Hellboy Forum Holiday Art Exchange 2006

Hello everyone! Are you ready for the fourth annual art exchange? Most of you are familiar with the exchange, some of you may have not participated in the past, and I'm sure some of you are even wondering who I am since I don't get to visit the board as much as I have in the past.

So what exactly is the exchange?

The exchange is an opportunity for forum members to give and/or receive original Hellboy fan art. That's right, original Hellboy fan art. Each person creates a piece of Hellboy-themed art (it can be anything) and will send it to a randomly chosen person who is participating in the exchange. This is an opportunity to be super creative.

If you are suddenly sad because you swear up and down that you just cannot possibly create anything you would want to send to someone or you are just not physically able, that is where the awesomeness of this little community really shines. Several people may create multiple pieces of art to send to those individuals who aren't able to send pieces of their own but would still like to participate in the exchange by receiving a piece of fan art. So don't hesitate to participate. 'Tis a time of giving and friendship!

It is important to remember that you will be sending your art directly to the randomly selected individual whose name you receive. This will require you to pay the postage. Remember that the Hellboy Forum is an international community and therefore may require you to send a package to another country.

Who is eligible to participate?

Registered members of Comic Book Resources Forums as of 30 September 2006 and participants in the Hellboy Forum.

What are the guidelines and how do I sign up?

Each person wanting to participate in the exchange will FIRST need to create a Hellboy/Mignola related piece of art (unless you are not creating a piece of art and wanting to receive only). After your art piece is finished (no "in progress" pieces please), please e-mail the following information to me at "petriacce at hotmail dot com":

a scan/picture of your art piece (please keep it to a width of 600 pixels or less) if you are creating multiple pieces to send to those who are only receiving, please send me a scan/picture for each piece.
your real first and last names / forum name
whether you are giving a piece/pieces of art or want to receive only
e-mail address
mailing address (please include any special mailing instructions if you were to receive a package from outside of your country (i.e. mark as gift, special address format, etc.))
I will send you an e-mail response acknowledging the receipt of your information and I will add your name to the participant list below.

What is the timeline?

02 Oct 2006 - Start working on your piece(s) of art now.
31 Oct 2006 - Final date for submitting a scan/picture of artwork (Midnight PT)
06 Nov 2006 - Final date for me sending you the name and mailing information of the person to whom you are sending your art.
15 Nov 2006 - Final date for mailing your art piece to its intended recipient.
15 Nov 2006 - From this date forward please post on this Art Exchange Thread when you receive your art.

The personal information you supply will not be posted on the forum or shared with anyone other than myself and the person who is randomly selected to send you art. If you are under 18 years of age, please ask your parents if it is okay to participate before signing up. Please don't ask me for other participant's personal information even if your intentions are good. Thanks.

Please note that the Hellboy Forum is an international community and some of you will be sending your art package to another country. Please take that into consideration when estimating the financial impact of participating in the exchange.

Please post any questions you may have on this thread. Note that I will probably have to make changes to the information in this post as we go along for clarification reasons. The bottom of the post will indicate the date of the latest edit. Please review the post occasionally to be aware of any changes.

OKAY, THAT IS THE FINAL LIST FOR THIS YEAR'S HOLIDAY ART EXCHANGE. I'LL BE GETTING THE EXCHANGE NAMES AND MAILING INFORMATION OUT TO EVERYONE BY THE 6TH AT THE LATEST. I'LL ALSO GET THE WEBSITE UP SOON.

Visit this year's web site Here (http://home.earthlink.net/~petriacce/exchange2006).

Please note that this art exchange is in no way the responsibility of Mike Mignola, Comic Book Resources, www.hellboy.com, Dark Horse Comics, Inc., or jnapper; it's just a fan thing. Please be kind and only post questions and other ramblings pertaining to the exchange on this thread. Thanks.

