Apparently you kicked ass in 2001. And you look better with sidebeard along with the goatee.

And the blue over black with the canvas texture showing through makes it look like the breathable fabric used for these kinds of superhero suits. Very cool.

Gary, the shotglass thing was just a morning-after thing today while I was still hung over, but I think it came together nicely.

Did you ever consider doing a serious Airbrush of a ride/car?
This is a much older version of my pic... But did you think of trying something like this or going through Photoshop/Airbrush to get the same structure/look?
Just wondering?

Wow. Wow. Wow.Thanks. I didn't like it much at first, but it's growing on me.

The shotglass one... is that a photo?
I love it.Yup, that's a photo. I was cleaning up after a booze-up and the glass was sitting almost exactly in that position on the bar. A few slight adjustments, and I had the photo.

Howy,

Did you ever consider doing a serious Airbrush of a ride/car?
This is a much older version of my pic... But did you think of trying something like this or going through Photoshop/Airbrush to get the same structure/look?I think that look could definitely be replicated in Photoshop, and definitely in Painter. I don't do a lot of my actual painting in Photoshop, though. And I'm next to useless with an airbrush in the real world; I've just never been able to get the hang of using one.

Big props to the people who can, though. It definitely takes some talent.

Man, I know you're fairly modest, Howy, but your stuff is extremely versatile. Just drips creativity (literally, in some cases).

My brother, who's mostly a penciller (though a fairly strong one), and largely concentrates on Anime/Disneyesque linework really needs to take a page from your book. It's great to be a strong penciller and I regularly compliment him on it, but color, and as you've shown here time and again even texture, can be so important.

And I'm using your Gecko mosaic as a desktop. It about burns my retinas to stare full on at it, but it's an amazing piece. Everyone who sees it has a different favorite single Gecko, but together they just explode off the screen.

And I never even thought of a gecko desktop, but it does make a lotta sense. Maybe I need to take another look at that one sometime soon.

Oh, and speakin' of texture, it's pretty much impossible to get a full shot of the guitar painting at night, so I thought I'd post some texture close-ups instead:

First there's several overlapping layers of canvas, then there's a whole lot of molding paste and self-levelling gel, and then several layers of paint on top of that - a lot of it slopped on with a palette knife.

Holy shit.

I think one of my biggest limitations as an artist is that I don't push myself.I'm kinda obsessed with that, actually. For the last 4 years or so, I feel like I've learned more each year than in the previous few. This year's been huge for me so far, and it's only March.

I'm curious: are you experimenting serendipitously, trying out new techniques and tools that you hear or read about and want to try, look at something new and think "I wonder how I could do that", think of a piece you want to create and select the best technique that will do it justice, or a mix of all options?

Your skill shows that you're not simply buying a jar of molding paste and fiddling with it... you really know what you're doing and how to use the different tools in your arsenal. (And we happy viewers get to benefit from it)!

(And we happy viewers get to benefit from it)!Trust me, there's been no plan to this beyond deciding that I wanted to take texture further this year than I ever have before.

But I post regularly on the Acrylics board over at WetCanvas, and I'm learning a lot from the good people over there. And at this point I can look at most acrylic paintings and have a fairly good idea of how they were done (I think).

(I should also mention that a few paint manufacturers are cranking out new texture media all the time these days, so every trip to the art store sees me comin' home with new toys to play with.)

howyadoin
05-20-2008, 05:18 PM
Is that built up using gesso? Is it all oil based?I work almost entirely in acrylics, actually. In this particular case, there are some bits of illustration board attached to the wood panel with self-levelling gel, and then the area around the eye is built up with molding paste. And the bit to the lower right is ceramic stucco texture gel.

I'll also be working glass bead gel and regular gloss gel into the mix.

Been workin' on these for awhile now - I've been "growing" the tiles for about a month, give or take. Anyhow, I just diced the paint skins up and started sticking them onto the canvases tonight:

(Incidentally, these canvases are only 3x4 inches. Bought 'em last year on a whim, but I had my doubts that I'd ever use them.)

