View Full Version : *nods to pennywisdom* Movies you love, in spite of their being hated

Like the thread topic says.. Some movies, one just loves in spite of everything, including the criticisms of other movie-goers.
For me, that includes the Matrix Sequals. In spite of seeing them getting torn by the movie fans online all the time, I still absolutely love them.

Oh, I love some movies despite some very obvious flaws... Mostly genre movies... let's see...
I love Event Horizon. It's not the best horror movie of all time, but I don't understand why it has such a bad reputation.
I liked The Fifth Element, mostly because it brought to the screen everything I liked about old Métal Hurlant comics.
I'm quite fond of Attack of the Clones, especially when the er... clones er... you know, finally attack. Though it doesn't compare to THX1138, which is one of my favorite movies, and which most people hate, apparently.
I thought Daredevil was pretty cool.
... and of course, I love Lost in Translation Sideways, Mullholland Drive and Fargo, but those are only hated here on CBR, so they don't count. ;)

Mannequin, its a nostalgia thing I guess. I watched it all the time when I was a kid. I never saw the sequel, so I can't comment on that one. Short Circuit was another good one. Steve Gutenberg is a genius.

The Fifth Element is hated? By who? That's a great movie, and the only time I've found Chris Tucker amusing post-FRIDAY.
Great picks, Mirrorball Man, and I like most of those, too (well, excluding Daredevil and Attack of the Clones), and I also share lonewolf23k's appreciation for the Matrix sequels (Reloaded moreso than Revolutions for me). I'll add David Lynch's DUNE, Cronenberg's EXISTENZ, the 1994 adaptation of THE SHADOW, and for comedies' sake throw in NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE. I could keep listing movies that I enjoy that the majority of viewers don't seem to, but then we'd be here all day. :D

Thirded. :evilsmile They could have done some things differently but I enjoyed the sequels.
Except for a very obvious flaw in the mecha design and Trinity's death scene I had no real problem with Revolutions.
The truce at the end makes sense because if Neo and Co. win what would have happened to the billions of pod humans who accepted the Matrix?

X-Men: Last Stand- Anyone who hated the movie can kiss my a$$. The movie was a fun action flick and I liked that the filmakers had the balls to at least attempt to kill off Xavier and Cyclops.

Oh, I love some movies despite some very obvious flaws... Mostly genre movies... let's see...
I love Event Horizon. It's not the best horror movie of all time, but I don't understand why it has such a bad reputation.
Weird, I always find people who LOVE this movie. To me, until something "better" comes along, it'll always be my #1 worst movie. Really hate it.
I liked The Fifth Element, mostly because it brought to the screen everything I liked about old Métal Hurlant comics.
Likewise, I have a hard time finding people who hate this movie.
I'm quite fond of Attack of the Clones, especially when the er... clones er... you know, finally attack. Though it doesn't compare to THX1138, which is one of my favorite movies, and which most people hate, apparently.
I dunno, the only part of the AotC I liked was Dooku fighting Anakin/Obi then Yoda.
I thought Daredevil was pretty cool.
I REALLY like Daredevil myself and always rank it pretty high when comparing other Marvel movies. This one seems to be polarized: I seem to find people who either really love it or really hate it.
The only movie I can think of that seems to be universally hated that *I* love..."It's Pat." That movie was hilarious to me.

I am also quite fond of Revenge of The Sith. That movie was the best out of the previous SW pre-quals, Anakin became quite an interesting character one he went to the Darkside.
I hear a lot of people trash Fight Club. It's one of my all time favorites.
Who hated Fight Club? I have heard nothing but positive things about the movie.

Me. :) I'd watch it again, its not on any personal top 10 worst movies or nothing, but I really hated the "twist." Thought there was something romantic about Norton and Carter's characters hand in hand watching buildings blow up at the end.

I really don't think that movies which are generally held to quite popular and successful really fit into this subject.

Actually, I think they do, because it often seems that the more popular and successful some movies are, the more vocal and numerous their critics become. It's hard to find -anyone- saying positive things about the Star Wars Prequels or the Matrix Sequels online. Likewise X-Men 3 or "Fantastic Four".
My own list:
The Star Wars Prequels: I don't think they were as good as the originals (Well, Episode III may be better than Return of the Jedi, but anyway), but I still enjoyed the hell out of them.
Superman Returns: A lot of people (especially here) seem to bash this movie. I loved it, and no, I -wasn't- a die-hard fan of the first Reeve/Donner film, either.
Judge Dredd: I can't explain it. It's bad...but it's gloriously bad. I enjoyed it when I saw it the first time, and I've enjoyed it every time I saw it since then.
Batman Forever: I hated "Batman and Robin"....but generally I liked its' immediate predecessor. Hammy Carrey/Jones pair and all.
Punisher (Recent Tom Jane version): There were things I -didn't- like (Travolta mostly), but Thomas Jane's Punisher portrayal was awesome, and the last 30 or so minutes of the movie really captured the right "Feel" of Frank Castle.