I'm gonna try to be in this this time. I missed the last holiday exchange, I think. I've got a better grasp of how college it this time, so it might work out for me.

Thanks for putting this thing on again, Pets. Good stuff.

I have a question. How does it work when someone with little or no or negative artistic talent wants to just recieve a piece of art. How does the artist giving a gift get a piece of art also?

Does that make sense?

Does that make sense?Yes, the question does make sense. Trust me, the math all works out. No matter how many people sign up there is enough art for everyone.

People who sign up just to receive will get art on a first come first serve basis depending on how much additional art is created; however, I have to mention that every year of the exchange so far there have been enough additional art pieces created/donated to cover everyone. That is just one of the reasons why our forum is so awesome.

Nuts. I suspect that I am going to have to sit this one out this year. I have got WAY too much stuff I have to get done in the next few weeks.

I can't wait to see other people's art though! Once again you're a good man, Charlie Br--er Patrick for organizing this! :)

The art doesn't have to be a painting or drawing does it? Can it be a sculpture or custom figure or something along those lines?

I think Celtic Fiddler did a quilt at some point didn't she? Was that for the art exchange?

Mike Cross
10-04-2006, 09:46 AM
It can be anything as long as it mostly fits the HB theme. We've had a quilt, we've had glass sculpture, we've had statues, we've had toys if i recall, plus traditional pencil/pen/ink/painted art. Go wild.

Thanks Mike. I'm just bummed that I had a good idea that was new and exciting to make as well as to share and I con't do it in time (perhaps if I start now I could be done by next exchange)

Sounds fun. Hey, can we have a hallow's eve costume contest as well...please please please!

10-08-2006, 01:10 PM
I think Celtic Fiddler did a quilt at some point didn't she? Was that for the art exchange?

I did and it was! Thank you for remembering! :)

I want to do something, but here it is already October 8 and I don't hve the time to start something - but I will try.

I've been away awhile because of work being busy and my computer dying on me. I promise, all I did was try to hotsynch my PalmPilot! The Blue Screen of Death appeared and I knew I was toast. Dear Husband just finally got the last of the software reinstalled. I lost all my Internet Favorites, such as the Haggis tossing that I had gotten from this board. (Don't ask, I don't remember how.... Helen?)

My computer just got fixed. And I have been working overtime at my job, doing extra volunteer work, yadda yadda I know, you've heard the story so many times before....

As far as I can see, the deadline to participate is to get a piece of art made and a scan of it to Patrick by October 31.

Patrick: you might want to correct the "2005" dates in the first post to "2006" though. :)

Finished 2. They were inspired by Petersen saying he liked my original stuff best. I did 2 pieces of Hellboy beset by creatures I created. I won't post them until the exchange is over. There is a blank gravestone in one pic that I will put my recipients name on when I find out.

Edit: I thought there was a mention of not posting pics before the deadline but I couldn't find it. What's the protocol, Patrick?

BTW... got busy in photoshop and came up with two emoticons, if the emoticons qualify as "ART" I'll send one in as it is actually totally my own work. Of course it would have to be sent via email, but if no one has a prob with it then let me know.

Do the emoticons count? That i'm not sure as then we could all just send emailed copies of things to each other and not get to share in the actual joy of receiving a gift, which is the larger picture of the art exchange. I'm sure they are great and they took you a lot of time and effort, but I'm not for thinking that totally classifies, though i could be totally out in left field.

Thanks,
Le RochelleYeah, I probably should have established some guidelines on the art for the exchange. Original digital works of art are acceptable is they are printed out and mailed. Emoticons aren't really something included in the intent of the exchange.

Did you get my email? I haven't seen anything back.Hey Beau, and the others that sent messages, I have updated the list tonight for those that are receive only or submitted art. I'm curious (in the past this never seemed to be a problem) but should i write in screen names on the package so the recipient knows who its from?

Maija
11-08-2006, 07:56 PM
Why not include a card?

