Hey, no thread to celebrate Stan Lee's 65th anniversary with Marvel?!

The first issue, Stan Lee Meets Spider-Man , just got released. I read it and it was really cute. Stan "the Man" and his humor are all over this book. And I thought Olivier Copiel's art was quite pretty.

(But hey! Doesn't Stan Lee live in California??)

Joss Whedon's back-up tale was clever. I especially liked the "Normal Four" and "Amazing Reality".

My only qualm with this was at $4.28, I expected more than just 10 pages of Stan Lee story. Most of this book is taken up with a reprint of Amazing Spider-Man #87. But I still enjoyed the new tales, and look forward to further installments! Anyone else get this??

It really has only 10 pages of the Stan Lee story? What kind of crap is that?

10 by Lee, 10 by Whedon, 2 by Hembeck and then the reprint.

That sounds like a pretty fair spread

I enjoyed it. Stan's story was weird, but I enjoyed it. It's basically Stan taking the piss, and that's funny, and it earns my respect, too.

Whedon's story had me in stitches; I loved the conceit, I loved what he did with it, and I loved the ending. ("So, Pornworld?")

Hembeck is always good, and Amazing 87's an issue I've never seen before in color, so it was all good.

The first story reminded me to that episode of Spiderman TAS where Madame Web sends him through Universes and he finnaly mets the guy who draws him.

"Don't worry Mosquito Man. Its a big city. Maybe there is room for the two of us." ... Yeah sure.

Whedons story was funny as well.
Lucky for them, meeting yourself from another dimensions is undangerous meeting your self from another timeline is paradox so its dangerous.

O-Pressed People? Normal Four? Amazing Reality? Dr. Banner in bad Mood?

God, its good to live in a world where writers have fanatasy.

I wonder why there was no Wolverine joke (well its better if he is not everywhere)

The end is almost Cable and Deadpool like:
SR:"So, Pornworld?"
SL:"Lets Ride."

About the last story is it just me or did, Spidey used that trick multipil times, bringing someone to wear his costume while he walks around as Peter?

Well i guess these times are over now.

It was okay storywise. "Bees on a Zeppelin". Heh.

Artwise it was gorgeous. Coipel had this Rude-vibe (classic but not outdated) and Gaydos was as good as always.

Hembekc's story was the best. I'd like to see more of him.

My shop got shorted so I didn't get my copies, very bummed. Hope they show up and I don't end up on the 'wish I'd gotten it' list :(

That was the only thing, I wanted to see more Lee/Coipel but the book itself is well worth it IMO.

Can't wait to get the other ones.

That was kind of my reaction. I figure I'll wait until they collect them all in a trade and maybe then I'll get my money's worth.

Stan Lee Meets Doctor Strange:

Wow, Alan Davis sure draws some pretty pictures. Great cover and interior art. Stan "the Man" had a funny tale in this one; where Dr. Strange needs to make money off his image. The teaming of Lee/Davis makes this one special.

Brian Michael Bendis had an amusing story starring the Impossible Man. Who returns to find our modern Marvel Universe not to his liking. This one is FILLED with in-jokes, as Impy storms around the Marvel offices. (My favorite was Joe Quesada's drawing board covered in cobwebs!)

I've always loved Chris Ciarrusso's strips, so his Stan Lee tribute was fun. And then came the reprint of an old Dr. Strange story: "While the World Spins Mad!" By Stan and Barry Windsor-Smith, this story is gorgeous Bronze Age mystical fun. A forgotten gem, that reminds me that much of Doc Strange's stories are hidden treasures that many comics fans need to explore.

Overall, I enjoyed this one more than the Spider-Man issue. Alan Davis' art alone made it worth the price. Did anyone else pick it up?

The comicbook with the Stan Lee story that's included with the X-Men: The Last Stand Collector's Edition DVD also fits in this series, same sort of story..

I liked both of them so far quite a lot. I mean, I was expecting to love the 'Spider-Man' one, but I didn't have high hopes for the 'Dr. Strange' issue, so I was very pleasantly surprised.

I thought Bendis' back-up in the Strange issue was brilliant. I'm sure some 'fans' will attack him for using the Stan Lee comic to essentially pay tribute to himself, but what was Stan Lee without self-promotion? The way he gave today's Bullpen the same feeling as days of old, and the way he tied it all back to Lee, was really great, IMO.

And Lee's work on the Strange story was even better than the Spidey issue, for mine. Here's hoping the next issue is just as entertaining!

I enjoyed the Spidey issue a lot more than the Strange one. Bendis' story was entertaining, but the ending was kind of weak.

People are bashing Bendis for his Dr. Strange back-up, which is hysterical to me.

Well . . . it was a little self-serving. Hilarious, but self-serving.

I don't know, if anything it shows that Bendis and the Marvel guys still have a sense of humor and aren't afraid to poke fun at themselves and their stories. Considering how often people criticize them for being humorless, cynical, or arrogant it's a little refreshing to see that they can be self-deprecating. And as for the ending, as previously mentioned Stan was exactly the type of person who'd dismiss criticisms with "change is good"-type answers in his Bullpens, so I don't mind it because while convenient its in character for Stan to say those things. (Besides, did anyone really expect a "shame on you and all the things you've done to my company"-type ending?)

Man I could not be less interested in this. Think of all the poor trees that died so this tripe could be printed. :(

Some people enjoyed it. Just because you personally don't like it, doesn't mean it's crap.

The Impossible man story wasn't too horrible, but I really didn't get a Stan Lee feeling from the way that he was being written. The dialog just lacked something.

my only hope is that he challenges his critics to a boxing match like Uwe Boll did.

my only hope is that he challenges his critics to a boxing match like Uwe Boll did.You realize Uwe Boll beat the shit out of his critics, right? He kind of forgot to mention that he's an experienced boxer.

I have a feeling you wouldn't be rooting for Bendis, so maybe not the best comparison.

actually it was the perfect comparison. it was your two cents that didn't really add up. i said, "my only hope is that he challenges his critics to a boxing match like Uwe Boll did." you seem to have ridiculously interpreted it as "my only hope is that Bendis beats up his critics in a boxing match like Uwe Boll did." and no i wouldn't be rooting for Bendis. and Boll didn't seem all that experienced. seemed more like they paid the other guy to not fight.

The thing with Boll was that he told the people ahead of time it was just be a publicity stunt and not a real match. he also promised them training.

They didn't get any training and and he actively tried to hurt them as much as he could.

Boll also turned down a fight from somebody that he actually knew was able to fight. Basically, it was an excuse for him to kick the crap out of his critics.

George Bush governs his country like Hitler did.

Come on, man. The context and connotations matter.

I didn't really like Stan's story too much. Dr. Strange and Wong were so out of character. Was it supposed to be funny?
