It is not technically horror but BATTLE ROYALE japanese is a mindlbower. I hooked someone on this who had never watched a subtitled movie and they are like.. "you &%*((& , I cant stop watching"
its a horror sci fi, action, dystopian, teen, friendship (isnt it sad that the topic of friendship doesent seem to be as common in american films?)romance, ghost story that will make you cry.
ONE MISSED CALL & PT 2 are both great and dubbed into english.
aright, Foreign in the sense that its from Australia but FEED
yuck it slike a horse race between DISTURBING, DISGUSTING, DREADFULL & OOOOO WORDS JUST CANT DESCRIBE THIS.
ok. this is a rough pick, if you havent seen it... its important to rent this, download etc. without looking at the cover, or reading any reviews. . AUDITION

The Vanishing - the original, not the remake with Kiefer.
Carnival of Souls, a low budget b&w flick froimt the 60's is one that sticks in my mind. And Kubrick's The Shining. Japan and Korea seem to be putting out a lot of horror stuff the last several years. Audition is very disturbing. The Japanese version of The Ring was quite effective as well, I thought.

I didn't like it that much, myself. The ending was predictable, and you had to suspend all of your disbelief for it to make sense.
I'm going to recommend "Ju-On," the Japanese version of "The Grudge," and also "One Missed Call," by Takashi Miike. "Audition" was incredibly twisted, too, but I thought it was more of a thriller than a horror, lacking that supernatural aspect.
Also, for an all-around fun movie, "Ichi the Killer" is great. And Royal mentioned another movie a while back that I decided to check out, "Marebito." It's like Lovecraft, it's so weird.

I say, whatever you do, try to avoid the movie. The book is thirty score better.

But it is an excellent low budget horror film.

I liked the Japanese version of The Ring, although it wasn't that scary. Ju-On was good, too, and there's another Japanese one I'm trying to remember that was seriously gory... Ah, it was Another Heaven (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0244975/). Entertaining, if a bit over the top. Demonic possession, murder, what's not to love.

I agree with Carnival of souls, I see where M Knight Shamylan got his Sixth Sense Idea from.
Dark Tales of Japan is a good one also, a bit cheesy on the first 2 shorts, the third and fourth one rock

'High Tension' story not that great but it has a couple of good shock moments.
'Ringu' (original Japanese 'Ring')
'The Grudge' (original Japanese 'The Grudge' heh)
'Wolf Creek'
Also, I haven't seen it myself, but I've heard 'Audition' is freaky.

Freddie Got Fingered - it was a horror that anyone actually made that film.
Aside from that - none. But then, I think horror films suck.

If you mean non-American films there's Creep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creep_%28film%29), a wonderful addition to Underground horror films.
Peeping Tom (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peeping_Tom_%28film%29), a film of utter genius that helped influence Scorsese.
Lastly, The Last Horror Film (http://www.britishhorrorfilms.co.uk/lasthorrormovie.shtml) is worth more than a look.

Curious viewers will find "Toby Dammit" in the anthology film SPIRITS OF THE DEAD. "Toby Dammit" is the best of the three stories (all based on Poe) and is directed by Frederico Fellini.

The Japanese version of The Ring was quite effective as well, I thought.
Yes it was, before they turned it into a series and it just got ridiculous. Between the four movies and the TV series, it stopped making any sense whatsoever, especially in Rasen where they made it into a disease.

I remember that scared the daylights out of me when I saw it on tv as a kid. Seeing Brigitte Bardot naked in the other story made up for it though.

It has a TV interview in it, but Toby is an actor being interviewed, not the interviewer himself. That must be the one; I've always wanted to watch this again, never having seen it since then. I think I checked later and found that it was based on "Never Bet the Devil Your Head" - very loosely, it must have been, because from what I can recall it didn't follow the story very closely. The other two did, though, IIRC - Metzengerstein (the one with BB) and William Wilson. You're right though - neither of those were anywhere near as effective as the Fellini. Metzengerstein I remember being not bad - pretty atmospheric, at least. But William Wilson wasn't memorable at all, in spite of being based on one of Poe's most interesting stories (too bad he hit the reader over the head with the allegory at the end, though). I think it could make a good premise for a movie if it were done with some vision, just taking the basic idea and letting the imagination run free with it - and avoiding Poe's mistake (IMO) in making the symbolism too explicit.

Audition, Takashi Miike's masterpeice of genre subversion, you will never want to sleep with a shy japanese girl again.
Suspiria, masterpiece, pure and simple, anything from Argento around this period is gold.
Demons 1 and 2, throw quality out the window and enjoy the hilarious dubbing "we need more energy people"
The Paul Naschy series of classic monster movies, fun and campy classics starring the great Paul Naschy almost remakes of the classic Universal Monster movies.
Bio-Zombie, shaun of the dead but set in a japanese mall, with one of the best zombie gore gags going.
and just for fun as mentioned before.
Necromantik and Salo.

It was Fonda.
It was Fonda.shit, was it really? I haven't seen it since the early 70's, but I always remembered it as Bardot for some reason.
A quick look at imdb reveals that Bardot was in the Wm Wilson story, not Metzengerstein. I speculate that either it was Fonda who appeared nude and I remembered it as Bardot because in later years I always thought she was the more attractive of the two; or it was Bardot, but in the Wilson segment, and I mentally transferred it to Metzengerstein just because I liked it better than the Wilson. Or I just got mixed up for no particular reason.
Now I really want to see this again.

Bardot is in the second story wearing a wig I believe. Fonda stars in the first and Vadim cast her brother for some suggestion of incest due to our awareness of the actors' relationship.
Honestly though Toby Dammit is the highlight. I read a Kim Newman novel (I know, I know, dont say anything) called Anno Dracula set in Rome (?) where he heavily referenced Dammit.
Thanks to this thread I have tracked down the dvd and purchased the dvd - so cheers for that :D