Putting a username on the outside of the package could create confusion for the mail sorter or suspicion if it's going through customs. Not that the contents would be worthy of that suspicion, but it could delay it, times being as they are.

Glad you like it, lerochelle!

The background and the "Shriek" were watercolors and HB was colored with Prismacolor markers. Glad you liked the cards too! They are all original creations!

Glad it arrived safely.
I wanted to do something with the animated Hb and thought some kind of mirror concept with the "Mignola" Hb might be cool.
I owe a lot of the idea to my wife. She's the one that dug up the Girl Before Mirror painting by Picasso that I based my idea on.

Thus, Boy Before Mirror was born.

Since I forgot to enclose a card in them, look for Lauzon on the outside and you will know its from me !!

Beau,
I felt bad about not making a new contribution so I'm glad you like it.
Happy Holidays!!

(btw, did you ever do more with your odd rouge's gallery that included 'the twins', 'the quail', etc....? I found the images on my hard drive the other night. I saved it because I thought they character ideas, designs, and layout of the image was too clever.)

Not that anyone really cares, but I thought I should show the inspiration for my exchange piece. My piece is based on a Santa ad for CocaCola by Sundblom.

Well..after a particularly suckass week at work (which, sadly, is not yet finished) I managed to make shift some packaging and get my piece into the mail. Should arrive by Wednesday latest.

But, silver lining and all that, I came home to find an envelope in my mailbox from lerochelle. What a great piece! It captures the emotion of that shot in the movie wonderfully. Thanks so much, le rochelle!

Just a canvas photo paper. Stick it in the printer. It prints.

Glad you like it Peterson!

Great news Kirk! Used the movie on pause for the style. Got something new like it up on my deviant page.
Hope your week gets better!

Yes I got them and they are now framed and hanging on my wall. These are my first two pieces of art I have ever owned. I do plan on buying some but your art is my first. So thank you very much. As far as the photos you sent me the one saying BPRD wants you. Now I am fairly new to Hellboy and have read the 1st three trades so I dont want to be wrong but its Kate right? As well as the other one. Well anyway thanks again and if you want ill send you a list of comics I was going to send you so you can pick which ones you really want or may have. Thanks again Myron.

So on Saturday, my wife throws me a surprise 30th birthday party. I almost keel over I'm so happy. I am opening my gifts from friends and family and there is a padded envelope on the table with a name on it that is unfamiliar.

I rip it open (carefully) and pull out two gorgeous illustrations! The HB St. Nick and the Nymph are ASTOUNDING! Thanks so much, and I love them!

This exchange was a great idea, and I'm so happy I participated!

Thanks again!

Ho, ho, ho, what do you know?

Received my gift exchange today, and guess whom it was from...
None other than 'crossstreetartist', my exchange recepient. What are the odds, eh?

Thanks, 'crossstreetartist', it reflects the season real well.

Was able to size the image to its limited size. Does not do the original justice though.

It's pretty bad, the tear is at least 3 inches wide right through the middle. I could tell something was wrong right when they delivered it because of the outside packaging looking already torn through.

But regardless of the lazy UPS guys, the picture is fantastic and I wanted to thank ya one more time.

There is a story behind the pic...

I remember seeing a picture of when they found Abe in St Trinian's, and there being another tank next to him, broken and empty. So I am writing a story about what was in the other tank.

Here's the summary...

Abe is sent to the medditerannian to look into sailor's reports of snakes writhing in the water all the way to mermaids. Thier fishing nets have been cut open repeatedly, and the catch lost.

Abe dives down and after a shark chases him below the light line, he finds himself in total darkness. Sensing a presence behind him, he turns to see this...

I don't know if I'd call making some art in the anticipation of exchanging it with someone else nerditity, sounds more like being pumped about trading art. ;)

I'm gonna try to get in on it this year, I don't think I was part of it last year (was I? I can't remember). It's always a good time, for sure.