You talking fan-internet community, and I'm talking general public fans/haters. There is a huge difference between the two, basicly we(internet community) pretty much hate everything and can never agree (esp. for geek movies), and the general public pretty much are in agreement for their love of these movies.

Yeah, I remember reading some of those when it came out. Then a lot of them, like the Entertainment Weekly movie critic, reversed themselves and suddenly "loved" it once the bandwagon for it started. I seem to remember Roger Ebert pulling a similar flip-flop with Unforgiven in the early 90s. What a bunch of lemmings; if you hate a movie, go ahead and hate it; why should other people's opinions of it affect your own?

Hudson Hawk
I think at the time of its release, it was almost universally panned. And I get it. It's not high-brow, it's a bit too far-fetched (stuff just seems to happen with no rhyme or reason), Bruce Willis sings, and Sandra Bernhart (sp?) is in it. I don't think the acting is all that great. But I love the movie. While I'm not a fan of his singing, I love it when Danny and Bruce are tooling around the museum and singing "Swining on a Star." I love the fact that David Carusso doesn't talk. I like that the Pope was watching Mr. Ed. It's stupid, it's frantic, and it keeps me in my seat.

The Matrix Sequels. No, they weren't as good as the first. But they were still pretty good.
Attack of the Clones - the acting sucked but it sucked in all three prequels and its not the acting we are really watching it for. I can forgive some horrible Hayden Christensen / Natalie Portman scenes since the rest of the movie is pretty entertraning.
Daredevil - Probably my 5th favorite of the Marvel comic movies behind only the two Spiderman films and the first two X-men films. Its no where as good as those four but its better than the rest.
Batman Forever - Jim Carrey was perfect as The Riddler.
X-Files: Fight the Future - yeah, it was dumbed down for newbies but it was still super cool seeing Mulder and Scully on the big screen.

Underworld Films: I know that when the first movie came out it was during the time when the Blade films was at the height of it's populatiry. Some of the critics considered it as a poor man's version of Blade.
I personally enjoyed the movie and I did find the idea of the Vampire/Lucan hybrid scenario pretty unique.
X-Men: The Last Stand- I am not a fanboy of Brian Singer nor am one of those comic geeks that will bash a movie just because it doesn't completly follow through with the original source.
I enjoyed the development they made with Storm, in the first film she was completly useless but she has grown as a character in the last film. I even find the movie version of Wolverine pretty cool compared to the comic counterpart.
Last Stand was not a perfect film but I would not rank it as the worst film. Catwoman deserves that credit.
Dead Man's Chest was a pretty good sequal to POTC- Anyone who hated the movie just because it's long must have a pretty short attention span. The twist at the end was unexpected.

Put me down for Hudson Hawk as well. It was a fun movie.
I also liked Matrix: Reloaded better than the first Matrix. Don't really care to see Matrix: Revolutions ever again. But even though the general consensus is the sequels were inferior, seems people still seem to like Reloaded over Revolutions.

"Hulk", which I feel in time will be one of the more fondly remembered of the superhero movies from this particular glut of them, possibly the best sci-fi creature feature since Cronenbergs "The Fly".
But far more controversial, everything I have seen of "House of the Dead" has made me genuinely laugh out loud at is audacity, I admit I have yet to see the whole thing and have only seen clips but it seems like the slow dimwitted son of the first "From Dusk till Dawn" movie.
I need to see the whole thing though, it is certainly from what I have seen, no more dire than most hollywood movies are at the moment, seems like the good non self aware kind of crap, instead of just crap.
Also a whole collection full of trashy movies but those are the most universally panned I think.

Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes. One of the best action sci-films I've ever seen. Different enough that you didn't know where the story was headed. It was also one of the studio's more profitable movies, yet there was no sequel.
Bouncing Boy
10-05-2006, 05:51 PM
The first three movies I thought of all involve Kevin Smith and Ben Afleck. The first one I thought of was Mallrats which seems to be pretty much split on those that liked it and those that hated it. The second one I thought of was Jersey Girl which even the Kevin Smith fans mostly hated. The third was Daredevil which other people have mentioned here.
Others that came to mind:
Van Helsing
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (it's not universally hated but I've found enough people who hated it that I think I'm justified in mentioning it)
All Robert Rodregez movies (Alot of people think he's overrated, I love his movies)

Co-sign. I would have loved to have seen Burton tackle Beneath and Escape, keeping it a tight trilogy. But even if it was successful, he probably wouldn't have done it: after Batman Returns, he's sworn off doing sequels to his own movie.

To make it even more ironic when the old cartoon had Skeletor jobbing to He-Man the live action film actually made him a threat.

I like Grease 2 more than the original.
So do I. In fact, I hate the original and love the sequel.
Oh yeah Josie and the Pussycats...pure T&A love for that one.
I thought the problem was not ENOUGH T&A. They took the Pussycats out of their original, sexy outfits from the cartoon and replaced them with the gaudiest, least flattering costumes possible. Rosario Dawson (the one member that even has any remarkable T or A) looked like a drag queen most of the time. It did have some surprisingly clever jokes and jabs at the music industry though.

What's the criteria again? Cause some of the movies aren't "hated", especially the originals that spawned some sequels.
Apparently there's some bizarre definition of "hated" that I've not been made privy to.

Fatal Deviation: It's an absolutely awful Irish martial arts film. It was never released, but I got my hands on a copy with the phone number of the star on the back. God it was terrible. The villain was a former Irish popstar called Mikey Graham and the action was set in the small town of Trim co. Meath.
My flatmates refuse to let me watch it when they're in the house, but I can't help myself. The fightscenes have me rolling around the floor half the time. If you ever can see this piece of Ed Woodian mastery, do yourself a favour and catch it. Or don't. Depending on your tolerance threshold.

Personally, I'd consider any movie where the majority of comments you'll find on them is "God that sucked/was stupid/etc..". Regardless of how much money they made. Hence, Star Wars Prequels, Matrix Sequels, and various Superhero Films are fair game.
Yeah, so it's a cross-section of internet/geek society that's making the judgement. It's moot anyway, because for the criteria some people here seem to think should apply (that it was a financial "bomb" in addition to being panned), we wouldn't even know -which- movies we "like" that other people "hate"...because most of us wouldn't have seen them in the first place!

Even going by what the net thinks vs what the real world thinks or even if it really made money or not, I'm still a bit lost. Like Ghost Dog? I kept hearing that's the movie that no one's watching (i.e. sleeper hit), I don't remember seeing any message boards saying "This sucks!" I found quite a few saying it was clever and better than it appears. Not saying they didn't exist obviously, but I guess we're all just working with a different mean here.
I guess it all boils down to we're all going to have a different idea of what is hated and what isn't based on a variety of things one person may have seen or heard (message boards) and others may not have (those same message boards), or different experiences (all the people one person knows saying they like the movie vs all the people another person knows saying they hate a movie). Yeah, I know, common sense, its just I was going "That movie was hated?" to a few of the choices is all.
But yeah, I'd bet money "It's Pat" was universally hated. Still loved it, though. ;)

Who hates The Fifth Element? I've never heard that be generally hated.
The Matrix sequels are generally hated. The Fifth Element didn't get that kind of hate.
Also, who hates Lost in Translation? Not the general public. Didn't it win awards? Wasn't it like THE movie when it came out?
Dead Man's Chest was a pretty good sequal to POTC- Anyone who hated the movie just because it's long must have a pretty short attention span.
Or maybe they just don't like overly long movies that don't really go anywhere they couldn't have in an hour and a half. ;)
The twist at the end was unexpected.
Really? I totally saw that coming. Just like the Sixth Sense.

I loved all the Matrix movies. I really don't get why people hated the last two. I guess they're the same people who are giving up on Lost right now.
I think some people just latch onto a movie and then get angry when the creators go off and tell a story they want to tell instead of.. I don't know.. whatever random expectations the audience have for where the story was going.

That's probably true. Usually though, people who don't like the Matrix sequels (I'm one of them) argue that:
- Not enough time is spent in the Matrix itself, which was such an integral part of the appeal of the first movie.
- The themes don't seem to be integrated into the plot, but almost tacked on, as if the story acts were interrupted with Power Point presentations.
- Some action scenes don't seem to serve any dramatic purpose.
- Minor (and sometimes very minor) characters sometimes steal the show.
In other words, most people who don't like the Matrix sequels think their script looks like a first draft, and they're disappointed, because most of them also think that "The Matrix" had a very solid script.
I saw a lot of "hated" movies I liked listed in this thread, but no one has mentioned this yet:
I own Waterworld on DVD.

Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones- I think that not only does this movie improve upon futher viewings, but it got better to me when watching it as a lead in to Ep. III. The Obi Wan/Anakin vs. Count Dooku and Dooku vs. Yoda fights were totally badass, and so was Obi Wan vs. Jango Fett.
Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith- I feel like I shouldn't even have to defend this one. I liked this movie a lot. The acting in this one was the strongest by far of the prequels.
Daredevil- IMHO, the only character they got wrong was Elektra(casting), and I've never really cared for her as a character anyway. I think the awesomeness that was Bullseye and Kingpin made up for what Jennifer Garner lacked. Ben Affleck was just fine despite the usual crap he gets. Far from perfect but certainly enjoyable and very rewatchable on DVD.
Unbreakable- You know, I've actually heard and read BAD reviews of this movie? What those people see that I didn't I'll never know. That movie was friggin awesome.
Memoirs of an Invisible Man- A pretty universally panned flick starring Chevy Chase, Darryl Hannah, and Sam Neill. Also with an appearance of my favorite character actor, Stephen Toblowsky(You may know him as Sammy Jenkis in Memento, or Ned Ryerson in Groundhog Day). Kinda silly, but for some reason it works for me.

My list:
Lady In the Water: IMO, M. Night's best movie yet. From start to finish, excellent movie! The two main stars were very cool in this and I liked M. Nights part in the movie too. I like the twist also!
Unbreakable: Such a cool movie! One of Bruce's best, if not his best!
The Villiage: Another really good M. Night movie!
Daredevil: Like this movie a lot. Ben Affleck, imo, was perfect as Matt Murdock/Daredevil (especially as Murdock though). I also liked Jennifer Garner as Elektra (though her spinoff movie was just OK). Lots of action in this one. Cool movie.
Hulk: I think cgi Hulk is the most faithful Hulk we've gotten on TV or movies. He just looks so cool. I also love how this movie is directed. Its like WATCHING a comic book put on film. Ang Lee did a great job with it. I also think Eric Bana was a good Bruce Banner (and Jennifer Conelly was good as Betty). I just don't know why people don't like this one..
Superman Returns: Have no idea why people didn't love this. Wow. Bryan Singer just did an awesome job with this movie and the lead actor (whos name escapes me at the moment, lol) was perfect as Clark Kent/Superman. This is the ULTIMATE Superman movie. Sure Chris Reeve's verison is still classic, but Superman Returns, dare I say it, is even better. From start to finish, very cool movie!
X-men 3: I think mostly people didn't like it cause it wasn't directed by Bryan Singer (that may be why some people didn't like Superman, cause they would rather have seen Bryan do X-3. I'm talking about the fans here, not the general public). lol. I thought X-3 was very cool. Lots of action, plenty of plot twists (many shocking), and a good storyline. Definitly my favorite of the X-men movies!
And there's more, but those are the only ones I can think of at the moment! lol.

Because that's not a twist, that's a character being killed in a movie and it happens all the time, but that was the only thing I could think of so could you fill me in?

And on another note, The Lady in The Water was horrid.
But you know what movie wasn't?(even though it gets a lot of crap)
Batman Forever.
Ok, now I'm not going to sit here and say that this movie was great or anything, but a lot of the time this movie just gets lumped in with Batman and Robin as being terrible and I just have to call shenanigans on that.
Batman Forever might be a bit silly, but it's watchable. Batman and Robin isn't even watchable on a camp level. It actually makes me more irritable if it's on my television, it's just God awful. Now I suppose you could I guess make a case that Batman Forever may have started some trends that were crucial to making Batman and Robin as bad as it was, but I feel if you're judging the film on it's own, it's not the worst thing ever put to film.
If nothing's on TV on a lazy Sunday and I have nothing better to do, you bet I'd watch Batman Forever and eat a Burrito in my boxer shorts.

Hudson Hawk is a hilarious film. I don't know why critics felt they had to piss all over it. If it came out today, post-Farelly Brothers, I think it'd be much better received. Even Willis made a sort of apology for the script on Letterman, which ticked me off.
These two films aren't exactly hated, more like ignored, but I've always loved The Replacements and Necessary Roughness.
