consider Spidersense to be on par with enhanced hearing. Just don't see them on the same page at all.

I will agree that if you take away the Venom blasts, the Pheromones, the secret agent/spy background and the license to kill.... she would be useless. But your taking away ALOT ;)

Yeah, yeah; point well taken, nosferUATU. I'll stop with the "having both Spider-Man and Spider-Woman on the team is redundant" posts, as they do have some character and ability differences and it's not like she's a female clone of Peter.
