The Monster of Frankenstein

I just found Dick Briefer's The Monster of Frankenstein for sale on on Amazon. Someone put together a graphic novel containing his classic Frankenstein horror comics from the 1950's (23 stories in total). Material is pre-CCA and a bloody good read.

I had no idea this was coming out-- I'd never even heard of BookSurge Publishing. Apparently it's a print-on-demand company.

The book looks very interesting and I'll be keeping an eye out for it. I just hope it doesn't have bad production values.

More thanks from me, Sand. I've wanted a collection of Briefer's serious Frankenstein since about 1971. Don Glut had a chapter in "The Comic Book Book" (an essential reference back in the pre-internet days, when historical material on old comics was hard to come by) about Frankenstein in the comics, with heavy emphasis on this series. I can't wait to order this book!

drwho, This book is a collection of the "Prize Comics" edition of the 40s and 50s. I do believe Marvel did an "Essential" (B&W) collection of the their comic series. Not sure about the Marvel magazine stories.:)

I remember that book well. I had it for Christmas one year. At the time it was one of three books I knew of about comics, viz and to wit:

The Comic Book Book
The Steranko History of Comics (in 'six' volumes)
Comics: Anatomy of a Mass Medium

I almost immediately twigged that there was another one, the Lupoff/Thompson edited All in Color for a Dime, and then heard of Comix by... Les Daniels? (a book reprinting Golden Age stuff - I think there was a Plas in there) and acquired the Penguin Book of Comics.

Don't get excited about The Penguin Book of Comics; it mostly deals with British material, does not know DC exists, and reprints a page of 'The Spirit' as an example of Eisner's mastery of storytelling techniques (this is entirely understandable in a book about comics, but it is useful if the page isn't ghosted by Lou Fine...).

Nowadays, of course, my love of comics has been entirely vindicated, and my shelves groan under a book on the history of the CCA and a book about EC including a cover reproduction of everything they published (except for the entire run of Mad, obv. - they just do the comics-format issues, IIRR).