Not sure yet where I'll go from here. May add a few strings of tar gel - in red, most likely - across the whole thing. We'll see.

I'm freaking loving these. Did you have a clear idea for these pieces before you started or was it something that was taking shape as you progressed? In that particular case I had a pretty good idea. But that's partly because I spent a month making the tiles before I started actually painting the canvases, so I had plenty of time.

Initially, though, I planned to do those streaks of copper-coloured paint in red.

Just put the finishing touches on the bikini chick a couple days ago.

Ok, I am gonna admit it.....I watch shows like "Clean Space" and "While You Were Out".....and sometimes you see some clever design in home living but a room revolved around these pieces would be amazing!....You are the shit Howy!

Thanks, everybody. Appreciate the comments.

And Jonni, at this point it's mostly for fun, but I have sold a few pieces over the past few years - mostly prints, but I'm open to commissions or selling existing pieces.

Don't have a website yet, but it's sloooowwwly coming together.

What I mean is that even though the image never changes I see alot of diffrent subjects everytime I glance at it. 1) An Alien Rising 2) A man in despair with headlights comming fast to take him out. 3) A Supreme Being holding a man's glowing head. You, sir, are a beast. Question about the seat: You are using a mix of colors that make it look really cool. How did you decide to use them (strokes of blue, orange and the like)? Is it merely your style or is there some sort of technique or something?

Is it merely your style or is there some sort of technique or something? It's sort of related to impressionism, which is newest art obsession. A magazine article I read lately mentioned the technique as if it were some minor little detail - putting contrasting colours with similar values together to create what they called "colour vibration". (By similar values, I mean that they're roughly the same in terms of darkness. If you photographed them in black & white, they'd be roughly the same shade of grey.)

Once I started thinking about it, it changed a lot of my ideas about colour. And that's before I ever tried the technique out. I'd be happy to work with this technique for a long time to come, I think.

And thanks, of course.

Have there been days when you've suffered from lack of inspiration? When your muse is gone? If so, how do you deal with that? Some days are better than others. I've gradually learned not to push it, and to let my subconscious do all the heavy lifting.

The other thing is, there are a lot of days where the stuff I'm painting really doesn't require much in the way of creativity - it's more mechanical. Yesterday, for example, all I did was a series of blue washes on that textured background - 5 minutes of painting, leave it for a couple hours to dry, 5 more minutes of painting, and so on.

Then every time you pick the thing up, it's almost automatically stimulating your creativity in some way. That's always a great idea. And y'know, I've actually been toying with it for a while, but I haven't got myself around it. No, I have no reason (read: excuse) for not grabbing a notebook or whatever and start writing (or drawing) whatever it is that comes to mind. I'll just have to start doing it period, otherwise I'll never get my ass to do it.

My plan is, the sculpted white areas to the left of the circle will be finisher to look like banged-up, abused blueish sheetmetal. To the right, I'm gonna use pouring medium to get the area smooth, and then it'll be spraypainted with Montana Gold's Copper Chrome. Do you remember the early issues of Conan the barbarian, where a young Barry Smith grew as an artist by leaps and bound issue after issue? Or when Lennon and McCartney used to outdo each other with each new song?

I get the same impression looking at your recent pieces. The bikinis on the beach, the Indian, the fighter plane and what we've seen of the Dylan piece are just amazing. Not only because they're stunning in and of themselves, but because of the artistic progress they show.

I am floored!!!

Thanks, Ben. All the different things I learned this year are starting to coalesce, I think. It's a strange feeling.

Oh, and here's another view of the new one, to show the impressionist thing I'm trying with the interference and iridescent colours:

So as I mentioned earlier, I had a bunch of paintings photographed by someone who actually knows how to use a camera the other day. Here are the results:
